Marathon Weekend 2026

SAFD: I put my gloves for the first time today! It was 40 when I set out with a cold wind, and I did my warm up mile with gloves, long sleeve top and a down jacket!! Managed to take off the coat after a mile but there’s no way I’d be in short or vest in this weather… very stingy!

What’s the usual temp for MW?
Quick search 30-70. 😬🫣

What do you do with clothes that need to come off during the race? Carry them or dump them?
Most people drop them in the corrals or along the course when they need to come off. If it's something small like arm sleeves or gloves, I'll usually stuff them in a pocket, otherwise it's a discard.

I carried my leggings that I didn’t want to ditch. I tied them around my waist and gave them to my husband in AK. The balaclava was a throwaway but I managed to tie in around my handheld before passing it off. Gloves were throwaways so I tossed them in an AK bathroom. Generally people discard clothes anywhere around the course, but it’s recommended to do so near a water station or medical tent so they’re easier to collect.

Ooh this adds a whole new level of complication in working out what to wear including clothes that I don’t mind discarding or carrying! 😬

SAFD: I run really hot and sweat a ton. If it’s over 50 I’m in a short sleeves/tank and shorts. In the 40’s it’s either short sleeves and tights or long sleeves and shorts. In the 30’s tights and long sleeves. Below freezing, I bust out the thermal tights and a 1/4 zip layer. Gloves are always on below 40.

I have two different kinds of clothes to deal with the weather.

The first are throwaway clothes. These are ones brought for the sole purpose of leaving them behind. I don't worry too much about what they look like or how they fit. For the most part, they get taken off before I cross the start line although I did run the first two miles of the marathon last year with a blanket. I get these at Goodwill or I've found some great deals on clearance at Kohls.

The second are things that I want to keep. My raincoat, hat and arm sleeves fit in this category. If I need to take them off, they get tied around my waist or put in a pocket. At Disney, if I have a support crew, I might give them to her when we meet up.

There is a third category of things that I don't necessarily want to throw away, but might consider it. I have some light running jackets and my cheap gloves that fit in to this category. I don't want to keep replacing them and kind of like them, but I'm not incredibly attached to them.

Yes and no. For the most part, I've run in enough different weather at home that I know what works and what doesn't. This is an often unacknowledged part of the training for these races - getting your equipment ready for everything that might be thrown at you.

SAFD - I run hot so my threshold for doing anything besides shorts and a t-shirt is somewhere around 45 degrees. I might add a pair of stretchy gloves, but those would probably come off fairly quickly. Then I'll add either arm sleeves or a thin running jacket, capris, and maybe a hat until somewhere around freezing. If I need full length tights, I'm probably moving the run inside and I usually don't enter races where the temps are likely to be below freezing.

Don't overthink it. Outside of the marathon, the temperature doesn't change *that much* during the race. Make sure you have enough layers to stay warm in the corrals, and then things you don't mind ditching along the way as you warm up. As other have said, this is a good time to thrift for things, dig stuff out of your closet you might not have worn in ages, watch the clearance stuff at Costco or Sams Club (I picked up $5 jackets back in February, but there's always hoodies and stuff that gets clearanced out right after christmas), or get some cheap fleece blankets during a black friday sale and simply make a slit in the middle for your head to fit through and you have a poncho! Bathrobes are also a popular item, but I've never been able to find them for a price I'm willing to toss on the side of the road.

If it's a cooler day, consider leaving some warm layers in your gearcheck bag to put on post-race. I'm pretty sure that there were several members here that discovered the wonder of having a few articles of clothing available post-race.

Not to worry, we will all obsess about the weather once New Year hits and we *have* to pack.

SAFD: It someone depends on the run I'm doing. I HATE being cold so if I'm just heading out for an easy run or if the race is not a goal race, I'd rather end up getting a bit too warm than being freezing to start. If it's a goal race or a hard workout, then it's the opposite and I'm going tank and shorts down to probably 45 degrees. Would likely add arm warmers that I can roll down to around my wrists when I don't need them anymore, they make good sweat wipers and tissues.. yes I'm that gross girl blowing her nose on her sleeves because she's incapable of blowing a snot rocket (which is arguably equally gross - so everyone's just gross 🤣)

SAFD - another Floridian response: we’re just wrapping up summer here on the West-Central FL coast, so I’m still in tanks and shorts. But a cold front is coming this week, and it looks like the real deal! I actually won’t be running during it, though, so no change yet. Once the Feels Like drops below 65º, it’ll be capris and a tee on warmer sunny days, tights and long sleeves on cooler days or after dark - add a jacket and light gloves blow 60º. Below 50º and with some wind chill? Thermal tights, tops, gloves, ear cover, neck gaiter, layers the works. I don’t handle cold well AT ALL.
