Marathon Weekend 2026

I liked that all the medals that year has a similar hexagon shape as well, to tie them all together.

The yellow outline on Oswald and the yellow stripe both came off of my Oswald medal.
I also lost some of the yellow parts of this medal (the Oswald outline and one of the parts of 10K). So while the idea of the design isn’t terrible, it was poor quality and it’s not one of my favorites anymore :(

While I think the medals for next year are adorable and I can’t wait to earn mine (10K and half), I too wish they’d step back from the overlaid themes and go back to something more classic like the medals from 2018/2019. I also absolutely adore my Dopey medals from 2022. The full set is so cohesive and I love the iridescence for the WDW 50th.

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). We're creeping closer to the big week(end) at this point, so let's turn our attention to that most critical piece of race day gear: the costume! Do you plan on running in a costume during MW? What do you plan to show up as? Most importantly, is your costume race ready and tested at this point? Any tips and tricks you have for designing and running in costume would likely be appreciated by folks new to the costume game, too.

SAFD: I'm not much of a costume person. The closest I typically come running in costume is my Star Wars themed InB shirts. I've got Mando, R2D2 and C3PO, although I don't currently fit into them. I don't really have anything planned for MW, although I like to wear my medieval armor InB for the marathon, and probably will again this year if I can shed a few pounds. You could stretch that to call it a "prince of your choice" costume if you were being particularly charitable.

SAFD: I'm not much of a costume person either. At most I'll do themed fabric sewn into regular running clothes. I have some plans for this year, but we'll see how much time I have running and work. For the 5k my son wants to dress as Pluto in his Chef Mickeys outfit. I might do a Cinderella inspired outfit for the half if I can find the right fabrics (and time). For the full I already bought fabric to make a Dopey coloured skirt. I'm in the market for a green shirt that matches, but I haven't had luck finding it yet. Actually, speaking of, I should probably go work on that!

When I’ve done costumes it’s been for the 5k and 10k during Dopey. This year I’ve only got the Marathon on my schedule and I’m trying to put in a PR. While this is a modest goal, I’ve run seven marathons but have not particularly cared about pace, I still don’t want to add any additional degree of difficulty with a costume. I may Disney bound or wear a character shirt or something if it works, but I’m going to be all about comfort and function when 26.2 is on the docket.

SAFD:

I mean, I don't go crazy, but yeah. I need to have fun with it! I feel like my level of costuming lands more in the "heavy bounding" and not necessarily all the way into fully-immersive costuming compared to how all-out some runners go.

So far the only thing we have nailed down for MW are SW costumes for the 5k (myself, DD, and DH as C3PO, Vader, and R2D2 respectively) since it's "science fiction" themed.

Tips:
-consider all the ways you may chafe as a result of your costume and do what you can to minimize/eliminate it. TEST RUN for anything longer than a 5k for sure.
-consider how you will use a bathroom while costumed, especially a porta where you will likely not want things to be touching the floor
-accessories really really help bring a costume together, but have a plan to make them hands-free for longer distances

-DON'T be afraid to go NON-DISNEY with your costume. DH and I dressed in "A League of their Own" costumes a few years ago for the 5k and had people yelling to us nearly the whole time. Even in the reunion area!

-OR, to take a non-Disney idea and twist it to fit the way @The Expert and I did last year with our NFL costumes. (If you are new to the boards, she ran in a KC Chiefs Patrick Mahomes/Kermit mashup, and I ran in an Aiden Hutchinson Detroit Lions/Lion King mashup.) The response from other runners was pretty big.

Maybe I need to run as Hutch again this year with a mini Superbowl trophy for the marathon since the theme is Fantasy. :rotfl2:

SAFD: Well, my wife asked us this week if we want to run in any costumes for the Food & Wine 5k we’re running in later this month. The kids said absolutely not though that could change. We’re struggling to get them to wear anything Halloween related to the MNSSHP we’re going to later that night so my expectations were pretty low. My wife and I might dress up. She and my son went to the Chicago marathon this morning to cheer on some friends but she didn’t see too much in the way of costumes.
