Marathon Weekend 2023

The 5 miler at 8:20 pace is quite a bit better than the 9:22 10 miler. So I used that.
Awesome...Thank you!!!!

I HIGHLY doubt I'd sniff anywhere near 4:00 hours for the marathon - I doubt at this point I can make it even in 4:45 hours. I wish - maybe 2024.

SAFD: so, even though I train in colder weather (Chicago and Syracuse), I really don’t have an issue with heat (i.e. the absolute temperature), although I do have to adjust my efforts a bit in higher humidity. That being said, the thing that seems to really sap my energy is direct sunlight. I’m sure it’s partly mental, but the sun beating down on me during a run is my Achilles heel.
Direct sunlight saps my energy too, which presents me with a dilemma. I dislike wearing hats because they make my head hot. I’m still searching for the perfect hat that keeps my head from overheating and allows the water I pour on my head to actually reach my head.

I live in Dallas so I get a lot more heat than cold. I prefer running in the heat over cold, but this past summer when temps were over 100 most days, I didn’t run much at all. Temps for the Dallas 10k Saturday were high 60s and it dropped to 52 for the half today, which I found ideal. But last year it was 33 before the half and I nearly didn’t run it because of the cold.

Random thought I had that may have been discussed before. Since Blizzard Beach is open this year, that means the marathon route can't reasonably go through the parking lot. So what do we think the route will look like? Return of the out and back section? Kinda hoping they go back to the 2019 route

I really hope that we go through the Wide World of Sports. I know that there have been a lot of complaints about that course in the past, but I think that it would really cool to run through the stadium.

I don't disagree. There is a 40 sec/mile gap between expected 10 mile pace and what you recently did. So the limited data says that your speed is fine, but your endurance is lacking. Plus, the marathon finish suggested is a time only about 6% of converters actually hit based on your 5 mile race pace. A more realistic marathon tempo projection based on your 10 miler pace under similar conditions would be:

10% chance of 4:22 or better
25% chance of 4:30 or better
50% chance of 4:44 or better

SAFD: I live here on the west central FL coast, about 100 miles west of WDW, so I’m “used” to the heat, but let me tell ya - being acclimated doesn’t mean it feels good lol! I think there’s this misconception that acclimation makes it magically not feel miserable and I’m sorry to say that just isn’t true. It always sucks - I think our only advantage is that we spend most of the year existing in the heat, and dealing with it is so second-nature, we don’t need to put much thought into handling it come race day. I pretty intuitively know to hydrate/electrolyte more in higher heat, to slow my pace, to spend less time outdoors, and probably most importantly, to know the signs of heat stress and do something about it before it progresses to heat stroke.

ETA: I FROZE last night at MK… it was 60*, around 80% humidity, and I was wearing jeans, tee, light sweater, and a fleece half-zip. Currently in my resort room wearing two layers because the heat isn’t turning on with the thermostat set at 74. I guess I’m still heat acclimated lol!

Re: possible marathon course… I was at MK yesterday and driving out, saw no reason the course can’t use the usual Floridian Way/Bear Island route. The endless construction around the TTC and gas station continues, but the road is open. Also, the giant pile of dirt in the TTC? Still there. #longlivethebigpileofdirt

They make those! They're called visors 🙃😝
Our local tri club is getting new hats this year where the hat material is a lightweight mesh, and I got to use one in Australia. Liked it better than my visors, which never seem to fit right because they don’t have adjustable bands.

I use these performance visors from Gone For a Run, they just stretch to fit your head. And can be tucked in a pocket until you need them.

SAFD: I am kind of fussy, temperature-wise (🤦‍♀️) and the heat / humidity are a nagging fear of mine (my first long RunDisney was the Princess Half 2019 and it was really warm for me). Unfortunately, I am also a bit of a wimp about cold, but as long as it isn't icy, I'll go out - we had the misfortune of a week or so of bad icy snow, which put my training a little behind. I broke down and went to a public gym for the treadmill, which was also kind of good for heat training, but wow, was it hard compared to outside Fall running! It had been a few years since I'd been on a treadmill for more than a few minutes.

I am lucky to live in the Vancouver (Canada) area, where we tend to not get a lot of snow, and would take cool / rainy over hot / sunny for any run.

Jumping back in after a long break - as all the books & training plans note, marathon training is a different beast from anything shorter, and I'm very glad I didn't sign up for Dopey! Don't think our apartment has ever been this messy  and no spare time for much else. But it does make half-marathon training seem delightfully doable!

It's Monday again! That means it's time to wear out the refresh button on my computer. C'mon event guide!

(I may have gotten really excited, briefly, this morning when the page took more than 5sec to reload. But alas, the password screen is still what popped up.)
aaaaaaand with the SS medals being released I feel like we are NOT getting the guide today.

I'm going to guess that it comes out on Wednesday.

wow, this is nice...your spreadsheet work and running analysis has become awesome

I saw this and immediately thought of you and how sad you’d be haha. I think we will get it Weds.

hahahaha!

I just really need something to get me through the next 3 weeks. And I need to think about it sooner than later because after this week things are going to massively snowball with the schedule. We got really spoiled with how early we got it for the 2022 race weekend I think.

oh and I cant lose that weight because I drink to much Coke...no self control
I feel this in my soul!

SAFD: cold cold cold and more cold. I hate heat. Absolutely hate it. Anything above 60 is too hot for me. I would love temps in the low 40s (even lower would be great, but I want it to be high enough that it can be warm enough later in the day to enjoy the pool), clouds, low humidity (ha!), and little to no wind. But since I'm not running the marathon this year, I'm ok with anything except pouring rain.

I had mild COVID last year about 2 weeks before MW and was able to complete the 5K, 10K and Half with no problems. I dropped out of the marathon at 20, but I'm not sure how much of that was COVID related and how much was heat, general Dopey exhaustion and not being the best shape in the first place.

SAFD:

Another Dallas/TX person here (hi, @Neon Cactus!!).

I ran most of the summer in miserable temperatures, having briefly retreated to treadmills before discovering that I hate that even more somehow. While I complained about it pretty incessantly, I did quite a few miles in the 80s and 90s. The last few months have been much cooler, which I've enjoyed quite a bit more.

I am a fairly heavy and salty sweater, and I've seen my performance take a nosedive in the past due to insufficient water or electrolytes. So while I'm not really doing anything for heat training, I am doing some heat planning. I've been taking more salt supplements when running, and I have a dozen Chrome tabs open trying to figure out whether I can actually O.D. on SaltStick. I'm fine with a reasonable slowdown due to temperature, but I need to stay hydrated much better than I have in the past.
