Marathon Weekend 2023

I’m slow to adapt and one earbud has always done the job so I haven’t really looked into bone conduction models. It’s a good shout though; they’d probably be perfect for my preferences when I’m running (or mowing the lawn).

They're definitely great for running, but they don't work well for mowing the yard (or blowing leaves). The noise from the power equipment overwhelms the bone conduction.

Anymore, I do not listen to anything while running. A great chance to have a clear head to think through life, future plans, next vacation, work, kids schedules, my fantasy football team, etc. You know, all of the important things. But, right when Covid hit, I struggled with nothing to really plan or think about with vacations cancelled and no sports. So, I jumped on a couple of podcasts. With things closer to normal, I have gone back to just me and the road.

Now, when I started running two decades ago, it was exclusively music. I actually timed each song to the area of the course I would be on. So, EPCOT songs/background loops for those first four miles around Epcot. During the harder parts, I would play more upbeat pop music. Always had the 30 minute Fantasmic music playing around mile 20. No matter how tired I was, I would always be nearly sprinting and flailing my arms like Mickey when I hear the finale of that. Probably looked weird during long training runs to people driving past me, but, twenty miles in, you do whatever it takes.

SAFD:

Good Morning runDisney Allstars! Got a two part question for you all today. Do you like to run with music and/or Podcasts? And if you said yes what do you like to listen to; any recommendations?
For my short runs I use Peloton Outdoor App, they have music playing and tell you when to do run and what to do while your doing it. I love it, feels like I have a real running coach with me. For my long runs I have podcast, I listen to a lot of disney podcast I listen to all the Dis podcasts and any other disney podcast that strikes my fancy. Every now again I will listen to a running one. Then I also have running playlist of music that I listen too that is heavy on disney music when I am not feeling the podcast. I really cannot run without something, I get bored. The only time I run without something is Princess races I did, I was entertained enough to not need it. I only wear it in one ear so I can still hear things around me and make sure no one can sneak up on me.

SAFD: Music when I’m outside and Netflix, etc when I’m on the treadmill. I have Spotify playlists, but I usually end up using Pandora radio stations since they usually have newer stuff. My mind tends to wander too much for audiobooks and podcasts. I tell my husband i do my best thinking when I’m outside running 😬 I don’t watch TV that much so I use the treadmill to catch up on shows or save specific shows as motivation for the treadmill.

I like audiobooks.

Running is my time to de-stress, so if I'm thinking about what I need to do, what I need to get at the store, etc., I find myself not enjoying the run, and thinking, at times, that maybe I should cut it a few miles short to get to my to-do list, instead of just losing myself in a book.

SAFD [and jumping into this thread as a 1st time marathoner-to-be :) (4th RD race weekend for me, 2nd visit to WDW for us, 1st RD race for husband).]

I alternate between music (Disney or 70s-80s pop/rock) with guided Nike Run Club runs and nothing, but have also tried the British NHS couch-5k podcasts. I really enjoy the NRC runs. I also do one ear bud and “hear through” setting when listening to something.

Welcome!

Thank you!
Going to jump in with a question for everyone / anyone… I’ve done a search, but haven’t found any recent info.
Does anyone know if RD is bringing back Race Retreat?
I saw a few short reviews of “Runner’s Square” for MW 2022 but for me, the main benefit was climate control (AC) and seating for the wait until going to the start line, and it doesn’t sound like RS was quite the same. I’ve been out of touch on RD since 2019 though (can’t make it down to Florida very frequently) so I may have missed any news.

SAFD:
I always listen to music (w/ my Aftershokz!) when running alone, I much prefer to run with friends and chat the whole time - makes it go by so much faster! I typically listen to Spotify or Pandora - playlists that get mixed up with current new music plus recent/old hits. For long runs, I will often listen to my Alt 80's station on Pandora.
I do listen to a lot of podcasts in the car so maybe I should try listening to them while running too!

I did like Race Retreat for those cold mornings (when that used to happen at MW 😆).
I didn’t use the Runner’s Square when it switched to that because the climate control for me was the main point! I haven’t heard anything on whether it will ever come back.
I can’t remember if the rumor back when it switched to Runner’s Square was that they didn’t have room for the tent because of some construction or something????

So far this year I am extremely disappointed in runDisney's support. Got very terse responses to questions regarding the registration fiasco even when I had over $3,000 of holds on my credit card for a week. I managed to get a half and full registration for myself and they won't combine them into a Goofy. This will be my fifth MW and is increasingly likely it will be last.

SAFD: Almost always listening to something - running is the only time I have to do it, so I make the most of it! Usually music, and I have VERY eclectic taste: I've got two all-purpose running playlists, each with around 800-1000 songs. I also have an all jazz playlist, an all Mozart playlist, a Star Wars themed playlist, many Grateful Dead shows, Vivaldi's "Four Seasons", an all Disco playlist, an all EDM playlist, Halloween, Christmas, & July 4th themed playlists, "Swan Lake," an all rap/hip hop playlist... I love music! 🎧 I also love dampening ambient sound: I live in a densely populated, car-heavy place and it's annoyingly loud.

I have some podcasts I love and will sometimes listen to while running: This American Life, Reply All, Radiolab, F1 Beyond the Grid, Clean Sport. I don't run as well listening to podcasts, though, so I only do that on easy days.

ETA: Oh, and I'm still rocking a couple pairs of YurBuds. Corded. 10ish years old. I'll be very sad when they finally all die - I've never found anything as comfortable!

I also am in for the half and the full… I was hoping to upgrade to the goofy challenge too 😫

I doubt it- I feel like it would be a Club runDisney benefit if they did. I had the opportunity to do it during the 2015 half, though (a random person on Facebook gave me her extra wristband so I didn’t even have to pay for it!). It was pretty nice. I do feel like now though there is a pressure to get to the corrals earlier so people might not spend as much time there.

It's looking like I got a DVC rental for an AKL savanna studio! I had a room booked already but was hoping a DVC would pop up so I have been stalking a few different sites. One popped up for 1/4-1/10, only 1 day short on the front end. I can deal with moving rooms after 1 night, especially basically within the same resort, since all I am doing on the 4th is expo and maybe a short park day. I feel like I may be taking someone's reservation that was planning on dopey and fell victim to the major registration day issues.
