Marathon Weekend 2023

I saw absolutely beautiful brown leggings at Target, and couldn’t figure out what I’d use them for, so I didn’t get them. But then I was there with my grandma and she was like “those would go great with your Bruno poncho!”And she was right, of course.

Ahh that would've been great!

Jumping in on this thread as I'm 90% sure I'm signing up, also WOW I need to update my signature it's been YEARS

Any word from Club RunDisney folk signing up today? Also on the events page I'm sure I say the dates before and now it says 'Registration Opening Soon' but maybe I imagined that and just got the dates from the blog post?

@Ariel484 hey girl fancy seeing you here

Hey girl heeyyyyyyy

This SAFD has only made my registration anxiety worse y'all!
Anyone remember how fast Dopey sold out for the 2018 race? That was the last anniversary year so I think it would be a good point of comparison.

Of course there's a post for that!

I figured having one thread for historical race weekend sell out timing would be useful. There's always a lot of hand wringing over the registration process and the timing of sell outs. So I figured some historical data would be useful for those discussions in one easily findable collection of information. I'll updated this thread after each weekend's registration.

I have done "just" the marathon four times and the "just" the half once for Marathon weekend and have never felt FOMO.

Registration willing, I am doing Dopey this year because it is the 10th anniversary of my 1st Disney and first ever marathon. After that, I'm happy being a "just" for race weekends.

I agree with this. I've done the half twice and full twice and never felt any Goofy or Dopey FOMO.

Me too (or is it Me three?). I've "just" done the last two Marathons and am planning to do "just" (or is it ""just""?) the half during Marathon Weekend 2023. I admire and cheer on the Dopeys but have never experienced FOMO. I guess that at this point in my life and running career (I've completed all five of my five total marathons since turning 60) I'm comfortable being me on my terms.

Now if I was 30 or 40 years younger, then perhaps FOMO might be a thing.

OK, I have to ask.... I've googled it and can't figure it out..... what does SAFD stand for?

Since we are talking about FOMO....my FOMO around the disney race weekends mostly stems from the fact that I'm there anyway, and since the travel/lodging is such a big part of the trip expense, NOT doing the races makes me feel like I'm getting "less" out of my trip. Last year, our initial plan was to fly down on Wednesday evening (which meant no expo and therefore no 5k) and DH would run the 10k and I would run Goofy.

But then DH decided he wanted to leave earlier (which is a thing he always does) AND I managed to snag a "leftover" charity 5k bib for him. DD went with us, so one of us had to be at the resort with her each morning while the other ran, so Dopey was obviously not an option until the last minute (if I could arrange childcare with my parents) but after I finished the full on Sunday I was just a little annoyed that I missed out on 3 more medals by only 9.3 miles.

So if DH does say YES to running the '23 races, I feel like I need to squeeze every drop out of those days with the races since we would definitely NOT be going to the parks.

And even though I'm feeling pretty apathetic about running right now, I'm also working out when I would need to start a formal training plan....18 weeks comes out to the end of August, which is also near when the kids would go back to school and I would stop working, and therefore have time to fit it all in.

I can't remember, @lookingforsunshine, have you done Marathon Weekend before? If so, you'll have a pretty good idea of whether you'd have FOMO from not doing the four-race challenge. If not, it may come down to your personality and how you feel when surrounded by an atmosphere focused on something other than what you're doing.

A number of folks have reported not having FOMO while doing fewer races or Goofy. I'm the opposite. I ran the 10k, 1/2 and full my first Marathon Weekend (no challenge registrations at all). It was my first RunDisney event and I was floored by how focused everything seemed to be on the four-race challenge. So much so that I didn't feel like I was experiencing everything the weekend had to offer. The next two MWs, I ran the four-race challenges (even though 1 was 2017) and loved being a part of the central atmosphere. In 2019, I thought "been there, done that, have LOTS of shirts" and decided to run Goofy to save on $$$ and vacation days. I absolutely hated that weekend and felt like I wasn't getting the most out of my experience. Now it's just the four-race challenge for me (registration permitting) every year.

YMMV, of course, but I just wanted to throw my experience out there, as the FOMO can be very real.

I did the half in 2015 (it was my first half. I don’t think I knew what Dopey even was then), and I attempted Goofy this year but got swept during the marathon. So I feel like trying Goofy again is a way to redeem myself… but I know I will have FOMO over the Pluto medal (I did this year).

If I try to register for the 5K + Goofy but learn that the 5K sold out, will I be automatically registered for Goofy or will I have a chance to go back and change to Dopey?

In other news, my DH booked the Disney Wish today! I’ve never been on a cruise before. I am excited for the Castaway Cay Challenge… and I also heard that cruises have TRIVIA and BINGO. I love both of those things. Am I 31 or 20 or 97? No one knows.

Prepare to be spoiled on the cruise! The trivia is a lot of fun. Additionally, there are animation classes where they have a castmember show you how to draw various characters.

You hit the nail on the head wherein it depends upon your personality. I ran "just" the full marathon this past January because it was my first marathon and I didn't want to push things too much. The only FOMO that I felt was when I took a picture in front of the 26.2 sign and saw the Goofy 39.3 sign. I took a picture of it to inspire me to try it in the future. However, I never really felt like the Challenges were the focus and that I was missing out. Perhaps it's just my personality-type in which I have tunnel vision focused on the race that I was there to run.

We went on our first cruise a few years ago though I don't remember which boat. Never thought of myself as a cruise person but I LOVED it! We ended up going on an Alaska cruise the following year, which was amazing. I've only ever been on disney cruises so I don't know how they compare to other companies. But, disney did it right! And castaway cay was awesome!

FOMO is a legit issue for me, I own that. My first Marathon Weekend was 2015. I had heard about Dopey and was excited to try it. At the time it filled quickly! I did not know this and waited until after work to register and it was full. I ended up doing Goofy that year and I still had a great time and felt very challenged. But I sure was jealous of the Dopey runners. From that year on I have managed to get a Dopey registration and hope to again next week.

I do think that runDisney has toned down the central focus on Dopey. And that is a good thing. All the races are important and represent challenges, failures and successes for different people. And there is no such thing as “just” for any race!
