Marathon Weekend 2017!

Old marathon PR 5:18,new marathon PR set today 5:06,I really really wanted and went for a sub 5 hour time but my legs started feeling like jello around mile 22,I was feeling good all race, but my legs didn't cooperate at the end.I hung around the 4:45 pace group for like 4-5 miles starting at mile 17 but they just got too fast for me at 22.Obviously the cold had a lot to do with how good I felt up until mile 22-23 but these temperatures and especially the wind were just out of control,I'm not used to this.I got to the parking lot,sat in my car for like 30 minutes until I got the nerve to step outside and then went straight to the corrals and sat down in a fetal position with my blanket totally covering me until 5:30,plus I lost my gloves right after the security check,I was putting my running belts that just got checked away and I put the gloves in my shorts pocket, forgot about them and they must have fallen out.The volunteers and spectators deserve a medal just as much as the runners being out there in those conditions, overall it was a good and memorable race.

Any healthy person can do it with the proper preparation - and that's the key, proper preparation. If you are running 5k's now and are willing to commit to the training, then go for it! The course truly is amazing and there is nothing like running it, finally hearing the gospel choir at Epcot, and completing your first marathon at Disney.
I've actually already run/walked a handful of 10Ks and 2 half marathons, including the Wine and Dine Lumiere Challenge in November. So it's just deciding whether I want to take that jump into doubling the distance. Because I walk when I need to and am not super fast, I've felt really good after both of my halfs, so I feel like I could do it, but the task is daunting! At my pace, doing a marathon would probably mean spending over 5 hours out there.

Great race; although at the beginning I wasn't thinking it was so great. I was just tired, and thinking I was over marathons. This is my 4th marathon since the beginning of September, and marathon training just starts to really get old a week before the last 20 mile training run. About the halfway point I was feeling pretty tired. I think I got a second wind for a few miles around mile 16. And at that point was happy to be running Disney again. I never set out to PR Disney races, my goal is just to enjoy it, so I'm glad my attitude turned around. :) I stopped for mile marker pictures, pictures of characters, and one picture with a character, Meeko!! (There was pretty much not a line, so why not! I should have stopped for a picture with Belle - no line, and she looked just like a spectator). My final time of 5:30 was only about 8-9 minutes slower than my PR time, so I'm pretty happy with that. I probably had one too many layers on this morning, but when we were in the shade and the wind was blowing, I was glad to have them. I used my gloves as a cooling/warming mechanism. They kept coming off and then going back on.

So glad for this thread and all the positive notes and advice!

There's nothing wrong with a 5 hour marathon, everyone who finishes these deserves special kudos if it takes them 3 hours or 7 hours, its not easy. One of my favorite things to do during marathon weekend is to finish my race and then go sit in the plaza between Future World and World Showcase to go cheer on the the runners finishing later in the race, you see some that are struggling with it but they're doing it and they're going to finish it,I like seeing that determination, the ones struggling the most I like reminding them how far they've gone and that the finish line is right there just past the big ball.My half PR is 2:10 and my new full PR is 5:06,I'm very happy with that 5:06 cause I felt good most of the race even though looking at my half PR of 2:10 you would think I should be at least in the 4:30 range for fulls but like I said fulls are not easy and if I keep trying one day I will get under 5 hours. As others have said this Disney full course is special, nothing like running through the entire Disney property it makes finishing it a whole lot easier than other races,I say go for it and stop worrying if its going to take you however long to finish.

Trying to run sub5, but after my first restroom stop very early, I knew, that I would not make it.

Anyway, the first half was great, right after AK I got problems with my left. Those problems get away while running through WWoS but led into knee pain. Those the second half was mostly walk-run-walk.

Anyway, did the distance, got one photo with Snow White and got a new PR. Years ago I finished Berlin 6:18, today 5:47, things getting better.

Spectators were awesome too, so many runners & spectators liked my XMas Sweater

Hope I can walk again soon.

You can certainly make the jump from where you are. Honestly, the biggest issue to factor into your decision whether to go for it is not the additional time on course during the race itself. After training, the difference between 4:00, 5:00 or 6:00 during the race won't be that big a deal.

In my opinion, the question you have to ask yourself when taking that step is "do I have the time to do the training?" Look up some of the popular training plans like Higdon or Galloway that have good first timer plans and calculate how many hours of training they will entail at your pacing. Only you can determine if stepping up to the marathon is worth the additional work to you.

There were times this summer and fall that I felt like training was a 2nd job and only my wife's crazy work hours kept it from being a stressor for us. I'm not trying to scare you off. I wouldn't trade my outcome for the world and I'm hooked on marathons at this point. You just need to go into it with your eyes open knowing what to expect and how it will affect the rest of your life.

All that being said, I hope you do make the jump. Completing a marathon, any marathon, ranks as one of the most gratifying life accomplishments I've experienced.

...My time was 3:07:07, good enough for 9th overall woman and 2nd in AG...

First marathon in the books!

Few other thoughts/observations:
...
- running through Magic Kingdom was something I'll remember for the rest of my life.
- running through ESPN is an experience I'd rather forget. I struggled a bit through there and that stretch feels like 10 miles.
- as big of a headache as the expo was, the race itself was very well done. The volunteers were amazing and I tried to thank as many as I could.
..
All in all, this was an unforgettable experience.

I concur with so much of this! The castle was lovely as ever... and I really don't enjoy much about the ESPN section.

Great job MARATHONER!

Whaaaaaat? I came here to run my first half and ended up running my first FULL marathon?? Wow. I have no words. You people that do these on purpose amaze me.

Great job MARATHONER! And "yes," marathoning is a strange fascination. For me, there's something about finding out how my preparation and strategy pan out. Do I "bonk?" Do I "negative split?"

Well I finished my very first "Double Donald" today ;) (I transferred from the cancelled half)

I've done the Disney marathon a few times and knew what I was getting into. Even though I cut back my training for the half I did pretty well. The waiting area reminded me of penguins huddling to stay warm.

The BAD news is that I tripped over a reflector at mile 22 and clonked my head. I finished the race and visited the med tent to make sure I didn't have a concussion. So far so good.

It's weird you say that cause I saw more people trip and fall today than probably all my Disney fulls combined.I think I saw five, the first one a girl tripped in the backstage MK area in that spot where all the runners steps make a thumping noise, she was up in like half a second, the same for the last one entering the path between DHS and Epcot. There was one that worried me as I had seen him running and he just didn't look steady,he fell coming into DHS by ToT,he fell and stayed down long enough that I thought something more was wrong but he ended up OK.

It seems like a lot of us had GI issues. Mine was so bad in the second half at one point I was wondering if I was going to have to pull myself. Found a walking buddy for about 3 miles helped and then between 19 and 20 began running with the 7:00 hr pacers (thank god for the Galloway groups) and that got me through to Hollywood Studios and past the last hard sweep to be able to walk in.

Doing okay afterwards headed to Epcot for dinner. Was originally going to do Magic Kingdom but decided against it.

Congrats to everyone who finished today. It's a great accomplishment.

Congrats to everyone who got a PR.

DW and I enjoyed meeting some of you on Friday at Hurricane Hannah's and finally put some faces to the names.

Assuming we survive the registration process in 5 short weeks, we'll be back trying our first Dopey in 2018.

Ran my first-ever 5K last Thursday. Still floating. My wife and daughter saw me at the beginning and end. Talked to so many great people in the corral. My wife INSISTED that we get a picture of me and my medal in front of the castle!

HOLY COW THAT WAS FUN!

My daughter is already talking about doing next year's 5K with me! And I'm eyeing the 10K now...

I told her that I felt like I'd passed a threshold and I was part of "the gang" now. I am so glad I did this!

Let's do this one more time...

Good morn...er, evening, runDisney All- Stars! It's approximately 52 weeks from the 2018 marathon.

Today's Sundays are for Disney question: With marathon weekend in the books, how YOU doing?

Very sore and very sad it's over. We train for these things for so long and build the anticipation and then it seems like they are done in a flash! Like lightning, even! Too soon?
