Marathon Weekend 2017!

What is your choice getting the BIB fixed Safety Pins or Numberbelt?!

Safety pins, with one exception - I use the belt for triathlons. I usually hate having something around my waist, but started using the belt for quick transitions in triathlon. It doesn't bother me in tris (maybe because my clothes are wet, so it doesn't shift around?) So I tried the belt for a half marathon and couldn't stand it - back to pins!

Taper. Ugh. I'm definitely starting to feel sick (I always crash after running around like crazy before Christmas) and yesterday I thought I pulled something in my left leg, but it's fine today. Back to that video posted earlier about the taper. :)

So, how long does it typically take to get in and out of the expo? I'm trying to plan the rest of my Saturday at AK and that's the one thing I can't account for. If I go right at 10, have my waiver printed and signed and just plan to check out the official runDisney merch, is that roughly an hour? Basically, I'm wondering if I can make a 11:20-12:20 Kilimanjaro Safari ADR.

Between running a marathon, bringing a toddler and trying to craft custom touring plans to accommodate both, I'm beginning to think I'm a sadist.
You should be okay. Saturday at the expo usually isn't that busy.

Woo! More corral N friends! This is my first 1/2 Marathon. I only started running a few years ago and until this year my longest run was a measly 4 miles! I ran my first official road race for POT for this! I feel like I cannot remotely keep up with the crowd on here since I am SLOW as molasses. But everyone here has been super supportive. I keep having to remind myself that I will be out there actually doing it, no matter the pace and you will too!!

Happy to help! I think this is a good time to re-post one of my favorite post's I've made:

Two kinds of impressive: The person who finished in first may not be the most impressive, it could be who finished last (text reposted from earlier)

To me, there are two types of impressive (and neither is necessarily more impressive than the other). My basis for my opinion is the following.

1. I believe in perception of effort. The harder you run the faster you go. But everyone's 75% is equal to everyone else's 75% when relating perception of effort.
2. I believe that time spent running is an important factor, more so than mileage.
3. Mileage is a function of perceived effort x time. If you run faster (effort), or longer (time), then you increase your mileage.

Scenario 1

We have two people standing next to each other. I tell them both to run at 75% effort for 90 minutes. They both complete the workout.

Person A - 75% effort at 90 minutes
Person B - 75% effort at 90 minutes

Which is more impressive? Based on the information given, they are equal.

Person A ran 10 miles
Person B ran 5 miles

Which is more impressive? Based on the information given, Person A is more impressive. Person A's 75% effort is faster than Person B's 75% effort.

Scenario 2

We have two people standing next to each other. I tell them both to run at 75% effort for 13.1 miles. They both complete the workout.

Person C - 75% effort for 13.1 miles
Person D - 75% effort for 13.1 miles

Which is more impressive? Based on the information given, they are equal.

Person C finished in 1:45
Person D finished in 3:00

Which is more impressive? Based on the information given, Person D is more impressive. Person D ran at the same effort level as Person C, yet did it for 71% longer in time than Person C.

So, to me there are two kinds of impressive.

1. It's impressive to me that Galen Rupp can run at 75% effort and that equals a 5:00 min/mile. It's impressive because when I run at 75% effort it equals a 8:00 min/mile. Galen is faster than me at the same effort level.
2. It's impressive to me that Person D ran at 75% effort for 3 hours. It's impressive because when I run at 75% effort it equals 1:45. Person D is able to maintain the same effort level as me, but for 71% longer in time.

Hopefully this helps make sense of my idea. So when someone says I ran a 15:00 min/mile for a half marathon, but I gave it everything I got. I come away impressed. That person's perception of effort was the same as mine, but yet they maintained that effort for significantly longer than me.

Look at it one other way. When someone goes out and runs a marathon in 5:00, for me to match the same physical feat (same effort X time) I would have to run 40 miles instead of 26.2 miles. I don't believe I could run 40 miles in 5:00.

So I come away impressed by anyone that's running no matter what. Everyone one of you impresses me! If you have a goal, and you've been working hard to achieve it, then I will be equally happy for you when you achieve your goal no matter what it is.

So I have a question: Why is Magical Miles always such a hassle?? Why do they have so many problems getting people their tags? I have confirmation emails from months ago and got NOTHING from them - so frustrating.

I know two on course meet and greet for the race weekend.

Goofy will meet in future world during the 5K
Genie will meet in Morocco during the 10K

I know Genie sometimes meets there during races but I don't recall goofy in future world. I think it someone else there last year.

Since the 5K is Pluto themed, is there a Pluto meet and greet anywhere before or after the race?

Magical Miles or Disney Magical Express (DME)? If it's DME, they've had some issues with tags lately according to my TA. She had to call last week because they had forgotten to print and send my tags. I did learn, though, that now if they forget your tags you don't have to pick up the luggage yourself. They scan your bag claim ticket and use that to get your bag and get it to the resort now. I'd rather have the tags, though, so give them a call and see what happened.

I ran outside for the first time in probably two weeks today. Felt great running outside again. Now it's going back down in the teens and 20s for the next couple days.

I hope I'm not too late to be added to DopeyBadger's list. I just want to add that the generosity of time and spirit shown on this board is awesome! I expect my times to be slow, but I will post anyway.

Called twice to confirm my tags and my reservation on magical express. Got nothing so I called again...no record of me ever making that reservation, which is why we didn't get tags

I meant magical express....oops. i don't know squat about Disney. I don't even care about the tags (will be doing only carry-on) but i just want the letter that lets me on the bus. 2nd time using this service, and first time was no problem, but lately i've been reading people not getting their tags, etc. Oh well, i have email confirmation so worst case i can show them that

You don't need a letter to get on the bus when you get there. You only need to tap your magicband when you arrive and they let you on. The letter is what you need to leave and go back to the airport, Disney prints out that form for you.

That is the reason I asked. In triathlon I am also used to wear a numberbelt, but at the Disneyland Paris Half, the numberbelt felt somehow "wrong", ... Maybe I try to get these magnets at the expo.

Probably a silly question but when you pick up your bib, does RunDisney provide the safety pins as well or do I need to pack my own? Thanks!
