Marathon Weekend 2017!

Let's do this one more time...

Good morn...er, evening, runDisney All- Stars! It's approximately 52 weeks from the 2018 marathon.

Today's Sundays are for Disney question: With marathon weekend in the books, how YOU doing?

Doing great! Really enjoyed the marathon and it's making me reconsider not doing Disney races for a while. It was nice to run for fun and not worry about a time as I usually am. Maybe Goofy next year as Dopey takes up too much time and it give me excuse to hang out on the disboards. Safe travels home for everyone.

I just have to say, your pictures on my Strava feed yesterday made my day! If I can have half as much fun running the marathon next year I will be thrilled:)

Does anyone know what other races use the Galloway pace groups? I had a great time running with the 7:00 hr pacers for that 4 mile stretch between near the exit of WWOS and the parking lot at DHS and am thinking I would like to use a race with them as a PR attempt. Don't care about the exact distance but half or full would be the preference.

To clarify I'm looking for ones outside of Disney.

Well Jeff runs his own half weekend the JG 13.1 in Atlanta. I'm not sure if his pacers do other non-Disney races.

For anyone whose watch has longer than 26.2 - they measure the course as the shortest possible route a person can legally run and still get to 26.2 miles. If you weaved at all, got in a character line, made a bathroom stop, etc., you're above 26.2.
Yes! And ... GPS is not accurate. Per Garmin:

"Certain atmospheric factors and other sources of error can affect the accuracy of GPS receivers. Garmin GPS receivers are accurate to within 15 meters, on average. Newer Garmin GPS receivers with WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) capability can improve accuracy to less than 3 meters on average."

My Garmin 310xt recorded the distance as 26.57, which matches my other 5 Disney Marathons -- every Mickey race had a GPS distance between 26.52 and 26.58. I try hard to run the tangents, but I expect to run an extra tenth of a mile per 10K (based on my GPS watch) in every race I run.

Clif Bar has pace groups too. They used to be the pace group leaders at Disney (they still may be). A word of caution, you have to choose your best interval of run/walk within the Galloway plan through trial and error. I like to let those groups go out in front of me so that I can negative split. There can be a lot of bunching around those pace groups. I like to mix up my length of my Galloway intervals. I one week I do longer intervals and the next week I do shorter intervals, with the plan to do shorter intervals in the race.

There are three different best pace recomendations for my marathon pace:
9:30-10:45 - per mile: 90/30 or 60/20 or 45/15 or 60/30 or 40/20 - See more at: http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/magic-mile/#sthash.CIYq76EB.dpuf

Good luck in your PB quest.

Yeah I know Cliff bar has groups along with others. But I haven't had the best or easiest time keeping up with pacers in just the run groups in the past. And yesterday was by far my best experience. Thus seeking out a Galloway group.

The Space Coast has both Galloway and non-Galloway pace groups for both the half and full. That's the only non-Disney race I've seen them.

Congratulations to all Full participants, finishers and those who had to get a DNF. I'm in awe of all of you, as I am of DW, DSiL and DBiL who all finished the Dopey for the first time this weekend.

That said, I will admit it was hard emotionally walking thru Epcot during the full and again last night seeing all the Marathon medals hung around people's neck when the weather conspired to cancel my 1/2.

If the W&D 1/2, which I ran this past November, had used the same course as the Marathon weekend's 1/2, I wouldn't have minded so much. My one thing was to run up Main Street USA as my wife did 2 years ago with the castle lit, etc. I still haven't been able to do that.

With my knee as bad as it is (doctor said to run no more than 5 miles twice a week unless I want to further damage it), and with us not returning next January this was likely my last shot ..... at least it feels like it. From what I've read, it's not a good idea to run a 1/2 or a full on a replaced knee unless you want to risk needing a replacement for the replacement sooner rather than later.

I'll get over it at some point. Thanks for listening.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussions.

Came to run my first half marathon and ended up doing a full!

The plan was to run the distance of the half and see how I felt. Next thing you know, I just kept going and going. The second half was definitely a struggle and there were many times I wanted to hop on one of those buses but I didn't. Had to walk the area around WWoS cause my legs were so tapped out.
Got my second wind after having some chocolate and a beer in Germany.

Crossing that finish line was amazing!

Definitely enjoyed the runDisney experience and will be back for more! :)

What a weekend! I came to Disney to do the half and was SO bummed that it was cancelled. Was there with a friend who was planning to do the full and when I saw the option to switch to the full I thought NO WAY! But I thought about it all Friday night and Saturday morning and decided that I came to run, so run was what I was going to do. I wanted to just experience the run, complete at least 13.1 and anything past that would just be bonus. I dropped from Corral E to Corral N to be with my friend and decided that I would stick with her as long as I could. I had been planning to run a half marathon pace of around 10:00/mi, but ran the full at around 12:00/mi with my friend. Well I got to 13.1 and just didn't feel done. I didn't want to stop so I kept going, split with my friend at mile 14 when she was needing more walk breaks (I had a plane to catch haha), and kept going. At mile 16 I thought, well how many times have I done 10 miles? I can do this! At about mile 21 I was starting to struggle but at that point I knew I had to make it to the finish. I trudged through the last 5 miles, not stopping to walk because I knew if I stopped I wouldn't start again. I may or may not have cried tears of joy when I crossed the finish line. My time was a full hour longer than the marathon I actually trained for several years ago but I finished it...and bought the I did it shirt! Feeling pretty good today, no different than the marathon I actually trained for. I definitely wouldn't recommend running a marathon you didn't train for, but going into the half I was way better prepared and had done more mileage than I had for any other half I had done and I think that helped. So glad that I was able to get the runDisney experience. Looking forward to Princess 2018!

I live in Ohio and most of my training runs are in weather as bad or worse than yesterday but -Dang! - that was tough! Kept my throwaway hoodie sweatshirt on the entire time!
The gloves were on and off (mostly on) and my knit hat stayed on the entire time.

I couldn't feel my thighs at some points during the run!

I'm amazed by the volunteers and cast members that braved that weather for the full duration...and without much opportunity to move around!

And thanks to the spectators that provided extra candy and food. That's awesome...especially the guy with Tootsie Rolls outside of DHS!

ATQ: I hurt everywhere today and I took a 15 minute ice bath after the race. If anyone has any tips for getting thru today please share. :)

Good advice already. Walk through a park, then try to find a hot tub. Ice for any swelling (arches, achilles, etc). A massage for your legs and back after a couple of days also helps (I usually wait 2-3 days so the massage won't be too painful)
