Marathon Weekend 2017!

Happy Sunday, runDisney All-Stars!

14 weeks to go until the marathon!

This week's SafDQ:

What are you listening to on your runs?

Normally I listen to music but have found that on longer runs sometimes the music becomes too much. So I have started listening to some running podcasts. Mostly I run to either The Ginger Runner or Runner of a Certain Age. Both are very funny and full of great tips and race reports. As I have dipped my toe into ultra races I have found The Ginger Runner to be great! I also recommend his YouTube channel, he does some fantastic race videos.

Me too--add in the Mickey Miles Podcast and you've got me covered. Sometimes I listen to Apple Radio Pop Workout. I learned that they don't play the clean versions of the songs .

Question for those who are experienced. Today I ran in a half-marathon and I was really, really slow. But the last 10 miles, I ran at a faster pace than I started. So, I started off too slow. My problem is that I feel too good now--I'm a little tired, but went shopping, got stuff done, etc. I need to build speed while I get my endurance up. Any suggestion for building speed? I don't want to run 7 hours-or worse, be swept!

I do a tempo run and a VO2 Max workout each week when training for a marathon, but I run 7 days/week. If you are only running 3-4 times/week, you should only have 1 speed run/week, though you can include a few miles in the middle or the end of your long run at race pace. Really depends on what you are doing in training.

I am in the no media group. This weekend I ran the Tennessee Riverwalk during a visit to Chattanooga. Sixteen miles of natural sounds: cars; bikers; runners; "good morning"s; soccer players and tennis players on the field and court nearby; a quick conversation with the UT Chattanooga wrestling team trainers; parents and children talking, walking, and playing at a festival of Hope for Huntington's Disease; and some birds and lots of squirrels. And the aquarium, museums, street art, and view of boats and the river added to it all. I was never at a need for entertainment other than the world! I am on Galloway's Dopey plan, and was supposed to do 15, but what's an extra mile when you are having fun?

Quick question for my rD all stars: thoughts on Coronado Springs? Looking at that for an upgrade, but I wanted to see what people think. Anyone done marathon weekend there?

Just a friendly reminder, final Proof of Time (POT) day is tomorrow October 4th, 2016. Take a few minutes today to check your registration to make sure you have all of the correct information on your registration. Check your event name, event date (including the year), event distance, event time, and link to your results for accuracy. I'd also recommend taking a screen grab in case something odd happens when corral/bib assignment comes out. No guarantees changes will happen at the Expo, but having all your information in order could help you.

My parents stayed there this year. They said it was nice, nothing special but nice.

Good reminder! I checked and everything looks good for me.

I stayed there for half of Marathon weekend last year. I liked it. I was in one of the areas that was pretty far and quite a walk to the main food court area, but there was a bus stop really close that you can catch a bus to the main area. I never had an issue with buses. The runDisney buses stopped at every bus stop. The pool was close, and if I wanted a refill and didn't want to walk all the way to the food court, I could get a refill at the pool bar. I wasn't too impressed with their food court and prefer other resorts' food options, but I'm sure that is just a matter of opinion and food tastes. :)

I haven't stayed there for a race weekend, but I did stay there another time. I honestly think the rooms themselves are the best out of the 3 moderates I have stayed at (Riverside, French Quarter and Coronado). Location of the resort is really good, very close to Epcot. And it's a conference resort, so it's got a few more amenities (Rix Lounge, spa, etc.).

The only downside, for me, is the size of the resort - it is HUGE. There are 4 internal bus stops. That reason alone is why I normally choose French Quarter if I'm staying at a moderate, but Coronado would be my second choice for sure.

Checked and I had ours in there, but noticed on my husband's it said he had run the race on 11/1/1915. HA! I guess I really married an older man. I got it fixed. I'm assuming Disney would have realized it was a mistake since I had the link to the 2015 marathon results, but with runDisney you never know!!

So the next RunDisney trip report you do needs to have a slow-motion video of your husband set to the "Chariots of Fire" theme song...

Thanks for the tip!
When will the corral placements come out?

@Keels would probably know best. She's pretty good at finding these things. Looks like I downloaded the 2016 corrals and waivers on December 8th last year and it was December 9th for the 2015 WDW marathon weekend.

I'll probably start digging around the week after Thanksgiving, but with so many holidays and the overall size of 'Thon Weekend compared to others, that info definitely seems to come out much earlier than other race weekends. I want to say the Runner Tracking link started being populated with races on Dec. 4 last year for this year's race weekend, and the RD released everything the following Tuesday. They like Tuesdays and Fridays for info like this. #HackerKeelz

@Ariel484 has covered it pretty well. I will add that I find it to be the most scenic and attractive of the moderates (and the best food court, IMO). Also, while staying there with my wife and mother for F&G one year I ended up being the "drink runner". We were in one of the furthest buildings from the food court and I GPSed the distance as 3/4-mile one way. That's why I lean towards the smaller resorts like POFQ for a race weekend.

I'm new to the RunDisney world, or any race for that matter, so we'll find out what corral we are in before the expo?

In some cases, yes. If you're running the Half, Full, Goofy or Dopey - RunDisney releases corrals that have numbers that correspond with bib numbers so you can see where you're at.

For the 5K/10K, they do NOT release corrals in advance for those - you find those out at the Expo - though a cursory Google Image search (and asking around here!) will give you an idea where you might be compared to last previous years.
