Marathon Weekend 2016

FUN! Depending on your goals for each race, maybe we can dominate Corral C together!

To all, once the bibs/corrals officially come out I'd be willing to put together a comprehensive Dis'ers corral and timing listing for spectators if people would find benefit in that.

At the moment, due to some IT band issues, I'm hoping just to finish the races. I'm pretty bummed as I've been training since March for various half/Dopey and had no problems, but the last two weeks have not been great. Taking a break from all running this week and maybe the week after so I will be undertrained (longest run was 17 miles although this was fine) but hopefully injury free! After your HM pb you must be feeling pretty good for the weekend - out of curiosity whats your plans for the races?

Your second point sounds great though - me and my fam are completely new to this and have no idea how to go about spectating although I have bought my mam gold chear squad so she will probs just stick to Epcot/MK

I often don't set goals for races these days to remove pressure from myself and my OCD tendencies. I was typically too worried about each mile split and slowing down/speeding up and I think it wore me out mentally. Now, I try to run each race by perceived effort. My overall goal is to finish the Dopey in under 7 hours and I think I can achieve that with the following...

5K - 23:00
10K - 47:00
Half - 1:50:00
Full - 4:00:00

When each race comes I don't worry about what I've done or have coming up but rather let my body decide what it wants to do that day. It's worked for the last 5.5 months for me (not setting goals and running by effort) and worked the last two Dopeys.

I'm wondering if there is a discrepancy between last years corrals (and time required) and this year's bib #s (using the old corrals) because a number of people forgot to go back and add a POT when the link appeared a few weeks after registration. It will be interesting to see the size of the last corral vs the previous two years.

I gave an estimated time of 4:30 but my POT gave me a 4:10 estimated finish. I'm in corral F. My husband's POT was 3:52 and he is in corral D.

With bib placement we would be in J based on last years! Better bib #s than I expected though considering the time requirements in last years corrals. We'll see! How does it work with challenges? They have separate corral placement? How many people end up being in the corrals typically? Looking at last year it was low and then I realized that didn't include challengers lol Less than W&D per corral or about the same?

Haha, exactly! I went and looked at last year's results and the 82nd finisher came in at 3:02. I'd need some major pixie dust to pull that off.

I didn't even think to look at that, so of course I had to and found #399 last year ran 3:16:52. I was given a projected 3:25 time. Something very interesting is going on this year it appears. Either a lot of people forgot to submit a proof of time, or the race they submitted could not be verified. The other answer would be fewer "fast" runners this year, or a combination of both. Its going to be a long few weeks waiting for the remaining information from Disney.

Any thoughts on this case? My friend who is a Boston Qualifier was given a Dopey number of 26206. She had submitted POT with link for a 1:48:17 half marathon. I submitted POT for a 2:11:53 half and was given number 22372. As a side note, she was 3rd in her age group in the 10k at Tinkerbell weekend in May. She obviously is not in the right corral. Should she contact runDisney? Or is she out of luck?

If she has a screengrab of her PoT submission, I would encourage her to send that to RunDisney AND print it out to bring to Runner Relations.

Other than that, she needs to prepare herself to spend quite a bit of time at Runner Relations at the Expo with all the paper trail she's got (that screen grab, results from recent races to prove that time, etc.), and be ready to beg and plead her case until no more people will listen to her.

There have been people recently who have had success (most recently at W&D - there were a LOT of corral changes at W&D ... not that it ultimately mattered), but you've got to come armed with all the supporting evidence you can and be willing to keep talking to people until you get moved up.

I am vacillating in between - I can't wait for the weekend to get here already! and OMG how am I going to run all those miles!

With last year's corrals, I am in I for the half.

Question - has anyone volunteered before? I am traveling with a friend who is volunteering for the half. She just got her volunteer paperwork that says transportation is not provided. We are staying at Poly and she is volunteering at the 6.2 mile water stop in MK. I am supposed to be volunteering for the 5K but haven't gotten anything yet.

I think there are quite a few Dopey and Goofy folks that have 20000 and 30000 bib numbers, so there could be faster folks that are in those groups.

So I'll be running my first ever half-marathon and just looked up my bib number (48290), which would put me in corral N for the half if things go as they have been said so far on here. When registering for the half I had no idea when I would finish, but now after training it looks like I'm going to finish in around 1:50-2:00 hours. It seems like people don't like being that far back corral wise. Are there any disadvantages to being in a later corral? I'm getting nervous now.

@LSUlakes and I are going to be enemies this bowl season! Which is crazy, because while Tech is my favorite team - LSU is probably my favorite non-Texas/Big 12 team.

In other news ...

Had my first legitimate race-related "cry" today - but that's good. It's put me in a good space because I work through all the crazy emotions that this damn race weekend brings up for a first timer.

It's just a weird day all around - a year ago today, I was stuck in the middle of a 15-day work trip in Las Vegas (I promise you, it's not as fun as it sounds), and I was just starting this running journey. I'd told my two girlfriends my ridiculous goal of running the Disneyland Half in 2015 - one thought I was thinking too big and needed to keep to smaller distance races closer to home, "so I can come support you!" (spoiler alert: she never did), and the other - Dr. S - thought that the goal I had in mind was a good starting point, but should be bigger.

And here I am. My husband just finished hanging my first medal holder on a prominent wall (NOT the wall I picked for it, BTW) in our house, and I'm a little bit beside myself.

I've come a long way, and I know each of you have as well - in conquering fears and starting a running journey to reaching levels of performance that only the elite few on this planet can do.

I just want everyone here to know that I'm proud of you - of every single step you've taken up until this point, and I can't wait to run with you, cheer you along or even support you if you need it.

And I also want to thank each of you (even those of you not running Marathon weekend!) - because it's y'all that have turned my "silly" dream into an obsession. My bank account, however, has other views about this. :D

Let's do this.

I love when people realize how much they can accomplish. These stories fire me up just as much as anything out there. LOVE IT!

You rock, girl! :thanks:

I've said this once before, and I'll say it again and again: this is one of the most supportive, best group of people I have ever bumped into.

I am so glad I have found you all. And, as @Keels just pointed up: I can't wait to run with you and fill you Full Marathon with my special Pixie Dust! :tink:

My first solo trip to the World starts in 28 days. And I couldn't be happier to know that, even though I'm going by myself, I will not be alone at all - runners are never alone. :)

Thanks everyone!

I have been solo many times. It is awesome. But, if you want to join me on any of my ADR's, or if you are in a corral near me and want someone to run with, you PM and let me know. I totally get the solo thing but if you want company I am game as well.

I offered to help Keels the other day but she won't need me. She's gonna kill it!

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I will carry a few gels with me on my long run on Thursday (or Clif Shot Blocks if I can swing by some place to find them). As luck would have it, I run on a mixed use trail with plentiful access to water fountains, rest rooms and emergency bail out spots so I don't even need to carry my own water. I have learned from my experience on the bike -- as long as I take in a few calories every hour or so, I'm fine, and my stomach's not too picky about what. I expect this will carry over to running but I will experiment nonetheless.

Interesting -- I am wondering still how I was seeded at the back of the back. I am wondering if I somehow neglected to enter a Proof of Time or if I entered it incorrectly. I registered months ago so I don't remember. My POT would have been a 2014 Ten Miler that I completed in 1:46 -- not Corral A-worthy, but I think I would be ahead of the 16-minute milers, right?

Liz

You weren't far behind me for ToT and I am projected to be in F. BUT, and this is a big BUT, the person I mentioned yesterday that had a number of over 14000 for the marathon, emailed runDisney. They told him nothing is final on numbers yet and they REAL numbers and corrals will be announced 12/14. So, I wouldn't worry until after that.

Disadvantages to later corrals are that you start later and the later corrals usually have more people in them. If you aren't in danger of being swept pace-wise, there aren't any other major disadvantages.

I have every reason in the world to panic right now. My training has sucked. I can't get in my training now consistently. I was going to run tomorrow before work and now I can't because 2 of my kids will be home sick, unless a miracle happens overnight. This will have me running tomorrow night. I didn't get to run tonight because I had to go get them medicine.

I am feeling like I am really in trouble. At this point I just want to finish, which I will, but not in the way I wanted to. It is stressing me out big time. I really wanted to finish this race and be able to enjoy the parks but I just don't see it happening at this point. I will be sore and knocked out. All it does is remind me just how hard these races are, even the fun ones.

At a race this large with corral starting times staggered very closely together, it is mainly congestion that people are worried about coming from a later corral. Also, being a Disney race there are picture/character stop considerations; the lines are going to be long for pretty much everyone but it's a guarantee for the later corrals. The Half also features more walkers than most events both because of the receptive nature of the race and the large volume of challenge racers (Dopey and Goofy) who tend to conserve energy during the half. This can make narrow portions of the course more difficult to navigate. I think the excitement over corrals is largely due to feelings of personal achievement rather than fear of starting a little later.
