Marathon Weekend 2016

Ran my 18 miler - paid for not sleeping last night. That was a horrible run, and I may sleep the rest of the day. :faint:

Random question for those who seem to have more training experience than I do. I am registered for a 39.3 (3 HM over 5 weeks) starting April 9. With the marathon on Jan 10, I don't really know what kind of training plan to put in place for those two months. For the past two years, I never kept up the mileage in the winter months, so training was always pretty much starting from scratch, but this year it's different. I'm thinking focus should be on improving pace with the hopes of smashing an sub-2 PR (I am current sub-2.....by 45 seconds :-) ). Any suggestions?

Couple questions before I could make any suggestions...

How many marathons have you completed?
How many half-marathons have you completed?
How do you plan on approaching the 3 individual half-marathons (i.e. trying to PR the first and then just finish in whatever for the other two, trying to PR them all, etc.)?
What kind of training are you currently doing (days per week, mileage, paces, etc.)?
What kind of training are you willing to do (days per week, mileage, speed, tempo, endurance building, etc.)?
In your last sub-2 PR what was the limiting factor in your ability to do it faster (leg fatigue, breathing, etc.)?

Yaaasss! Found my spot (thanks @DopeyBadger :wave2:).

I'll be waiting my fellow Disers with my "Hi five Pixie Heart for Pixie Dust!" Sign around there!

Mark me down for being at Mile 16.5 around 8:00-8:10am! Lol! See you then!

The bonus about that spot. If you stand in the middle of the intersection you get to see everyone TWICE! Once at 16.5 miles entering ESPN and second at 20.5 miles when exiting ESPN. Just remember to wear shoes you don't mind getting wet if it rained recently because of the grass.

I understand the feeling, wish my pain this morning for my 14 miler could have been for a postivie reason! I was up late at a watch party of the MSU-Nebraska game. Actually it has been a bummer of a football weekend with both the Spartans and then the Saints losing in the last minutes of both games/OT. Grrr! At least I can check off my 10 miler and 14 milers this weekend.

Neoflynn she posted in the W&D thread. :)
i just briefly glanced at that thread lastnight to see what the chatter was, but I missed her post, I did catch her Instagram of her medals today though...

for some unknown reason I seem to run well on very little sleep I actually do worse if I sleep to much, could be my life long battle with insomnia that I'm just used to doing things on minimal sleep

I'm here! W&D was an experience, to say the least ...

cant wait to here your thoughts about the whole thing

would now be a bad time to mention I'm a diehard Husker fan?
that game was crazy but I think we deserved to finally have one break in our favor we have been so unlucky this year feel bad it happened against Sparty though as they are probably one of the few big ten teams I don't have a problem with LOL

When I am not training I sleep much less, but when training I sleep 8 hours/night. My body becomes accustomed to it. And since I ran 9 miles on Saturday and ten spent the entire day at MetLife Stadium, my body really needed the sleep for recovery before mt 18 miler on Sunday. But, alas, CBS decided to have the Alabama/LSU game kick off at 8:20.

At least we won. If Alabama had lost I probably would not have slept at all. :upsidedow

Yes, we deserved the break for once. Finally a happy week for Huskers.

Oh but what a game it was, and us Nebraskans can finally have a happy week in all our football drama. I kept checking the wine and dine delay stuff during the game too and it was as intense as the game. Glad you got your runs in though despite the football losses for you.

I'm gonna Google Maps the shiznit out of it tonight! I have no idea what I even want to buy at the Expo/Disney store yet, but I figure whatever it is I better be the first at the rack. Actually I know I want some Dopey stuff and I hear that goes fast.

Thx. Mapping Time Tonight!!! I'm gonna be more prepared for the expo then the marathon. :crazy2:

Basically walk down the driveway of POP, turn left, walk straight. You'll end up at WWoS without even trying.

Wow I've a lot of catching up to do on the posts here!

I was wondering if anyone has experience this, I've been getting a cramp like HORRIBLE pain in my middle toe on my right foot, so painful I can't walk on it and it feels numb and tingly like pins and needles. I got it a few times sporadically before our marathon. Since the marathon I've had a bit of a running break, I've heard this happens sometimes after a big milestone like that but I just didn't have the motivation to run anyway... I was out on Saturday and got a sharp pulling feeling in the muscle behind my knee on my right leg (on the side of my IT band but more towards the back) so I cut my run short. Knee felt uncomfortable for the rest of the day but that evening I got the HORRIBLE toe pain (conveniently at the airport when I had to walk SUPER far to the gate and had the most amazing toasted cheese sandwich in my hand to eat at the gate and the SMELL drove me crazy for the whole painful walk) and I could barely walk on it, putting any weight on it was so painful. It went away after about 30mins and I got the odd tingle the next day but now it's back to normal. Partner seems to think it could be a trapped nerve? I've got physio Wednesday but curious to see if anyone else experienced something similar...

Sorry for rambling!

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I did the Battleship half on Sunday. It was 85 and sunny on the beach in NC on Saturday which was really nice considering it was pouring rain at home 2 hours east. Getting one more beach day in for the year was quite a pleasant surprise. I went into the half with a goal of PR'ing but the course was a lot hillier than I expected. About mile 2 I adjusted my goal to do the race as a marathon training tempo run and enjoyed the rest of the race. The course was a little odd in that there were a couple miles of it that were on surface streets that were still open for traffic.

If I were you and the goals are: Finish the full and PR one of the Halfs I would do my normal training for the full in January making sure that you do at least 1 workout a week as a speedworkout. After the full in January I might take a week or two off. I'd probably do some easy runs during those two weeks, but nothing too hard. Starting the week of January 25th I'd start training again. You could use whatever plan you were using for the marathon just cut your long runs shorter. You probably don't need to go much over 10 on your long runs for half training. For the halfs I would look at the course profiles. I would pick the flatest course and choose that as my "race" race and I would treat the others as training runs. If all 3 all flat. I might try and race the first one that way if you miss your PR you have the 3rd one for another chance to PR.

Congrats on the W. Bama's d-line made our o-line look like a pro team v/s a 6th grade team.

Thanks - I was really surprised at our success given the strength of your o-line. It was our best game of the year, with no close second. My concern is that we peaked in that game and will over-look MSU this weekend.

So I went in last night and made my FP+ reservations and was able to get Space Mountain the whole time I'm there. I guess its no longer going to be down for refurb as previously thought? Splash Mountain will be part of the time we are there but at least we'll get it for a couple of days.

This may have already been discussed, but I was thinking about it yesterday after reading a few running trip reports - hi @Ariel484 totally stalking your reports :)

What is everyone's character picture strategy during their race(s)? And what has worked for those who are race veterans (or not worked.) Any tips or regrets or anything to help a newbie out?
I was thinking maybe I would want to at the very least stop for one picture even if the lines are long...More if the lines are ok. And then try to take some selfies and absolutely want the picture near the golf-ball in Epcot. We are going to Chef Mickey's with the whole family after the race so I know I'm going to get pics with my medal with the fab 4 or 5. I'd regret not doing at least one pic since that's half the fun right, but I fear that in the moment I will give up on the lines.
BTW I'm doing only the 5k this year.

I'm not so sure about the 5k.. I think like I said I'd definitely like to stop for at least one character especially if it's rare!
10k - Same as 5k, I have no set plan but will stop if anything really takes my fancy!
Half Marathon- ALL THE STOPPING! I plan to get in all the character stops that I really want to do on the half course so that when I come to do the marathon the next day I can run by all the stops I've already been to!
Marathon - Skip stops from the half route but hit all the major stops on the rest of the course. We'll be trying to run with our walk breaks at the water stops.
