Marathon Weekend 2016

I ran to a Christmas album earlier this week - didn't work for me. Not cold enough yet.
Living in Wisconsin I'm expecting it to be cold enough for snow already. Weather is calling for mid to upper 60s this week which is something I don't really remember happening in November.

I remember back in the day when the Christmas music didn't start until after Thanksgiving.
Man, I feel so old...
For me it always starts before that but probably not at least a week or so year. One year one of the local radio stations switched to 24-7 Christmas music November 1st. They haven't done that since.

Yeah, I ran in shorts and a tank today. Hard to believe as I ran in 35 degree weather yesterday. Crazy.

Ok, lets see...

W&D I will be running like my last 2 halves. I have joked that now its a training run for the full, since I've signed up for that, but it's still the run I had planned. I cant think of anything specific I would do different to make it one or the other.

I usually do 2, 5 mile runs during the week and a longer run on the weekend. Yesterday I did 10.2, last week 13.1, and obviously next week 13.1 too.

Basically I would like to finish in good enough shape to enjoy the cruise after, but if I could break 6 hours Id be thrilled. At this point I expect I will run at least the first half and then some, then do a lot of walking for the 2nd half. But again, I'm not really sure until I actually try this out. I know I can do 1/2 in 2:10. I actually did it in 2:03 last week but that's without crowds, bathroom break, pictures, etc...

Just the marathon then Castaway Cay 5K

I usually run Tues, Thurs then either Sat or Sun. Other days I do the elliptical.

Week days I do 5 in under 50 minutes, then weekends I should have more time to spend out on longer runs. Im thinking 4, 5, 6 hours blocks at a time may be tough, but knowing its only 8 weekends I'm going to have to find the time.

I have a pedometer on my phone that gives me my minutes per mile pace.

So far, never doing more than 13.1 I run for the most part, but will throw in a little walking. For example last week during my 13.1 I walked maybe 1/2 mile at about mile 9 while I had a gel shot. I do expect more walking for the full though.

Sorry a few more questions...

-If you treated your W&D like a race then I would expect something similar to what you've done (2:03-2:10), whereas if it's a training run more like (2:16, 10:29 min/mile pace). If you treat it like a race, then you'd need slightly more recovery time, whereas if you treat it like a training run you would need less adjustments.
-A finishing time of 2:03 for a half would predict a 4:18 marathon when fully trained. So, a 6 hour marathon is definitely achievable. Other than the bathroom breaks and pictures, I would avoid running at a 6hr pace unless you train at those paces because you are much faster than that.
-So I gather you are more worried about going the distance than accomplishing a pace close to your fitness level.
-Would you be adverse to doing any double weekends (running Saturday and Sunday)?
-Would you be willing to stretch your Tuesday and Thursday runs to 60-90 minutes or would you prefer they stay around 50 minutes max?
-When you stopped to take a break in your last 13.1 (at mile 9) was it solely because of the gel shot or because you were out of breath/legs were tired and needed a break?
-What type of gel do you use?
-Can you please use this calculator to predict your VO2max (this will help me figure out what kind of carb plan you should be practicing):
http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/vo2max-calculator.aspx
-If I told you that if you were to forego the elliptical the next 8 weeks for a few extra weekday runs you would be less tired after the marathon would you be interested?

I listen to Christmas music year round, put in IHeartAuto and tune to Christmas 365,especially after a hard day at work the Christmas music soothes me.I guess it would be funny to someone to see me listening to Mannheim Steamroller Carol of the Bells in the middle of July in South Florida with 93 degrees outside.I don't listen to it constantly but definitely randomly at times throughout the year.

Does it count that I already have Holiday Wishes and Parade soundtracks in my Disney music run list::yes:::rotfl2:

I'm also working to make the timing work so my last three big runs (19, 20, 21) will be here in Florida so I can be prepared for the weather.

Good luck with that, if by preparing for the weather you mean preparing for anything from 30 to 80 degrees. At least up here in Boston I know it's going to be cold in January.

Mileage: 190, including marathon taper and recovery
Time: 26:17
Pace: Math

Started November with a race consisting of three 0.7 mile loops, with a beer at the beginning of each loop. Finish time was something like 17:00. Not really sure. That was ... interesting.

I'd keep out of it. If this gets back to your co-worker then you are screwed and you have to work with them. Just leave it alone and forget about her.

@Waiting2goback I agree with Z-Knight. It's sad, but it isn't worth the repercussion to you. Hopefully the other person can decide what's best for them on race day. I'd also recommend editing your post to blank in the event this circles back to this thread.

Thanks guys. I won't send the PM. I know my coworker reads my posts. I'm hoping when they see the post they will realize some people take this seriously and have the decency not to ruin someone's race. I'm not deleting the post though. I did nothing wrong and there have been issues with this person at work anyway. And bringing this up at work would mean admitting to reading my posts and confirming that problems are extending outside of work.

Also, the person that offered to run with them is on this thread so I'm hoping they will put 2+2 together and stay away.

I was enjoying the talking into Dopey, but don't do this one @Keels. I would not want to do one even if Disney put on on.

Could you see the advertising for the Disney Ultra. Run TWICE thru 4 parks, 2 water parks, ESPN, Disney Springs. The runners start will begin at the MK with rope drop. The finish will also be on Main Street as the kiss goodnight is playing. That better be 1 heck of a finishers medal :lmao::lmao:

I would sign up for this!!!

No mileage for me for October. I didn't track it because I started back slow after the doctor. I will track for November and December.

Training check! How did everyone's October go? Can you believe we are only 2 months away?!?!

Had fewer this month than I would like with Dopey in mind, but had two weeks of tapering for the Detroit Marathon and then took several days off afterwards, blah blah blah!

Finished the month with 125 miles. But recovered from the marathon and ready to jump into my Dopey training. Hard to beleive it is only two months!

I love the beer mile. I am truly amazed by the guys who do it in under five minutes.

Random Thought of the Day: I'm watching the NYC Marathon replay and I was thinking that isn't it stupid, and I mean super stupid, to have camera crews and police traveling along side (or even worse, in front) of runners on motorcycles belching fumes in their faces!!! I see this in the Tour de France (cycling), and other similar races and it always strikes me as super stupid. Especially for runner, why can't you use electric bikes or something - I bet you if they did then these runners would break the 2:00 hr mark.

What's so interesting to me is that with all the research that's been done recently, it actually looks like race performance for almost everyone is more predictable then I would have guessed
I hope you meet and exceed your goals! Your results are most impressive.

I'm all for eliminating variables but you will have a tough time changing my mind that all things being equal, some days are just better than others.

Not to mention weather, crowding, hills, etc. And don't even get me started on race ruining porta-pot stops (I missed my BQ by less than 2 minutes ).

Throw in the mental aspect that being able to run at your max potential is HARD, HARD, HARD, and I'm less predictable than a texting teenager driving a carload of cats!

Same here in Nebraska, we had some chilly days last week, but got in the 70s yesterday and will be 70s thru Thursday. So weird. Last year we were in cold weather in October already and many years already have had snow. I'll take these 70s though any day over freezing

I really am going to have to try an ultra some day.

We have a couple local ultra. My goal is to sign up for my first 100 miler in 2017. The one I want to do usually sells out immediately every year. I have to volunteer at this race in 2016 in the hopes of getting the ability to register in 2017.

October:
Mileage - 150 miles
Time - 23 hours 15 minutes
Avg Pace - 9:20 min/mile

166.7 miles for october. Set my road and trail marathon PR's last month, but the recovery time periods actually pushed my milage down a bit

Obviously it didn't bother the lead pack too much over the length of the course since most of them dropped into the low 4:00/mile for the last four miles of the race.

Also, they do the same thing at the Olympics in countries with worse emissions standard than the US and I've never heard an athlete (cycling or running) complain about those conditions.
