Marathon Weekend 2016

You're probably closer to being ready for an ultra than you think you are. I ran my first 50-mile race only a few months after my first marathon. Marathon training is a good base for moving up in distance. The weekday runs aren't too much different. It's the back to back long runs that really get you ready for the extra distance.

I see what you're trying to do ...

You guys are too funny!

Just got back from a 1 1/2 hour stretching class... Holy cow!! Amazed at what a workout it was, but also how out of balance I am, how much tighter one side is than the other.
Will definitely be adding this class to my regimen.

For you with AP's, do they get linked to your magic band? But you still need the card in hand for any discounts or benefits right?

Yes, they are in MDE so linked to any magic bands also linked to your MDE account. I only use the card for free parking - never used it for discounts, so can't answer that part - but the card is needed for the free parking.

Okay, random question out here: where can I see a picture of these Balloon Ladies?! At the moment they're on the same lines as little green me, Bigfoot, and the lochness monster! I was talking to my extended family about the race weekend and the question was ask what they looked like and I couldn't tell them!

Found this blog with a picture of them near the end of it.

Yeah. The only thing your MB contains related to your AP is admission media, FP+s and ADRs. You'll need your hard card for parking and in-park discounts. I leave mine in my SUV unless I'm planning on making a purchase.

I wish APs could have charging permissions just like hotel guests, but that's a request for a completely different board!

Therein lies the issue, right?! One never exactly knows when the purchase bug will hit!
;)

Thanks all!

So true. Luckily, I'm pretty basic when it comes to my purchases. AND I go enough where I can make a list and make one BIG purchase with things for all the people I'm shopping for before the end of my visit.

The Shop Disney Parks App is a REAL helper. I was seeking out a certain pair of ears I saw someone wear in the Parks, and I was able to track down exactly what ears they were AND the App showed me what Parks had them in stock (as well as Downtown Disney).

I have a TiW membership as well, and the crap thing about that is it doesn't even show up on my AP holder profile. I wish it was something you could specify when you make ADRs.

Quick question about Run Disney's deferral policy. Are deferrals handled on a race by race basis or are they event based? I'm currently signed up for the 10k, half and full individually (no Goofy/Dopey). My hamstring is not responding well to treatment and while I'm still optimistic about being able to complete the 10k & half, I think the marathon may be too much to hope for at this point.

Can I defer just the marathon and keep the other two races or will I need to defer all or nothing?

I have a question and need your opinions. I HATE that I even need to do this because I don't like getting involved in petty crap but I would hate to see someone's race ruined all the same, so I am torn.

I have a co-worker who got into running this year. I won't get into ALL the details because they don't matter. But she is running a Disney race soon. I helped her run a race in June. The BAA 10K. She asked me to help her because it was her first race and she was afraid she wouldn't finish. I said yes. Most runners would do the same thing, right?

During this race I found out she hadn't trained for it. So, I was a bit upset. It was my first race of the year and I was dying to air it out. But, she said she saw this as an eye opener and would start training seriously, as she had this Disney race coming in the fall and it was a 1/2 marathon.

She didn't train all summer either. She ran a 10K in Plymouth the same day I ran my POT race. We were supposed to meet at the finishline. She didn't show up, claiming she was pulled from the course by EMT's. I don't think she ever showed for the race at all.

So my problem is this. She is now on that race forums and someone has offered to run her race with her. That person is potentially going to throw her race away to "help" my co-worker when my co-worker hasn't trained. I know the person who made the offer was trying to be supportive, as I was when I helped, but I don't want her to throw her race away like I did back in June.

The question is, do I send this person a PM and tell them not to run the race with her (because these races are expensive and she has probably actually done the training), or do I just let her offer to help and mind my business? I am not trying to embarrass my co-worker or "humiliate" her. I am just picturing how upset I was to give up a race to help someone only to learn she didn't train. I would hate to see one of you do the same thing, especially for a Disney race because these are such special experiences.

So fire away with opinions please.

P.S.= I only learned about this because I went to that thread to wish people good luck on the upcoming race. My co-worker had never posted there before so I wasn't expecting to see any posts.

Well, because of someone's compulsive race registration problem :rolleyes1...
I will be going more too! Lol! So perhaps I will get more organized and pre plan purchases better too. Like the app you mentioned, going to check that out too.

So the TiW becomes another card you have to carry to reap the benefits too? As you've said, with as much linking of data, ticketing etc that Disney already does, it seems that it shouldn't difficult to link things like TiW, AP, or DVC discounts..... Unless they're hoping people don't take advantage of them because they don't have the card on them???

-Morning before marathon, warm-up for 5 minutes. Run 150 seconds at 130% VO2max (4:30 minute mile for me), followed by 30 seconds at all out speed. This sounds INTENSE!
So, 4:30 mpm for 150 seconds is NOT all out speed??? Yikes.

I have to say I really admire all the thought that a bunch of you put into this. I had a little league coach tell me one time "Mike, you're left handed. Don't think, just hit the ball." I guess I've taken the same approach running. Maybe I should complicate things up a bit. Or maybe I'm too lazy for all that.

Unrelated, I do love ultras for the aid stations. Some of them are like Chef Mickey's without the Mickey. Nothing like pierogies and quesadillas from a camp stove in the middle of the woods about 30 miles in.
(Of course, it's tough to figure the number of grams of maltose and complex carbs consumed and the subsequent changes in my VO2max.)

Here in Milwaukee we are having our first ever Running Festival. Tomorrow is the full Milwaukee Marathon. I am volunteering as part of a high school group to help with traffic. This is the first ever full marathon completely within the city of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee?? The home of Beer and Brats is having people RUN??!?! Now I've seen everything.

Well we do host the what we call the Lakefront Marathon which what a lot of people use to qualify for other major events but that goes through other cities. This will be the first completely within the city. I'm sure many will be enjoying beer and brats after the race.

Same conclusion I came to after finding out the pace necessary to meet their recommendations. Given the 3 minute time frame and 4:30 min/mile pace, this means I'd have to run 0.66 miles in 3 minutes. I just don't see me being able to do that at this point in my fitness. That's why the follow up research article by the same group seeming to conclude that the intense workout isn't necessary to get the same super compensation interests me.

For me, my goal is to BQ and break 3:00 in the marathon. As a scientist, I always ask why and try to understand. I wanted to figure out what was necessary for me to reach my goal. What's so interesting to me is that with all the research that's been done recently, it actually looks like race performance for almost everyone is more predictable then I would have guessed. So I evaluated my running strengths and weaknesses and read as much as possible as to how to emphasize my strength and minimize my weakness. If anyone is interested in a good scientific review book check out "The Science of Running". It is extremely dense, but helps you figure out how to make customs plans or how to manipulate plans you can find online based on your strengths and weaknesses.

I see what you're trying to do ...

I was enjoying the talking into Dopey, but don't do this one @Keels. I would not want to do one even if Disney put on on.

Could you see the advertising for the Disney Ultra. Run TWICE thru 4 parks, 2 water parks, ESPN, Disney Springs. The runners start will begin at the MK with rope drop. The finish will also be on Main Street as the kiss goodnight is playing. That better be 1 heck of a finishers medal :lmao::lmao:
