Marathon Weekend 2016

Tattoo that's a great idea. I'm not sure where I would get one at though. I once saw one on a ultra runner. One calf had "trample the weak . . . ."
Hah, if I ever worked up to an Ultra, I would think about that one.

Finally dinner reservations made room booked. How's everyone's training going. 10 miles today not fun it got hot and humid quick this morning. Got to love Florida. It's going to get here before we know and we will all question our sanity and what made us think it was a good idea.
Four miles at noon today; may or may not be equivalent to Florida morning heat and humidity, but enough so that I must run earlier.

And I think that's the lesson we all need to learn here - its easy to feel bad about yourself for not taking on as much as someone else, but you really need to remember that whatever you're doing is a huge accomplishment, even if others may (intentionally or otherwise) not acknowledge it.

It's all a learning experience for me. I have learned so much about myself in the last 15 months. Running helps me with my biggest weakness, my self-esteem. I feel like a slacker for not doing Goofy or Dopey. Why, I know I could do it if I wanted. I had the chance to run Goofy and I decided to do the marathon to be able to enjoy my WHOLE weekend at WDW and not just the races.

I still get nervous/scared before any race, no matter the distance.

My first marathon was a learning experience. It was HARD. I thought about quitting at mile 18 because I cramped in both hamstrings. But I decided there was no way I was quitting. It took me 5:01 but I finished and it was one of the best things I have ever done. People can get this sense of accomplishment from any distance because everyone's goals are different.

If the announcers say anything about "only" or "just" doing the marathon I will say to myself, "If it's that easy why don't you come do it with us." No marathon is easy, I don't care who you are.

on the topic of treating yo self post race, I may in fact be crazy as I am considering getting something like this
mickmarathon.gif

with 26.2 underneath as my first tattoo after I complete it.....:eek::eek:

I like this idea. I also thought about having 26.2 on my left calf and in the future, when I do Dopey, having 48.6 on the right one. But, I will also be treating myself to some new goodies at the expo and I am considering a massage, possibly when I get home so I don't have to waste any park time.

Oh, and I have 11 miles scheduled for tomorrow. My daughter is sick so it will depend on if she sleeps through the night or not. But it is hot and humid here too so it should be fun. But, I have a goal for my POT race in September so I need to bust my butt for the next 2 months.

The heat is brutal right now. It's warm at 5:00 AM and when the sun comes out it kills me. I sweated so much from Saturday's run I had to wring out my socks. It was like I jumped in a pool with all my running clothes on. I drank at least 8 cups of water during the run and powerade after. Cramped for a few hours post run.
Other than that, the base miles are going well. I had plans for a 15 miler later this month that I think will either be reduced or ran on a TM. How's your training going?

Was a rest day today but I got in 14 yesterday. Dealing with a sore achilles right now so that was a bit of a reach but it was such a beautiful day and was a great run I ended up pushing a planned 10 to 14. So I am resting, icing and stretching today to be safe and the milage next week is lower. Such a pain! Take care of your achilles!

I was up yesterday morning at 4:45am to make ADR's (got everything I wanted...including BOG for dinner!) and then went out for a hot humid 14 miler. @LSUlakes I know exactly what you mean by everything being soaked. I definitely had the squishey's in my feet the last 4 miles! Overall, training is going well and finally getting used to the heat.

I did a brutal 2.5 miles yesterday ... so glad I decided to do a short run. It was a little hot, but not really humid - 80 degrees, humidity around 50% - but the park where I run has NO shade, so the sun was beating right down on me ... I gotta find a new place to run in the summer!

I always teach this lesson to my dance students (even though it's still hard to practice even as the teacher):
You can spend your life being intimidated by people who seem better than you and the result is you not living up to your potential. Or you can see these intimidating people, then stick around them, let them inspire you, learn from them, and then use that to exceed your own potential.

Easier said than done. This year I'm letting my dance mantra extend into trying running. I'm a 5k runner in a marathon weekend thread because I want to be like you super runners one day! (And yes I'm totally guilty of falling into the "just a 5k" habit, but I'm getting better at not feeling that way)

This rings so true for me right now. Our group is 4 of us and I am the slowest one (also the oldest, but they act like that doesn't matter) and I find myself trying to be competitive with them and I'm just not. And it really gets me down and makes me doubt I can do it all creep in. I haven't really had this issue while training for the 10k, but also, I did not train that much for the 10k if I'm being honest. With my first half coming up (55 days to the DLH!), the doubt and quitting nature is really coming in...

Off current topic, but still on topic...I saw the pic of the fellow with the No Way Jose ice cream after his race. Does anyone else have a go to reward or a reward in mind for finishing your race. You know, other than the disney medal they give you?

I'm kinda thinking id like to finally do the pick a pearl at Epcot and make a ring. I've never done it because I can be weirdly frugal about souvenirs.
Also thinking about grabbing a bottle of wine for our villa fridge for that night :)

I like to do breakfasts after the Disney races, but I think I'm going to be too slow at a half marathon to do it, unless I go directly after the race. Bummed. I wanted some Tonga Toast too.

My body is finally starting to really loosen up on these hot runs. I run about one minute per mile slower than in the winter, but for a while it was even slower than that.

It seems that I have Plantar fasciitis in my left foot. I had it about 8 years ago in the other foot, so I recognize the symptoms all too well. Been struggling with it for about 5 weeks now - guess that this pain will be with me until I am ready to take another training break, and that won't be until after the marathon in January. Pain exists only in the mind - or so I keep telling myself.

Not sure why but all of sudden Saturday 1/9 had a bunch of normal time BOG dinner reservations showing available on MDE. I cancelled my 4:25pm and took a 5:15pm for 5 people. (actually 1/6 through 1/8 has a ton more available BOG dinners all of a sudden!)

If anyone was stalking that for a pre-race or post-race dinner....go go go to the dining site.

In addition to that, I think want to release my Akershus 1/8 8am breakfast. I booked it in case I could not get CRT and I got CRT. Anyone want that for post 10k? I'd rather release it to someone on this board than the main board. Hopefully I'm not going against board rules. Disregard if I am.

Somewhat related to the running weekend question. Has anyone made a reservation at Mama Melrose's during the running weekend? Any idea why it is not shown as available at this time? Thanks!

I saw a thread that they have not released even December or January for Mama Melrose. Something to do with them not releasing a few HS restaraunts right at 180 for unknown reasons. (fantasmic package changes??, construction???) But they just released Hollywood and Vine not too long ago after a lot of waiting for some. You may have to just stalk it. One of the reasons I just went ahead and did Tonys' in MK.

As a related note, it's a good idea to practice running out of fuel on a long run every so often so you learn how your body responds when that happens. Nothing beforehand except hydration and no refueling other than hydration along the way, and see what happens. Usually, you'll find a point at which you start feeling run down well before you actually get weak or light headed. Once you know that reaction, you know to refuel right away in the future if you get that feeling coming on.
ITA with this, but with a caveat: be careful if you have chronic blood sugar issues. I have chronic and reactive hypoglycemia and already knew before starting distance running that I had to watch my blood sugar... but I learned an important lesson after this past PHM. I'd been taking a gel every 45 mins, as usual, but didn't bother with my final one because I was within 1/2 a mile of the finish: I told myself I'd take it as soon as I finished. And then forgot. Fast forward a half hour or so, I'd been hanging with friends, chatting about our races, drinking some water, and went into a major sugar crash mid-sentence. Shaking, crying, dizzy, unable to think clearly, blood pressure dropping - it was bad, but I was lucky to be with someone who recognized it and got a gel into me ASAP. It was a scary 15 mins or so until my sugar got back on track and I vowed never, ever again to skip a fueling during a run and to always have one more gel than I *should* need on hand, just in case.

For those of you who have run disney races before, especially the 5k that ends in Epcot. How much time did you spend after you were done racing at the race finish site? And then about how much time did it take you to get onto a monorail or bus if you headed somewhere other than Epcot during the day?
I generally stroll slowly through the finish chute to collect medals, food, etc., skip finisher photos, and am in my car or at the bus stop within maybe 15 mins of finishing. Say 20-25 if I stop for ice, to put on a jacket, use a porta-potty, etc.

A curious question/questions for yall... how many days will you be at the resort/park before the event you are running? If you are arriving early, are you planning on walking around the parks like you would any other day, or do you plan to stay off your feet as much as you can and not spend as much time at the parks?
I'm semi-local and spend plenty of non-race time in the parks, so I tend not to hit the parks much during a multi-race weekend. Jan., I'll arrive Thurs, depart Mon. I'm doing the 10K and Full, so I may stop into a park or two for a couple rides Thurs and Fri, but I'll mostly enjoy a weekend of rest and relaxation between races.

Complete unrelated to marathon weekend question. Does anyone know or remember how quickly the princess half fills up.
Fast. GSC will go within an hour, if last year was any indication. The 1/2 may take longer, but I'd keep an eye on it and act quickly when it hits 80% full. 10K is likely to go fast. 5K is hard to say... I think the Frozen theme made it go lightning fast last time, so there may be a little wiggle room this time.

Yea, quite a few BOG dinner reservations are available. I was tempted to move mine up 45 minutes, but knowing my luck something would break and I'd lose both reservations...I'll just leave well enough alone.

Tony's was my alternate and is what we are currently scheduled for. It's not my favorite option but it will work. Going to be there very early in the afternoon.

I haven't even booked an ADR for my trip in September yet and some of you are already booking for January.

I have it in both feet. It started this year. I had no problems last year. But, I got some advice on treating it from someone on another thread and it works like a dream. I just do calf stretches and I stand on a golf ball to stretch it out and massage it. I hardly have any pain now at all and when I do I just do some extra golf ball action.

I had 11 miles scheduled. I did about 4.5 miles. I have been struggling the last 2 weeks. Ever since my 10K on 7/3 my leg has been hurting. I have been struggling mentally too. It happened last year at this time. Oh well, I will just keep plugging away.

I made my hotel reservation today. I will be at All-Star Sports. I wish I could have gone a little nicer but it doesn't make sense because I don't plan to be in the room very much.

I only did it because I want to eat with princesses and in castles, and those ADRs can be hard to get (although I've gotten BOG within a month of my trip twice). I've never booked this far in advance before, it's definitely a weird feeling for me.

I stayed at All-Star Sports for Princess Weekend - it's definitely a decent place to be if you're not going to be in the room much, and we had a good experience with the race transportation (never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes for a bus, usually less, and we had our own bus going to our race that didn't stop at the other All-Stars, which was an unexpected bonus).

Yeah, I stayed at Sports for Tower of Terror weekend and it was a good experience. No waiting for buses or anything, like you said. I just kinda wanted to be on the monorail for the marathon, since it is a pretty big deal. I technically have the money to do it. I guess I just figured the extra $500 for the Contemporary could be used for a nice meal or two and some spending at the Expo.

Bottom line is, I will be at Disney. I will be running the WDW Marathon. The hotel doesn't really matter. When I am on Main Street looking at the castle I won't care one bit which hotel I am sleeping at.

Interesting I couldn't get one for the 7th but will keep looking.
