Marathon Weekend 2016

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and got those long runs in, I had mine today and passed a new high mileage mark with a 16 miler, it was hard and there was more than once that I wanted to just give up but I trudged on and made it to the end the one thought I kept having to keep me going was "what if this is marathon day you aren't going to quit then so why quit now" on a side not since it was such a long run I used my hydration backpack instead of my belt and I'm now rethinking wether to us the backpack on race day or stick with the belt I really liked having plenty of water at the ready and while I know Disney is pretty good with water stops its a nice feeling not even having to think about weather I have enough on hand. also a running friend asked on facebook asked what kind of weather we could expect and I sort of snickered and said well one year there was snow and another a heat advisory so who really knows LOL

Well, Les Miles is still the head coach of LSU. Good for him, and good for the leaders of that program for figuring out that they have someone worth keeping at that position. I hope it works out for both.

I did my long run yesterday too - new mileage for me, 11 miles. I made it, but it was cold, and raining, and windy.... I sat in my car at mile 8 (and changed into a dry shirt!) and thought about going home but I went back out and made it. My first double digit run - since I made it this far, I figure I can do 13.1! It's coming soon!

I just tried to do my long run this morning. But the weather has been really funny here in Brazil.
We had an ok temperature yesterday (around 75ºF), so I figured that today would be a great chilly morning to do a long run. No..not today, though!
Suddenly the sun started shining bright and hot in the middle of our practice... and my friend and I decided that it would probably be smarter to just stop at 10K before we collapse (it was 97ºF at that point)!
I just hope to be able to get off earlier from work this week, so I can do a real long run this time!

Going off Wine & Dine, I'm anticipating it'll be warmer than the last two years
Temperature was okay - mid-70's during the day, which should make for decent morning running. But thunderstorms I think every day. After what happened with Wine & Dine ... I think thunderstorms freak me out the most because they could result in safety issues that could lead rD to modify the event.
Given Wine & Dine's weather, I'm assuming it'll be warmer than it has been the last 2 years... I'm envisioning something along the lines of 2013 though I hope I am really, really wrong.

While I know I will stalk the forecasts once we get closer if I learned 1 thing from the W&D it's don't listen to forecasts. ;) Before we left our room I saw 1 tv station forecast showing nothing but "possible showers" at 2:00 am. I thought we would be fine. While in line for the bus the people in front of us were looking at the radar with a big green blob heading right for us. So basically at least 1 forecast was very wrong just a few hours out. I don't know why I listen but I'm sure I still will. :rolleyes1

Congrats to everyone who ran through the holiday and to those getting in some longer runs! :cheer2:

I'm going to go with a warm MW, the weather has been crazy warm here in the central Florida area. 2015MW I froze my bum off & shivered for days. I ran the best in 50-60F weather, so 5 days out of the year I have the perfect PR temps in Florida.

Bad running day for me :( Trekked down to Seattle from Vancouver yesterday for the marathon this morning. I woke up at 3am and had awful upset stomach. It was still an issue 30 mins prior to race time so I decided it wasn't worth having an awful time and we made our way home after a slow morning.

So no long run in today but am taking tomorrow off work. Hoping I'll be better by morning and get the 26 miles I'd have run today in then.

Ah well, better to have it happen today than in January. Great job those of you who did your long runs today! :)

January 10, 2016 will be my first marathon. It has been quite a journey. First, I tweaked my knee getting cut off running the Falmouth Road race in August. Then, I rolled my ankle and fractured my fibula during the first half mile running the Smuttynose half marathon on October 4th, a race I was only running so I would have a qualifying time in January. Well I finished that race, fractured ankle and all in 2:18! And of course I had no idea it was fractured, I thought it was just a bad sprain (and it absolutely killed every step from mile 9 to the finish line).

Today it has been exactly 8 weeks since the fracture, and while I haven't been able to run since, I have been able to do multiple workouts each week during the last 4 weeks on the elliptical and arctrainer machines to keep up the cardio. My longest workout being 5 hours straight on the machines. I know running and non-impact is completely different and hopefully I can start running in 2 weeks. No matter what, I'm going to try to complete this race. It is a bucket list item of mine for some time.

Good luck to everyone.

You guys. I'm screwed.

I try to do cardio classes (Body Combat and Turbo Kick) 3-4 times a week and I tend to walk around a LOT at work, but I haven't done a single training session for the Goofy Challenge. As of now, my game plan is to walk the 1/2, and jog/walk the Marathon and not push myself to finish within any specific time frame... I've walked the San Francisco Women's Half in 2:51 with minimal pain afterwards. Also I've jog/walked 14 half marathons already so I know what to expect in that realm.

Bets on whether I survive or not based on this tentative plan of attack. :nervous:

Well the first thing I would suggest is that there is still a month before the event. It may not be the perfect timetable to train for a marathon, but there is still time to put in some meaningful training. I think there is a danger when you realize your training may not be exactly where you want it to be to give up on training altogether. Please don't allow yourself to fall into this trap.

I think it is very possible to finish the Goofy, but it is always important to remember that the back half of a marathon is an incredibly taxing mental and physical challenge and much different than the first 13.1. I'm not trying to be negative; I just think there is still time to make some meaningful training gains. Your plan will probably be the best for you when Marathon Weekend arrives, but it will be less painful if you use the next few weeks doing the best you can to prepare rather than worrying about how unprepared you feel.

So, for those of you with more runDisney experience than me (than I? I always mix that one up) ...

We're only about a week over 30 days out. Any chance we'll see the waivers this week? Or is next week the earliest possibility?

From my experience (last two years), waivers should appear between Thursday (12/3) and Tuesday (12/8) of this and next week. Fingers crossed!

Edited to add: Just read rundisney and it says "two weeks" before the race. Thought it said a "month" just a few weeks ago. Maybe they're changing it up.

Went to the game... here to eat crow. The whole thing is/was a circus. Speaking of this weekend, usually after my long runs on home game days, I take a bike ride to City Park and take a shower. Well, apparently the city felt the place needed to remain closed from Thanksgiving until today. No shower = very unhappy runner.

Please let us know what you think of the new Saucony's. I've been buying Guide's exclusively since I started running and also can't wait to try the 9's.

I wound up buying a pair of the new triumps. When you pull the insole out the everun material looks and feels a lot like the boost material but it is a little more spongey. I did an 18 miler in them on saturday. Overall they felt good. Maybe a little bit soft when I was at a slower pace but they felt really good at marathon pace. I shouldn't have worn them for an 18miler as my first real run in them as they are a lower drop than my adidas andnow my calfs are killing me.

I hope it's not as warm as 2013 that was brutal.

I am blown away that someone could do 5 hours on an elliptical. That is some serious mental training there. I hope things start to feel better

OT, is the SF Women's half the Nike one? I really want to do that one some day, but those hills scare me. Also, you walked it faster than I've run/walked my last two half marathons. lol.

On another note, I think I've started to over think my running. Something weird is going on with either how I'm landing on each foot or the shoes or something. I'm getting shin splints, which hasn't happened since I just started running, or weird ankle pain. The shoes are relatively new, but I have run two halfs in them. Maybe I should go back to the running store? Or how do I turn my brain off and just run. Everything feels awkward lately (since Avengers).

No advice for you, but I have to say I'm having the EXACT same problem. since avengers my feet alternate which is hurting, I have shin pain, though it feels a little different than shin splints. And I'm getting pain just behind my ankles. I think that's my peroneals, I had peroneal tendinitis once before, though then only on one side. I also have pain in the outer edge of my left foot. It's funny because I felt great all three races that weekend, but since I'm home I feel like I'm falling apart! A new version of my favorite shoes (brooks defyance) comes out tomorrow. I'm hoping the old ones (which I run in only for long runs now) go on sale, because although my other two pairs are low mileage (brook ghost and mizuno waverider - I rotate 3), I definitely feel the least pain in the defyance. I'm hoping it's the shoes so it's an easy fix.

It's very weird. Nothing feels natural when I run right now and I don't know what's going on. :(

I would keep an eye on this link:

Lately, we've been able to see bib numbers a couple days out before waivers are available. I'll keep poking around for waivers, but someone (*cough, cough* @mbwhitti) has me searching for Dooney design right now. ;)
