Marathon Weekend 2016

You gotta love getting passed by a guy pushing his 30+ lb kid by you. It happens to all of us. I've been passed during a 5k at a 7:30 pace, but my all time favorite is my much faster buddy was running a 5k a little below a 6 minute pace and got passed by a guy pushing a stroller. 200+ for the month :worship:.

Wow pushing a stroller at a sub 6 pace is really impressive.

I once was passed during a 5K by a guy pushing toddler triplets! I was in awe!
I would have been tempted to ask for a ride.

I've got the Disneyland half this weekend and this the most nervous I've been before a race in recent years. I'm only a couple of weeks out from Chicago and so I'm hoping to use this race to gauge my fitness level. I'm really concerned that all the work I've been doing to follow Hanson's plan isn't going to pay off and my half time won't improve. I'm really ready to be done with my "race" races and ready to be headed to my fun races at disneyworld.

I hear you. I love running, but I don't love "racing" the way that I used to. Disney races are the best - they provide motivation for training beyond my normal running schedule, but without the pressure of a PR attempt.

Good luck in your upcoming races, and try to keep it fun.

I knew my monthly mileage would be low because of my injury. I wasn't even going to add it up but I decided to and now I am depressed. I knew I shouldn't have. So I did 72.11 miles of running and 132.06 miles on the bike.

At this point my right shin is still hurting, although it feels like it is getting better. I still hope to run my POT race next Saturday but that seems to be slipping away as well as I am going to have a hard time even fitting in my bike rides while we get back into the groove with school starting. I know I could run the race with no problem. I just don't know if I will do well enough to improve my time and that would be the only reason to run it at this point.

I already know my mileage for this month will be awful so I am bummed about that too.

Can someone please remind me why I do this again??? :rolleyes1

Is it for the free banana and snack box?

Injury's suck! It is also unfortunate that even if you are able to run with them, it just takes away from the whole experience. So far I have not had an issue that has been able to improve while continuing to run. I know people who have done it though, so its possible. Maybe after your half, taking a few weeks off may give you the best chance in the long run. Very little fitness is lost in two weeks, so I would even take a week off the bike as well.

72 miles of running with 132 on the bike isn't a terrible month. Don't beat yourself up for having lower totals than desired. Its not like you are perfectly healthy and instead of running you drank a case of beer and fried food. You have a reason why you did not get the miles you wanted.

I have no idea why we do this. I however keep doing it.

It seems strange, but several doctors told me the same thing: plantar fasciitis does not improve with rest any more than while running as long as the running is at a moderate pace and long run distances are kept reasonable. After 8 weeks of pain I decided to ignore them and tried taking 2 weeks off (about 6 weeks ago) and it set my conditioning back without helping my injury at all (just as my doctors had suggested). If anything, my foot was more painful when running after the break than before.

Plantar fasciitis is a weird injury. Healing time varies hugely from one instance of the injury to the next. Doctors really don't know much about its treatment or cause (other than "overuse"). Treatments successes are wildly unpredictable.

Well folks, August is over. Time to post your monthly mileage.

Hello, I'm new here -- sort of. I've been lurking and just wanted to say I really appreciate everyone's comments. I hardly can think of a question to ask!

August running mileage: 39.2
Cycling mileage: 240.7

This might seem a bit unorthodox, but I come from a cycling background. I've adapted the Jeff Galloway training calendar to replace one day of running with a lot of cycling. I feel good and I feel good about where I am.

Thanks again and best wishes to everyone.

Welcome!

I was looking at your signature and realized we are about to go under 4 months until Marathon Weekend!!! Getting closer.

When the zombies come, you'll be ready.

Gear check question. What kind of gear do you all usually check? I usually always have a person with me when I go to races and they are like my personal locker to hold my stuff. But at Disney my little group is running together and so will either use gear check or take nothing but ourselves. But I hear weather can be cold sometimes? We plan to go to Chef Mickey's in our hotel all sweaty and gross after and then back to the room to get ready for the day.

I only do bag check if it is really cold and I anticipate needing warm gear to wear at the finish. Otherwise I carry everything that I need and tough it out until I get back to my resort.

Well, I am beating myself up. I had huge goals and most of them won't happen this year. I swore I would never miss a race I signed up for and I may do it in my second year of running. I am just aggravated right now beyond belief.

My shin still hurts but my foot seems to be hurting less. I can actually walk on it the right way so that's good. I have 8 days til my POT race. I wish I knew what I should do. >:(

I have only done one runDisney race, it was the ToT, which was at night. I used gear check because I was alone and I wanted to change for the after party. For this race I won't be checking anything. I will just go from the race to my room to shower and change. As for the cold, I am from MA. FL cold is still warm enough for me to wear shorts and a T-shirt most likely. If needed I will bring a throw away sweatshirt or something.

As you are becoming more experienced, you are beginning to realize that sometimes things happen that are beyond your control. We can train and train, but stuff happens. Turned ankle, pulled muscle, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, etc., etc. The good news - none of these things happen to couch potatoes. They are happening to us because we are actively living our lives. I'll happily accept these setbacks under those conditions. I will never allow myself to miss a race due to laziness, but accept missed races due to injury.

Dry shirt and flip flops at a minimum. No fun hanging out having a post-race beer in sweaty clothes. Depending on the weather, I'll throw in a jacket and/or sweats as needed. My check bag also holds my phone and magic band.

Not sure if it helps but I’ve been lurking over on the Disneyland Half thread. There’s some expo photos over there and lots of people giving their trip and expo updates. That’s the stuff that keeps me going…looking forward to being there and enjoying the event.

Hopefully you’ll get healthy soon, just don’t overdo it. Injuries are our body’s way of telling us to back off, slow down or take a break.

Not much for morning races and it really depends on weather: if there's a chance of rain and/or it's on the cool side, I pack something warm and dry, like a long-sleeve shirt or fleece jacket. Always my favorite old Crocs, but I'll add a dry pair of socks if it's cool and/or rainy. A Clif bar because I need to eat ASAP after finishing.

Thanks to my trusty Flynn Rider running satchel, I have enough room for a change of clothes, some spare boots, a tiara and a wide assortment of smolders. It comes in quite handy and I don't need to check a bag.

When I finish a longer race taking my shoes off is usually the first thing on my mind. I love slipping into a pair of comfy slides or flip flops. I'f I have a clean shirt at the end of the race, that's gravy. I didn't use to worry about being cold at the end of the race, but disney has seemed to get stingy with it's mylar blankets.

Thank you all for the good gear check suggestions. I had not thought about the comfy shoe/flip flops but that makes total sense especially if we are going to hike to the monorail to get our behinds to Chef Mickeys.

And totally funny about the Flynn bag @IamTrike
How do the security guards react when they are hit with all that smolder during bag check?

Well the smolders are individually wrapped and stored in a little box so that security wouldn't have to look directly at the smolders.

In all seriousness my wife and I ran as flynn and rapunzel for the princess half a couple years ago. It was surprisingly convenient to have a satchel to store stuff during the race.

I feel like it would drive me crazy to run with a bag...but I've never tried it & I'm the one who just signed up to run a race holding a pumpkin. So....
