Marathon Training Thread for the week starting 5/17

Melanioe- why don't you try having a protein shake an hour before you walk on the treadmill? When I do that I have tons of energy for the rest of the day!

Wanted to add to Karen's ideas about the socks. Be sure to wash your socks before you wear them. I didn't and I paid for that :earseek: (of course, the first time I wore them, I walked something like five or six miles. :smash: ) I do like them now, though. I'm still not up to speed on the walking-knee sore and I'm breaking in that second pair of shoes. I AM moving my body, though, and that's good. :teeth:

we really need to appreciate every 1/10th /mile we walk that is beyond the norm for us!

THAT'S THE TRUTH!!! :sunny:

technically I shouldn't be in here as I'm not doing the Disney event this year, but reading your stories keeps me motivated for the things I am doing: but just wanted to answer one of the questions: re speed/time. Time is most important, but a sneaky way to improve speed without noticeing it to increase the incline on your treadmill while you walk - a trainer told me this last year when I had an injury that played up when I tried to go faster, so I did the incline thing and knocked a full 10 minutes off my half marathon time. Good luck everyone.

donkey- THANKS for that tip! that's a really great idea! Too bad you won't be walking wiht us this year, but if you'd like to keep reading and posting hints etc- I know I'd appreciate it!

Not much time to post, as I am running to the shower (long distance, I swear!) and then to see Shrek 2! I am very excited!

I took a leisurely weekend, and got entirely off plan. I bounced back on plan on Monday, though, so that feels better. I went for an awesome run/walk yesterday (3.7 mi in 45 min.), and I am all geared up for tomorrow's! I like the plan that I am on because it does not focus on speed at all. It just says run for 3 min, walk for 2 with no distance requirement. There are distance requirements on Saturdays, but the time aspect is gone. So, very easy to follow and feel good about, but I also feel that it really is preparing me.

I have a list of those of you that wanted the plans, and will be sending those out this week. Let me know if there is anyone else who would like one. I feel like a walking advertisement!

Anyway, gotta run so I can see the movie! Hope everybody's day is going well, I will post a motivational thought either later on tonight or tomorrow...

Keep it up!
Ashley

Good morning everyone!!

I managed to do 1 hr on the TM last night - actually tried running a little bit too (did not even make it to 2 min :( ) I will keep trying.

Am doing a 2 mile walk for the local Boys & Girls club (sponsered by my Church) this Saturday, so I'm hoping the weather will hold out.

I still have 1 more copy of Running Times w/ the ad if anyone else needs one (just PM me if you do).

Molli-sent out the magazine this morning - please let me know when you get it.

Littlegreydonkey - thanks so much for your imput - I hadn't thought about changing the incline. Maybe I'll try it tonight.

Ashley - hope you enjoyed the movie - let me know what you thought of it. Hope your graduation went well, and that you had fun.

Debbie - thanks for the tid-bit about washing the socks before using them - never thought about that!

Hope everyone has a good day!!

Not a lot of time on the boards this week. I am still working on controlling my eating by journaling and I'm seeing things I don't like, which is a good thing. Anyway, I went to Curves on Monday, didn't do anything on Tuesday. I wasn't feeling well Wed. morning when I would have went to Curves so I stayed in bed, but while the kids were at their gym class, I had another Mom watch them and I went on over to Curves and got my workout in. I also just finished 30 min. on the treadmill this morning so I am back on schedule with exercising. I will Curve tomorrow and treadmill on Saturday.

I enjoyed reading through the tread and got some wonderful inspiration and tips. Keep up the great work everyone!

Good morning everyone! I am proud and HAPPY to say that I have completed my 1.5/30 minutes walk this morning- and it's only 8:30am!! I really like it when I get this done first thign in the morning- it makes me feel like I have completed many things for the day.ANyone else like that?

Tammy- I admire your sense of dedication to this program. Even though you are not feeling well, you still srudge through it all. I hope you are feeling better.

Mishoe- YOU RAN?!??!?!? YIPPPEEEEEE! I ahven't even thought about doing that yet- wel.... I'vew thought about it, but wouldn't DARE do it as I'm afarid I would absolutely ruin my kness. But- GOOD FOR YOU GIRL! You RULE!!!

Ashley- how was the movie? I LOVE A GOOD MOVIE!

tickled "pink" !!!! I did my first WI/measurement at Curves tonight and (by their scale) I am down 9.5 lbs and 4.75 inches in one month !!!!!

Let me tell you that I am really liking Curves today ;)

I am keeping up with the treadmilling and "limiting" my sugar but for me this is just remarkable.

I set a "mini-goal" and I was within .5 of that number today - so I am considering it a victory! Of course now, I am on my way to that Las Vegas get-a-way - so I am sure I will come home to re-lose a few ::yes:: but just knowing that it is attainable is the positive thoughts I am repeating to myself!!

mmm- now this relates to training cuz' the less I carry around with me on those 13.1 miles - the better!!!

Well- it's 3:30am and I cannot sleep! I started taking the appettite suppresent my Dr. prescribe to break the insulin resistence and this is a lovely side effect! If I was the only one home, I might be walking on the treadmill, but I will just have to opt for visiting the thread instead.

Grammy- WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO FOR YOU!!!! That is a fantastic result for 1 month at Curves! You should be proud and excited! And just so ya know.. you don't have to relate all news here to the marathon. I love to hear about everyone's good times and success's- so you just post them here and we'll all enjoy with you! Heck........ you can even post when you're feeling blue... we can help with that too!

yesterday must've been a bad day for training- not too many posts!

Well, yesterday I got up at 5:30 and did the 1 mile WATP. Did some heavy duty "warehouse book sale" walking ;) and that's about it. I didn't get up this morning, but I hope to hit Curves later today. We'll see. My knee is still bothering me, so I have a dr.'s appointment scheduled for Tuesday. In the meantime, I hope to hit a drugstore to buy a knee brace. Good luck everyone. And for those going away for the weekend. . . have fun!

vacation mode!!! But wanted to tell you that WI was as official as official gets - this morning 150.00 - got 2 miles tmilling done - jogged 1.5 of it. Next exercise will be on the streets of Vegas -we'll see how well good intentions hold up!

Ohmom pack those exercise clothes!

See ya next week everyone - keep up the good work !!!

I got my 3 Curves in this week and have treadmilled once. I plan on getting my other treadmilling in tomorrow morning.

Bev-Congratulations on seeing 150!!! I am so happy for you. Have fun in Vegas and win lots of $$$.

Happy Friday everyone!

Good morning everyone!

I took a day of rest yesterday - spent the evening with my sister and nephew, and by the time I got home did not feel like doing anything!! Did only 5665 steps yesterday :( , oh well - hopefully today will be better.

2 mile walk tomorrow morning.

Hope everyone has a good morning.

Bev - have a blast in Vegas!!

Tammy - magazine is on it's way

1 more Running Times left!

Good morning!! Yesterday was my day off and today I only walked a shorter day, but at least I still got back out there!! My body was kicking and screaming and wanting to stay home!!lol I only walked about 35 minutes, but tomorrow I'm walking longer.

Here's a question for you...for those of you who are embarking on your first half or whole marathon, what do people say when you tell them? I've only told a few friends what I am getting ready to do and although they are supportive, they seem quite shocked that I would decide to do something like this!!

Karen, I think we have the same walk1 tape. It's by shape and it's all 60's music. I think it averages 3 MPH. It says 3MPH on the cover but I didn't notice it for a long time! Sounds like your walking is going great!! Sorry that you didn't show a loss again this week. I usually only show a loss once a month. Good for you on walking early!! That helps my day so much!! Otherwise I'm so sleepy about 3PM! YIKES on the insomnia!! Can you take a tylenol PM or anything for that? Don't nap or it will cause a vicious cycle!

Melanie, if I don't walk first thing in the AM, then I know I won't walk at all. Last summer I walked while the kids did swim lessons (think 11AM...hot Florida summer sun!) and I'm not sure I'm up for the heat this year to walk while they swim, so I don't know. But I'm trying to psyche myself up to at least walking a mile while they are in the pool. Still do my morning thing, but add that, too....

Ashley, how was Shrek2? We're going tonight for my hubby's birthday. He only sees a movie in the theaters once every 10 years, so I was surprised that he agreed to go. (He saw Shrek a couple years ago!lol)

Monica- have fun on your walk tomorrow!

Tammy, I have to really watch myself to journal every BLT. (bite lick, taste) or before you know it, I've eaten much more than my list shows!! Journaling definitely keeps me on track and if I know my food plan BEFORE I eat, when I journal and then eat, I am more strict with myself. I hate to go back and add things after a meal! Good luck with your journaling!

Bev, WTG on the loss!! Have fun in Vegas. (my #2 favorite vacation place!) My hubby and I still talk about the prime rib we had at Excaliber almost 15 years ago!!

Debbie, hope that knee is better. OUch!! I hope you get good news at the doc.

Have a great day everyone!!
~~Beth

Hey everyone,

Well this morning I TM'd instead of doing my cardio video. I did a little over 3 miles doing 5 minute walking/running intervals. I think I will continue this till after the race. At least I know I will get some training time in if I do it in the morning and it should be more consistant.

I need to learn more about breathing properly though. I don't think I am doing well at this. I feel like its all coming from my chest and definately not my diaphram(sp?)

Molli and Bev- Have a wonderful time in Las Vegas!! I am so jealous! Wave hi to my mom at the Treasure Island (she works there)! Get some good workouts on the strip.

Have a good day everyone!

Yesterday , I ran a total of 4.25 miles............
I run the first the mile then walk for 2 minutes....... then run till 2 and walk again for 2 until I get to 4 then I simply walk to cool down for about 4 minutes............
To run 4 miles takes me about 46:20.........
training is tough!
But I have began my Wellbutrin last week, I am hopng that I can quit smoking with help form that!
Once I quit, I am guessing I can go further!
Thing is, I dont feel my heart racing to much when I am done.......I mean does the smoking just make me tired quicker?
My legs are pretty strong and like I said, heart isnt really racing.....
so how do you think the smoking is actually effecting my distance?

What do you all think?

thanks for all the send-off wishes :) Mom is flying high and deserves to be. I know she'll be more on the side of good food choices, so I'll TRY to listen to her ;)

Today I did our third workout of Week 4 in my walk/jog transition program. Next week is a big jump to jog 15 mins from the 10 mins of this week. Yesterday I had a day of active rest and did 40 mins of pilates and today my hammie felt much better. I think I have been overdoing the cardio-leg workouts and need at least one lighter day in the week now that i'm jogging a bit more. I hope to incorporate some evening brisks walks after I get home and back on track from the time change next week. ok - not really the time change but the lack of sleep!

My visit with podiatrist went well yesterday. Nice guy, he stated at least three times that i have "very interesting feet" hmmm?? and more than once said my right foot is worse off then my left? meaning what?? I dunno yet. I had some weight-bearing foot x-rays taken and we'll evaluate them in two weeks. I just wanted new orthotics -- he's determined to get to the bottom of WHY? do I have trouble instead the temporary band-aid I got from my last doc. Apparently my rt foot slants (long bones in foot) and that causes me to roll my foot and puts pressure in my hot spot.

have a great weekend ladies! I'll bet one on a hard six for y'all!!

Hi everyone!!

Hope your weekend is going well.

I just wanted to post that I finished the 2 mile walk/race in 35 min!! WOOHOO!! I'm so happy!! Got my first medal!

Will try to do some more walking later today.

Hope everyone is well.
Take care!

Being home is the worst place I could be for training... But the best place for shopping!

Mom and I ventured out at about 10 this morning, to the mall (we live less than ten minutes from Mall of America). We meandered around and got sunglasses and other fun things, but then we hit up Galyan's! Wooohooo! New shoes, clothes, the whole bit. Here is what I learned...

Go to a place that will really talk to you. The girl at Galyan's helped me for 45 minutes, and I tried on every stability shoe and a few cushion shoes that htey had (New Balance 765s). In the end I went with the very first pair I tried on, but I don't feel a bit bad about it it, they feel perfect. And they were on Clearance, only $60! So, I bought two, and am putting one pair aside for November.

Cool Max, Dri-Fit, Dri-Lete, Hydrator, Whatever. Wear it. It is so comfortable! I only have one running outfit, and then a few little tops and one long sleeve top. I don't have a washer/dryer, but I plan to wash them in the sink a few times a week. These same rules apply to underwear. Champion makes some very nice microfiber, wicking material underwear and they aren't expensive. They were only $7 because they were on sale. I also got CoolMax socks from Gold Toe, and I really like them. They are a little cushioned, very comfortable, and not too expensive. They were buy 3 get one free, and the 2 packs were $10. Go spend hours at your local sporting goods store! I must say, though, I am a huge nerd and could not help being excited when I got home and found that the shoes matched the outfit, I didn't even notice while I was there, but they are even more perfect than I noticed in teh store. Also, they threw in a free training journal, so some of my motivational quotes will come from there. It's funny, because I almost bought this very same one at B&N for $10! Such a bargain shopper I am!

I am going back tomorrow to get a Camelbak. Does anybody have one of these? I like the idea of being able to carry my water, CD player, ID, Mace (my boyfriend is in law enforcement, he says that I am not allowed to be without it...my mom agrees), keys, etc in it. So please, let me know what you think of it if you have one. I am just planning on getting the 1.4 liter pak that goes around your waist like a fanny pack.

Anyway, since I didn't give everybody a thought this week, I will give you one to close it, and then post another next week...

"Good things come slowly--especially in distance running."

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and stay motivated! I know I need to work on that! But hey, now I have cute training clothes!
