Marathon Training Thread for the Week of 6/7-6/14

Hi guys -

I keep wondering where the time goes - my work day doesn't go that fast, it's just all the hours I am not there seem to "fly by"!

Anyway, I don't think that I saw a post by Ohmom (their family is off to Cedar Point amusement park for a couple of days) so I wanted to let you know that her DD Paige had a good report from the eye dr. He does want to see her every 3 months as patients on steroid treatment can develop cataracts, but so far so good :Pinkbounc :bounce: Also, said the infusion treatment went okay too. Ohmom said she hasn't been feeling all that great (Ohio sinus symptoms) she has been getting in some exercising, but admits to some "grazing" this week. She will be back Sunday and I am sure will have an update but just thought I would give you the dd dr report.

I am hoping the rain moves out of Ohio, so they can have a great day tomorrow at Cedar Point. we had some torrential downpours today! Humidity has been high - it's a "don't bother with the hair" kind of week here :p

Trola2 - I hear ya on the knee aggravating machine at Curves - I did back off one this week, thought it was too much. thanks for the "heads up" on it, too!

I struggled again today to get up and "move" but I did some Jane Fonda weight workout and WATP - tomorrow hopefully I can get my 8 miler walk in before I have to move on with a busy day!

I MUST get my "head" back into this lifestyle my body is seeking - I feel so "heavy" (lots of people call it fluffy - let me tell you I feel a real "heaviness" when the weather is humid and I am - mmmm -well, let's just say eating more carbs than I should be) :teeth:

No more eating tonight tho, I have been able to at least stay with that part of my recent committment - no eating after 7:00.

Off to get on some comfy clothes and veg!

Hang in there everyone - we are doing good - some days better than others but just keep onward to the goal !!

:wave2: and ((((((hugs))))) too!

Hey everyone!

After the past couple days of insane heat, yesterday and today are beautiful so in about an hour I am going to head out to do a long run/walk.

Alreadyexcited - The weather can make your whole mood change. I was so darn sleepy I didn't want to move. But way to get back in the game!

Karebear - Unfortunately - I di not walk however I did blast some music and danced like a crazy women. That was a little more fun!:cutie:

My wrist is about 6 inches. I am so excited to see what the surprise is. :earseek:

I leave for Disney in 14 days! If anyone needs to me to check anything out when I am down there let me know!:earsgirl: :earsboy:

I always have thoughts of why am I doing this when I first start my walk. AFter about 1 1/2 miles, I'm pretty much in my stride and feel I could walk all the way to Orlando. But getting past that first mile and a half is so tough for me!! I did walk 1:20 today and I think that is between 4 1/2 and 5 miles for me. I do my long walk on Saturday, so I'm glad to have accomplished that today. My sweaty feet are asking for me to try coolmax socks so I'm heading out shopping later today.

Karen, for me, I have that same walk1 CD that you have and then I also have walk2. I burn a CD with part of both on it and then that way I am building myself up to handle the faster speed. I'm up to about 30 minutes of the #2 CD and I'm getting ready to add another song to it, so that will give me about 35 minuts at the faster speed. When I walk through the week, my minimum time is long enough to cover all the faster speed songs and then I will round out my walk with the slower ones. I don't know if that makes any sense or not. Your speed is really picking up, though!! Good for you on your 2 miles yesterday!!

Ashley- I need to email you my info. I still haven't done that. I will today. Can you take a bag of fruit and leave at the house? Maybe that would start a good trend for them. For us, just having fruit in the house was a big step. That and moving far far away from McDonald's!!lol

Grammy- good for you on the no food after 7 committment!! I'm not usually a night snacker, but we have days that I do good to get dinner on the table by 7PM. lol But I'm getting better about that! Thanks for the update on Paige. Eye problems can be so scary!! A curves just opened about 30 minutes from me. I'm tempted to try it out again. I'll keep you posted. It's been a couple of years since I went there.

Karen, I also thought about the surgery. I'm sure I would have been accepted with the weight I was. But I had a problem with an epidural with one of my kids and thought I was going to die on the table, and my fear of anesthesia is so great I don't think I could commit to something that wasn't 100% required of me! So...I trudge on. Very slowly onward and downward.

Cheryl, I'm sure you have already left for Hilton Head. Have a blast. My mom talks about driving there and she kept seeing the mileage signs that would say Hilton Head Is 33 miles (or whatever. She was reading the "Is" as the word is instead of Island and thought it was so strange to see it written out like that. Then it was funny to her when she drove over the bridge and the sign said "Hilton Head Is". Anyway, I always think of that when anyone mentions Hilton Head. Have fun!

Krista, I think I'm going to e in Orlando in 2 weeks, too. I have a friend who has been an email buddy for me for over 10 years now. We've never met since they live in Hawaii and they will be in Orlando!! It's only 9-10 hours for me to get there, but I think the kids and I will head that way. Hubby was supposed to go and his work canceled his vacation. Anyway, we're not doing Disney since our season passes are on blackout then, but I know we will have to hit DTD at least once!! Where are you staying?

Have a great day everyone!!

:drinking1 It may look dark, but it really is water.

Just got back in from a 2 hour (hopefully 8 mi ) walk. Weather still very humid and now looks like some rain - so perfect timing.

Trola@ - I so relate:

I always have thoughts of why am I doing this when I first start my walk. AFter about 1 1/2 miles, I'm pretty much in my stride and feel I could walk all the way to Orlando. But getting past that first mile and a half is so tough for me!!

well Orlando would be way too far :teeth: but I need at least a mile to get my bod into it too! Now with the humidity the way it is I was feeling like I had on ankle weights today - that's why I say I am hoping it was 8 my pace may have been a tad slower.

Sorry I can't take the time to respond to each of you - I am off to shower and then phase II for the day - meeting a friend and doing a little shopping but I think of each of you and know that together we are just getting healthier in so many ways!

Have a good day/weekend everyone and don't forget your water!

Bev

Today is my rest day- and I am going to rest! :teeth: maybe later this afternoon we'll go downtown portland and check out the fleet of ships here for the Rose Festival.

Beth- I think I'm gonna take your idea and make myself a cd like yours. I always seem to start out a little slow- but in about 10 minutes I really ready to book it- and the music is still too slow- so I just walk at my own speed.

One thing I've noticed especially in the past week is that I really am building up energy (and therefore speed) in my walking now. My problem is, sometimes I feel like I could walk much faster, maymbe evenm run. But when I do really pick up the pace, my poor hips, back and knees pay for it all day. I think I'm still just too heavy to try to do those things. Could that be reality? I have finally started losing again since I went back to Atkins eating last Monday- so maybe I'll lose another 15-20 before I get to another plateau- and then I'll be able to pick up to a much faster pace. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can increase my workout without increasing the speed too much for now?

Have a good workout today everyone and enjoy your Saturday!

I am writing to say that I am getting back on track. I was on vacation for a week and then not feeling so great this week. I am now feeling better and know that it is time to stop making excuses. I love reading everyone's accomplishments as they are so encouraging. Keep up the great work and thanks to everyone for the inspiration to get back to it!

Have a wonderful weekend.:D

Hi!

I can relate about the not wanting to walk or run at first. It takes me about 10 minutes of warm up to really get into it. I was ready to quit today - but i finished and ran more than I have yet. So slow and steady I am picking up my running time.

Beth - I'll be at POFQ. First time there, but I was curious to see how the rehab went. Iam so excited that I have been mentally packing for 1 month!

Karebear - I just read what you wrote about 10 minutes of walking. We's be good walking partners!

aNYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ABOUT WHAT COULD BE PUT ON A CD?

Well I am off to PA. My DH father is a commisioner in PA so we have box seats to the NASCAR races tomorrow. I am not a fan but it should bee alot of fun just to see it.

Hey all!

I just wanted to post my workout from yesterday. Saturday is my distance day, and I went five miles in 50 minutes, plus warm up and cool down. It feels good to become stronger. I am telling you, though, that Camelbak does amazing things, I drank 45 ounces of water while I was out there and never felt thirsty, dehydrated or run down once I got home. Look into it.

Karen- I don't know if I posted this or not... I got the Camelbak brand one that goes around your waist, called the Camelbak FlashFlo. It holds 1.4 litres/45 ounces of water. Check it out at www.camelbak.com. It stays very secure and comfortable, and the water was not warm at all at the end of my run, so...keeps it cool about an hour or so? You can put ice in it, but I don't. I would recommend this one because my brother has the kind that takes up your whole back and he says it is just too hot, and too heavy. (I feel like I've posted this before?) I got mine for $24.99. It has room for keys, phones, mace (I carry it while running alone), CD Player, it really is nice tohave. Let me know if you have anyo ther questions. OOH. If you get it, pick up the CamelClip for 1.99, too. It is nice to hook the straw up closer to your mouth so you don't have to tuck it in. That's all!

For those who have sent me their info, I sent out the database/spreadsheet (are these the same things? I thought they were. Maybe it is just a spreadsheet) last night. Let me kow if you didn't get it or if something is wrong. If you haven't sent me your info, I can always update it! Send me your:
DisName
Name
Address
Marathon Weekend Hotel
Dates of Travel
Favorite Color
Favorite Disney Character
Any Misc.

AEG- My wrist size is about 7.5-8 inches, I think. If I measured correctly... I just measured a bracelet that I wear and it was about that size, too. So, I will P.M. you with the info, also. Let me know if you need a more exact size!

Wow, things are really cookin on this board. I know we'll have a new one this week!

OH! One question. For Cheat Free Bears, do you only count it if they're consecutive, or do I just not add the dayst hat I may have accidentally cheated? As in, I cheated two days last week, do I start over now?

CD Suggestions:
There are so many! I will post these ideas later. For now I am supposed to go do laundry.:crazy2:

Have a good day, all!

Ashley

Hey everyone!!

Today is a rest day for me and I am so glad!! Theheat about did me in yesterday!! Then we also hit a homeschool curriculum fair and I was on my feet all day long!! Happy trails to our walkers/ joggers/ and runners today!

Sounds like I'm not the only one who struggles at the beginning of my walk. That you for letting me know I"m not alone!!

Karen, are you stretching really good before your walks? Make sure you do with your hips and back and all. If I don't, my lower back will nag me the whole time. Also, I find if I concentrate on the walk, it is much harder than if I concentrate on moving to the music. Of course my neighbors probably love when I throw in some hand movements, but they will get over it!lol.
Anyway, I don't know if that made sense or not, but I definitely benefit from the upbeat music. I really like my blended CD's and today is my day to add a new song for next week. My CD's will hold about 75 minutes of music, so as I add a song from walk2, I just take off a couple of the slower ones from walk1 since they are about half of the length. Let me know if you'd like me to make them for you. I have plenty of CD's on hand and it would only take me a few minutes. Just PM me your address and I'll get them out on Monday! Also, good for you on losing again!! I'm in my hold steady mode again. <grrrrrrr>

Tammy, welcome back!! Let us know how your workouts go this week!! Starting back can be so hard, but keep your eye on next January!

Krista- POFQ looks great. We've never stayed there. Last December we were at POR. This year I'm hoping to upgrade to Coronado when the FL resident rates come out for our December trip. We've hit the age that our resort choice is governed by the length of the water slide! We're doing an intensive year on world geography so I'm hoping that the CSR will make an impression on the kids!!lol. Does it sound like I'm justifying a trip to Disney?? BTW, I bought ready made CDs that I'm having to modify, but they give me the beats per minute and so I can see how fast the songs are. Anyway to find that out on other songs other than counting the beats??

Ashley, thanks for the info on the camel back. I may check that out on our next trip to town. Also, I just PM'd you with my info. (finally!)

Have a great day everyone!!

Hi Everbody!
I haven't got lost (well, maybe a little), but it a busy time of year for me right now. . . .and MY computer has corrupt files--ie. NO internet.

I've gone to physio and am doing exercises on my knee. She even gave me permission to do one Curves lower body machine (but I did 2, since both are equivalent to the exercises that I am doing). I should be assessed for an orthotic this week, and that should help.

My magazine came, and I don't remember if I pm'd to say thank you! THANK YOU! It's really cool to see the ad, and it will help to keep me focused on getting better, getting trained and getting there!!!

Another busy week or two, but I'll try to drop in earlier this next week. Have a good one, everyone!

Hi All you wonderful ladies:wave2:

Today I rested, tired from a 2.5 walk yesterday & then walked the boardwalk for a few hours.

Beth I would love a cd! All my info should be in Ashley's database. Thanks! Could you also tell me how to burn my own cds? I tried this weekend to download some upbeat songs & I got nothing:mad: Very frustrating and I'm sure it is not all that hard.

Thanks Bev - my wrist is a 6.5, at least for today;) And way to go on the 8 miler - wahoo you are my hero!

See you on next week's thread:sunny:

Hello!

Today I went to PA for the NACAR races. NEVER AGAIN. ALthough it was fun for the first uhhh ... 2 minutes it gets rather monotonous. We were there from 12:00 to about 4:30 and it was freezing. The one good thing was that there was a ton of walking involved (going to and from the parking lot).

Beth - thanks for the info about POFQ. My fav is still Old Key West but it's too pricey to go with just 5 people. PLus the idea of sharing a room isn't as appealing as when I was younger.

I have a walking CD it consist of dance music - but I need a new one. (excuse to go shopping:hyper: )

Well tomorrow will be a good excercise day - cool. See you all tomorrow!

Krista

ibouncetoo sneaks in the back door hoping no one noticed her absence........

OK, after my nasty cold, that had me down for days, everything (health care wise) has gone to heck in a handbasket.
But, I"M BAAAAAAAAAACK! Did major grocery shopping today, so I'm supplied with all the proper foods. Did a nice long, slow and easy 2.5 mile walk today and I'm ready to re-focus! (Won't mention the chocolate related incidences of the past few weeks.)

So, did I miss anything? I saw LittleMissMickey's post about info for a spreadsheet and will PM that to her. Are you looking for info just from 'us' or for all Dis marathoners? Also will PM AEGrammy with wrist measurement

I'm going to go hunt down the previous marathon training threads to catch up....but it may take me a while.

Also.....someone is staying at POFQ soon, Kris, I think?.(Sorry I was skimming posts, will go back to get caught up on everyone) You'll love it. I was there in April and really enjoyed it. Loved taking the boat to DTD, the walk along the river to Riverside is beautiful and it only takes minutes to get anywhere in the resort. I'd go back there anytime.

***Do have one question perhaps you all can answer before I catch up on posts****
....Do we have a number to call yet to actually book/pay for our rooms? Haven't received any e-mails on it but I get sooooo much spam I was afraid perhaps I had deleted it. Thanks!

One final bit of news....my annual review is later this month, and I'm planning on spending my raise (she says with full confidence that it will be enough) on joining Curves....or it's competitor that I can't remember the name of at this exact moment. Will be checking them both out for $$ and contract commitments. I did a 'test' week at Curves last fall and enjoyed it, but the other place is closer ...I could actually walk there as my warm up and home as my cool down.::yes::

I'm planning on checking in DAILY...as that seems to be the only way to keep me focused.
