Marathon Training Thread for the Week of 6/7-6/14

MAN! Catching up with you ladies is TOUGH WORK! I did a 55 min training workout yesterday, at it was great! It was really cold down by the lake iwth HUGE waves, but I went out in my little blue running shorts and got it done. At times like that, I realize that I do have willpower! Then my mom made me a Belgian waffle.. She is determined to make me fat! She tries to help, though, too. I just love her and her contradictions.

Today, I am counting playing frisbee for an hour as my cross-training. I am just too tired to do pilates at 10:26 p.m. after working for 13 hours. (I nanny, I will be playing lots of frisbee this summer)

By the way, I am disgusted at what kids eat these days!! I had to force them to eat a banana before karate practice. For breakfast they had marshmallow cereal with EXTRA SUGAR. Lunch: Grilled cheese sandwich on white iwth potato chips. Dinner: A CINNAMON ROLL. It was gross. I don't know what I will do for food. I brought my own cereal, but for lunch it seems that hot dogs and bologna are my only options for the rest of the week.

Anyway, I gotta go. Will be doing some strength training tomorrow, and maybe I will try ot do today's pilates video, too. We'll see how ambitious we are.

Ashley:wave2:

ok -- Ashley -- time to speak up! What is this mother feeding her children!!!! She obviously doesn't realize just how much better they will feel and more energized too! Do they have trouble getting going in the morning? i would bet so. do it for yours, and the kids, health! and ok kids won't make big changes easy, so maybe healthy choice hot dogs, low fat bologna -- their menu made my tummy hurt!

kris-congrats on your gift of weights! what a sweet DH!

just in from my Wed jog -- we did our usual for the week, but I pushed myself and run the 3.5 (ish) miles in 38 (ish) mins. My DN told me in her own sweet way that I was letting myself slow down. I think I started out being overwhelmed by the time/distance to go and just putted along. It was tougher today but I feel great for doing so! We walked about .75 warm--up and a little over a mile home - so 5.5 (ish) total. That's the other thing -- i'm leaving my watch at home now. I get too wrapped up in it and now we are jogging straight I don't really need it

off to do 10 mins ab pilates and some yoga then hit the shower. we have a big day ahead of us. My DD has an opthamologist appt this afternoon for some double-vision she has been having, when you read this say a prayer for her please. thanks!

Hi everyone!!

Sorry I've been in-comunicado lately - have been in a 2 day training class (off site) with no access to DIS.....it's been a hard 2 days!! :D

But I'm now back at home, and just finished 2 miles on the TM.

I don't even remember when/what I posted last, so I'll just say:

Way to go everyone....keep up the great work!!

At this time, 7 months from today we'll be done with the marathon, and colapsed by now (at least I will be!!)

Have a great day!

Just wanted to drop in here and say hi. :wave2: While I'm unfortunately not going to be running in the marathon, I'm training for a 5K in the fall and considering last year I could run maybe from the front door to the car :teeth: it's been quite an undertaking. I'm about 1/2 way through the Couch to 5K program and just wanted to say how much motivation I get from reading all of your posts. You all are doing so great and I wish you much luck in your goals!! ::yes::

Okay, once again it was tmilling and Curves tonight. I was having a hard time getting it going today - did 2 miles this AM and did a concentrated effort at Curves so I am okay.

My knee is bothersome (sounds so much better that "hurts") so I think I will do Jane Fonda weights in the AM - off to dinner tomorrow evening so will miss that session.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Ashley - did you try talking to the mom yet? she doesn't even know what a "treasure" she has in you! Maybe you and the kids could do the food shopping - I don't mean to put another responsiblity on you -but hey then you could introduce some Kashi waffles, cereal, etc. Bet you could even try some soy chicken nuggets and they wouldn't know the difference when they smother them with ketchup ;) Hope that it is a situation that is resolved soon for you!

Hi everyone!

Eric (my DH) and I went for a walk today because the North East has experienced a rough heat wave the past two days. I teach and at 9:00 in the morning I was sweating. The poor kids wer hot too. I was so exhausted that I slept for 1 hour when I got home then went for a walk, I tried to jog for a few minutes but the air was so heavy!

Kayeand Jim - it's nice to have you around. Good luck with the 5K!

Mishoe - I can't believe the marathon in 7 months away! We can do it! Nothing to it!

Ashley - Did you get a chance to talk to the Mom yet? Children wil eat what is given to them. You could be a great lesson to them!

Good luck tomorrow ladies!

Krista:teeth:

I did my 1 mile on the tm today. Was supposed to do 2 , but my body is so tired for some reason. Tommorrow morning, I will do teh 2 miles and then I'll be where I'm supposed to be.

Ashley- as hard as it is- you really do need to talk to that "mom"! Is she aware of what her kids eat? That really sounds yucky- sweet cereal and the they ADD more sugar- UGH!!!!

Krista- way to beat the heat- go in the AM! I remember those days when we'd be in school and it would be soooo hot and humid! Too bad there's no AC in your school.

Grammy- I'm having a hard time gettimng into it today as well. I think it's because I watched Pres. Reagan's Funeral on TV. Did nayone else see it? It was very somber and very sad- and it reminded me of my dad's funeral 2 years ago- I cried pretty much all afternoon!

KayandJim00- that's is great that you are training for a 5K! We love to have lots of people here- training for whatever they're training for. Please feel free to post again.

Monica- 2 days without the Dis?!?!?! ARE YOU OK????? I hadn't tought too much about the date today- but indeed you are right! 7 months from now- and all of us had better be done with the 1/2 !! WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

baileymouse- PLEASE ......... get that knee checked! We really want to see you there participating in Jan!

Krista- pedometers are really touchy. I have to actually hold mine in my hand for it to work! I'm not really sure what else to do to make it work correctly either. Good work out!

Beth- at least you tried! You DID get out of bed and then waited fro your sister. Next time- you need to wake her up. If you sacrifice- she can to!!

Oh my!!! I got up this morning and came right here to read the thread and noone has posted yet!!!! You guys have spoiled me by always having something new every morning when I get here- I miss you all this morning!

So- I guess it'll be my turn to start today- and even though I don't have any excercise news to give you yet, I'll give you a great little quote from a teeny tiny book about quote's by women. Here it is:

The thing women have got to learn is that nobody gives you power. You just take it.

SO- let's go out today and grab that powert and move ourselves into a better place today ladies!!

hey karebear!

Thanks for the upbeat messages! I know what you mean about coming here and not having anything to read! S0 thank you!

Today we had a field day. We went to the park and had races and then finished off the day at the Rainforest Cafe! Everytime I go in there it reminds me of Disney. I think it's the moist smell and the AC.

No running for me today - although I did excercise with the students. I am going to go for 4 miles tomorrow. WE'll see!

Also, Karebear I am going to try to hold the pedometer to see if that helps.

Enjoy tonight

Krista

Sounds like you had a fun day Krista- I wish I could go to the Rain Forest Cafe - just so I could be reminded of WDW too! I did 2 miles today on the treadmill. It's been pretty gray and wet here for the last 3 -4 days or so- and really cool. the high today was 65! It's hard keepingup with school kids- good for you!

Hi everyone!!

I wish our temps here were 65--I'd love that!! But of course not - on my way home they said it was 88 (but not sure what it feels like). Thunderstorms are on their way in, and we've already had some rain.

I went outside for a walk today (after the rains paused for a little bit), and did terribubly! I didn't even make 1 mile (0.80) in a half hour...yuck!! I actually started having shin pain (I guess shin splints) almost right off - but not just in front, on the sides too. I tredged on, but then I decided I wanted to go home. I joked to myself that I should have flagged my sister down in her van when she passed me....it's a good thing she didn't even notice me walking :D .

Does anyone have any recommedations/suggestions to avoid this pain?? This is even wearing my "good marathon" shoes!! HELP PLEASE!!!

I originally thought I would do some more tonight on the TM - but now, no guarantees - will wait and see how my legs feel. Did do some good stretches once I got home.

Hope you guys had better luck!!

BTW - I agree with Krista and Karen, I love coming here to read everything!

Hi everyone!! I had phone problems and was offline for a bit, but thank goodness the phone man came and hooked me up again!!lol. Seems like it's always something with the phones here at our house!

I skipped exercise yesterday (Wednesday) but today, I managed to drag myself out about 5:30 and I walked 2 miles and then in the noon heat while the kids were at swim lessons, I walked the trail for another 2 miles. IF I can do that a couple times a week during swim season, maybe I can up my speed or time by the fall. Am I accomplishing anything with a "split" exercise program?

Ok...and another question...someone give me the short answer to water vs. sports drinks. What should we be doing?? I'm a water addict but a friend told me I need to be drinking something else....

Krista, Mmmmmmmmmmm. Rainforest Cafe. We always do that on our Disney trips. Can't wait!

Karen, very true about power. Good quote!

Grammy- watch your knee at Curves. I can't remember which machine it was, but there was one that really aggravated one of my knees.

kayandjim- your post is very motivating to me!! Couch to 5K. You go girl!! I'm a walker and not sure I will ever be any more than that, but I do walk. ::yes::

Monica, I had missed that it was just 7 months to it be OVER. You are so right!

ohMom, how was DD's appt with the Dr? Let us know.

Baileymouse, I read your post on another thread about your WLS. You are awesome. Great job!

Have a good day everyone!!

~~Beth

Congratulations on your 2 miles Karen! I wish I had a treadmill, sometimes I just don't want to go outside.
Mishoe - It's just good that you even got out and walked. I used to get shin splints - but I do a lot of shin exercise before I exercise. I push one of my feet up to a wall by bending my toes back against the wall andbending towards my calf.
They really kill!
I am contemplating walking now - I have a lot of energy and it just rained so it's very cool out.
I'll let you know>

:Pinkbounc :bounce: ::yes::

Hi all:wave:

Great job Karen & Beth!

Sorry to hear about shinsplits Monica, try those stretches first, you'll be back where you were soon enough.

It has been unbearably hot here so I did not walk for the last 2 days, but gardened. I figure all the carrying of huge mulch bags from the front to the back of the house & all the squatting should count for crosstraining;) We now have a nice little pond & a back swing to sit and enjoy it, yeah:Pinkbounc

Today walked a little over 4 miles in the park-felt great ready for tomorrow:sunny:

Thanks Ashley for the notecard-very inspiring:wave2: Did you talk to the 'mom'? what are her eating habits like? maybe you canleave a few hints around the house & bring some healthy snacks with you.

Onto Friday - TGIF!

Hey Guys! I'm sorry I've not been around much, I'm adjusting to the new summer schedule.

I just got back from a 55 minute training workout (5 miles). Windy day here! There's a storm blowing in, it seems, the lake was really rough. Hooray for negative splits! I love what the wind can do.

I used my Camelbak for the first time today, and would recommend it to anyone who is going to be exercising for more than 40 minutes or so. It hugs really nice and tight so it doesn't bounce around a lot or anything. I got the one that goes around your waist that was designed for runners (the others cover your whole back and can get very hot and heavy). Try it out, all!

Finally got the blister on my heel to go away. YAY!

Thanks for all the advice on my unhealthy food issue. I have brought some of my own things over, and I think she was a little taken aback because I needed to ask where I could keep it. She's very nice, but they are a very "instant-society" family. No meal takes longer than say, 15 minutes to prepare in their house. I also mentioned that the kids tell me "NO" when I tell them they need to eat vegetables with their meals and she laid down the law. We'll see how their fridge transforms over the course of the summer. This is my experiment!

Thank you all for posting such amazing, motivating messages. I look forward to reading on here each and every day, you all really make me SMILE!!! :D :teeth: :hyper: I didn't post a quote this week, but I really like the one that Karen put up.

Please keep sending me your information, everybody that I haven't heard from yet! See the training thread from last week, the very first post on there, if you are unsure as to what this is. I have more and more things that I would love to send to all of you! I have nothing to do for the first few hours I'm at work except think of you and this marathon. And read a good book or two, but, I am so focused right now!

Thanks again, everybody, and keep up the SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS work!

Ashley:wave2:

Today is my "off" day for my training, so I'm just taking it easy! I'll be exercising vicariously through all of you so do a few extra laps or minutes today for me!! lol. I want to read about lots of miles and minutes today, Ok? So...go out there and hit the trail!!

Be sure and read Bailymouse's post about her 1 year anniversary for her WLS. She looks great!! Check out those collar bones!

Happy trails to all of you!

~~Beth

Just a quick Hi to my fellow marathoners  frome me today. I am BUSY doimg laundry and packing today. We leave for our week on Hilto Head Island tomorrow!
Yesterday I did manage to fit in my 3 mile walk/jog. Was back to the treadmill because the heat we were having earlier in the week is gone again, yesterdat was 60 and very rainy and today it is raining again. I am hoping to squeeze in a little time on the treadmill at sometime today, we'll see.

I will miss reading this thread next week. You ladies are all so very inspiring to me to keep at this! Have a great week everyone!

I want to mail you a little surprise (bet you could NEVER guess what it might be) :teeth: Just a little something that will remind us we are doing this together.

So anyone that is training for the 2005 WISH marathon with us - send me your info - thanks
