Marathon Training Thread for May 24.....

Hi everyone

Things have still been very busy here so I still haven't been able to get to the computer much. DD only has 8 more days of school left and then I am hoping things will be less hectic again!!

I did my treadmill walk/jog this morning and I made it 3 miles in 45 min.! That is including my 5 min. warm up and 5 min. cool down, so that means that for 35 min I was going between 4mph (walking) and 4.7 mph(jogging). This is the first time I have been able to do the 3 miles in 45 min. so it just goes to prove the longer we all keep at it the faster we'll get and the further we will be able to go! My ankle is feeling good so I am going to start working on increasing my jogging and the length of time I spend on the treadmill again.

I am still trying to loose some weight too. I have 10 pounds to go to make my goal and I am hoping that will be soon but the weight just is not coming off much. I seem to keep losing and regaining the same few pounds. I need to get really serious about watching what I eat yet again!

Karen Congratulations on the weight loss and the new clippie :D That is so wonderful! Keep up the great work! I hope you are feeling better so you can keep walking and keep up that momentum :D :bounce: :bounce:

Beth I have a few friends and family memebers thatI feel like are trying to sabotage me with food. They are always trying to get me to eat things that I have been trying very hard to stay away from and 1 friend in particualr won't eat things that aren't on her diet but will give the rest of us when we're out a hard time if we don't want to eat something. It can be very frustrating! Just remeber you are the one that is doing something good for yourself and don't let anyone else get you down or sabotage you!

Jody and Vija Welcome to the training! Vija that is so nice of you to train along with Jody and the rest of us! We will miss you in Jan. but it is nice to know that you will be there in spirit routing for us. Jody I started a log of miles when I started treadmilling in Feb. and I totaled it up to see how far I have gone so far. I have only walked 121 miles since Feb. I live 1300 miles from WDW so don't think I'll be able to walk that far before Jan., but as I continue to train my miles per workout will keep increasing so it will be interesting to see how far I actually do walk by then.

ohMom and Grammy Welcome back from Vegas. It sounds like you had a great time! Good for you both for jumping right back into the training!

Ashley I think the database with our info sounds great if you don't mind putting it together! It would be a nice way to get to know everyone before Jan. I'll PM you with my info in the next few days. Would it still be possible for me to get a copy of the training plans you mentioned? Oh, and here's that pixie dust

:wizard: :wizard: to get you motivated again!

Have a good Thursday everyone  :sunny:

Cheryl

Good am all!
I walked 1.8 miles yesterday, thought it would be 2 but pedometer tells the truth, right;) Trying to add a bit to the neighborhood walk, the cul de sacs and such.

Welcome Jodi, where in PA are you from?

I'll pm you Ashley, love the database. Sorry to hear of your struggles but your new commitment plan sounds like a winner:wave:

Dear Beth, so sorry to hear of the hecklers. Yu will have the last laugh and for now just give them a wave while you mutter sweet nothings under your breathe;)

Karen sorry to hear you are not feeling well, your pedicure will surely raise your spirits. I'd like to lose between 25-35 lbs. Over the winter I lost my focus but now with all of you Wishers I'm recommitted, so thanks for the help:wave2:

Oh my! having a few days off seems to have lengthened my stride a little. For the first time EVER I finished 1 mile in under 20 mins! I finished in 19:56- OK- it's barely under 20, but it's inder 20! :p I walked on the treadmill again this morning- but even after 20 mins fight boredom! I gotta do somethingabout that. We are all gonna have to come up with a plan to help each othehr out with this boredom problem since it seems as though we all share in it! On thing I am trying to do is visualize myself actually crossing the marathon line . It's really kinda fun- becasue I talk myself into believing Mickey's there to give me a big congratualtory hug.... along with all my WISHWalker friends! The end of the marathon is easy to visualize- but I really think I'm gonna have to wokr on visualizing the hard middle part!

yesterday while I was at the dietician's she was telling me she walked a half marathon..... ONCE. She said that she has always been walker- at least 2-3 miles a day. Well- she has a friend that a marathon runner , and this friend asked her if she would like to do the half marathon walk with her for cancer. Well- of course she said yes. I had to laugh out loud as she told me come mile 10 she almost sat down and had her friend go get the car to pick her up! She said her kness we killing her and she could barely move her legs! Well- she finished the walk, but said she went home and sat in an easy chair for 6 hours while her legs ached from her ordeal! And she's never done another one again! She said when her friend asked her to do the walk with her, it was like 2 weeks before it was to happen! Anyway- I was so glad she told me this story- because this is typical me.... waiting until the last minute to train- and then almost dying while attempting to complete the race! I guess the moral of the story is- IT'S NEVER TO EARLY TO START TRAINING FOR THE MARATHON!!!!

Maryellen- good for you for completeing the 1.8 miles. You'll be at that 2.00 in no time- without even noticing you're there. I guess you could always say the p[edometer doesn't lie- but I like to believe mine does , at least when it comes short of where I think it should be! :teeth:

Cheryl- 3 miles in 45 is fantastic! That is just the beginning of where you will be come January. You will be ready for sure! Isn't that an exciting thought!

Ashley- we're all a little scattered brained every now and again! What's important is taht you are back on track now. Actually- you were never really off track, you still had your moments when you thought and did something about the marathon. I like your "getting back to business" attitude- it will help you to accomplish your marathon goal. I would love a copy of the info on everyone- I'll pm you with my info soon.

Well- I hope everyone has sa productive day today- get out there and do something good for yourselves!

Hello everyone!! Been busy and never got a chance to check in yesterday! Took today off and yesterday I only walked 35 minutes, but I did change my path. Tomorrow will be better.

Debbie, I always reach out to people with food. For anyone who is a weightwatcher, I calculated my cookie recipe points and ONE cookie is SEVEN points, so I figure I need to really watch those. I always give food for any occasion, and I'm trying hard to change that....although I do love cooking and everything that goes along with it....Sounds like you need a little slower time with the knee. I hope you show much improvement in the next couple of weeks!! OUCH!!

ohMom, welcome home, glad you ahd a great trip!! Thanks for the encouragment!! Good for you on coming back with some pocket money!!

Grammy- glad you were a winner! my mom is like that, too. Last summer she even won a corvette...but took the cash prize instead.

::yes::

Karen, wonderful treat with the pedicure!! Great idea! Good advice on the hecklers. Unfortunately one is my mother and she doesn't play by the same rules....
 But...regardless. I am on a quest and I will reach my destination. And, I'm on target with you as far as the weight loss. I also have 90-ish pounds to lose. Wish it was still coming off like it did at first, but I will win in the long run!! We can do it, Karen! Congrats on shortening your time today!! Under 20! I did like the dietician's half marathon story, too!

::yes::

Ashley, good for you on the recommittment. It will be easier when you actually do move and you are not there in vacation mode. Thanks for the quote. I CAN fly.

:D

Cheryl, sounds like you training is going great!! There's a lady at our church that goes between bringing brownies and then the next time she is critical of anyone else bringing sweets for special things. I don't want to feel like someone is pushing me to indulge and then evaluating me, too!! you know?

Meme, I do laugh at my hecklers. They are "porch-sitters" and I know walking 1/2 a block would tire them out. I picture them chasing me and me running far far away and they never can catch me. It's a good mental image for me. Maybe not the chasing part, but the not being caught part!

Ok...that's it. Gotta go finish up some school work with the kidlets. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning, everyone! The knee continues to be bothersome. In fact, it is hurting more now than before :sad2: even with the ibuprofen. I am keeping my spirits up, though, and trying to get the 10 000 steps in with just my daily routine (I can usually get between 5 000 and 7 000 without thinking)

Karen, I had lost 65 pounds in @ 9-10 months. Stabilized there for Dec. Jan. Feb., but have gained @ 10 pounds since then. I'm back (kind of) to recording on Fitday , and that should help. I know that that is what I need to do. I started about 100 pounds overweight, so I'm more than half way there. Actually, I'd LOVE to lose enough to get me a 75 pound clippie. [short term goal that I've had for a l-o-o-o-n-n-ng-g-g time!] And I guess, since I'm having this knee thing, that I need to remove my exercise clippie. :)

Beth, glad to hear that you are not letting others get you down. And I didn't know that 1 cookie=7 points. :( I'll be a little more vigilant on those things now. lol I'm sorry that your mom is one of the hecklers. I'm proud of you for overcoming that barrier. It's a tough one!

Welcome back to the trippers! Sounds like a good time. MY mom and I are going to Europe in July, and once I get through this month of reports, concerts, birthday parties etc. I'll be able to get excited about that!

Ashley and Cheryl...I'm energized because of your posts. Thanks.

Now, I'd better get off the 'puter and get to work!

Take care, everyone!

Just put ONE foot in front of the OTHER....and soon you'll be walking out that do-o-o-or.
:teleport:

Good morning everyone!

I've been a slacker these last 2 days - Wed on purpose (decided to have that be my night off). Last night my sister called me just as I was getting off the couch to get onto the TM - asking me to come watch my nephew so she could go to the Mall to get his glasses fixed (frames broke). SO - I didn't get back until about 945pm, and was pooped so didn't do anything.

I WILL do something tonight!!!

Hope everyone has a good day, and a great Memorial Day weekend.

g'morning all :)

today I got my walk/jog intervals done -- around 5 miles. My shins HURT sooooo bad the first jogging mile, omgosh. then we switched to walking and the pain worsened to the point of I felt like I had lost my footing. I walked through it and slowed down a bit on the next session and jogged 20 mins. My DN thought it may be from walking in Vegas in my sandals? i don't know. I was going to run tomorrow but now I'm not. I'll try to get in some walking this weekend though

monica -- no more slacking!!!!!!!

karebear -- congrats on your making another mini-goal -- soon you'll be hitting 18 mins than 17................

have a great day all!!

Morning marathoners! Got in 1:09 walk this morning. I need to start wearing the pedometer again, but maybe I'll get in the van later and clock the distance. Saturday is usually my long walk so stay tuned. Feels good to be back on track. ::yes::

I figured out how to deal with my hecklers. If you can't beat them, join them, right? So first thing I said was, "you know you should be out here walking, too!!" then later I said if you're not up to walking, you can at least cheer and hand me water at the curb. lol. That made'm be quiet or disappear!! So...I feel like I had a personal victory with that today. Gives me power for the next time. :jester:

Monica, sorry you didn't get your TM time yesterday. I have to get out early or I knw too much life will come my way and it just won't happen. Good luck today! :cheer2:

ohMom- ouch on the shin splints. I get them if I've worn anything other than my athletic shoes for a long period. i'd bet it was the sandals. ::yes::

Have a great day all!! Drink an extra glass of water today! :drinking:

So. you killed 'em with kindness huh!?!?!? I should've thought of that! :teeth: WTG Beth!

Haven't been doing as much as I like to with the walking, but i know I'm getting quicker. If I don't stop between work and the light rail station I can make it there for the earlier train, which means I'm definitely going faster, lol.

I have to get back onto the track in the park but I'm still having some right knee issues. I bought a pair of really great New Balance cross trainers. I never did get the shoes from the red cross promotion, although Mom got hers and DH got his.

I'll keep moving!

YEAH BETH! Love what you said- you go girl:bounce: :bounce:

Walked 2.3 miles and then another .5 last night. Need to keep adding to the neighborhood loop to increase distances. Blister on heel returned, wore different socks. Looks like I'll need to buy more cool max socks;)

Congrats Karen on the timing progress!
And sorry to all of you with the knee problems - getyour rest and you'll be back in the game soon enough.

Hi marathoners

Yesterday I only had time to do my Pilates tape in the morning. I always feel so good and stretched out after that and it still amazes me how much of a sweat I work up doing a 20 min. tape so it must be doing some good. I also went on a field trip with DDs class to our state capitol and we did alot of walking but it wasn't fast walking at all. Spending the whole day with 42 4th and 5th graders wore me out and I slept through my first alarm this morning so today became a reat day. I plan on getting in some good treadmilling over the long weekend and I also want to get alot of yard work and hosework done.

Today I scanned a patient (I'm an ultrasound tech) and we were talking and she told me she is walking the 1/2 marathon in the San Diego Rock 'N Roll Marathon next weekend. She was a bigger lady and started her training in Jan. and her "coach" says she'll have no problem finishing. It was so good to talk to her and I told her about the WDW 1/2 marathon so we were encouraging each other. She said you just have to be consistent with your walking to keep adding speed and distance. Now remeber everyone she started her training in Jan., so she trained for 6 months, we still have 7 months left to train and we have some training in already so WE WILL BE READY too!!!!

Karen Way to go on getting in a mile under 20 minutes!!! Keep up the walking and soon you'll shave of yet anothe minute!

Debbie If you are still being active to the best of your ability right now because of your knee don't you think you can keep the exercise clippie? You've worked so hard for it and you're doing what your body will allow right now!

Monica Life sure does get in the way of exercise sometimes doesn't it. I hope you made it to get something in tonight like you planned.

ohMom Have you been stretching? I know when I first started walking faster and jogging my shins would really hurt but then someone told me how important stretching really good after walking or jogging is because your muscles are good and warm then. Now I make suure to allow enough time after my cooldown to really stretch especially my shins and it has helped immensely. I hope your shins get to feeling better quickly!

Beth I love the way you handled your hecklers ;) You showed them!

Baileymouse Great job with walking quicker! Keep it up!

MeMe I LOVE my cool max socks too! They make the world of diference for me for blister prevention! I have had to buy some more pairs too and I am going to make sure I have some good ones for the marathon.

Have a good Sat. everyone! Hopefully we will all get in some good walks this weekend! :sunny:

Cheryl :wave2:

cheryl you are probably making a good point I need to hear-- I do stretch - usually do yoga after my jog/walk intervals days, but I'm sure i should incorporate more immediate stretching when finishing my workout. hey - i'm a registered RT (R)(M) -- not working now but considering returning in the fall -- it's a small world

you're right in that we need to adjust our thinking that marathons are not just for the "typical" jogging bod we all think of. my DN that is my jogging partner has completed marathons at a very impressive pace and she is 40 lbs heavier than me. i'm not a twig either ;)

i'm going to have to get some cool max socks -- i now have a blisterish thing on my big toe callus -- can't wait to see podiatrist again this coming friday

TTFN

Just a quick note on blisters...

I read that in order to avoid blisters, if your feet just have that tendency, put Vaseline on them in the evening and then put your tootsies into some socks. It said to do this the week before the marathon for blister-free feet afterwards, but I'm sure you could try it earlier in the game!

Gotta run! Minnesota might actually beat the Lakers again! Wahoo!

Ashley

Hey Wish Walkers!!!

I have got to lose 40 pounds before the marathon...so I'm officially jumping back in...I have been absent due to my husband relocating to another state and trying to sell the house....We've got 80% of the house packed up...listed with an agent and now can focus on my diet/exercise. The bad news is I can't walk except on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays (the days my husband is home)...and this week I haven't walked but spent 8 hours gardening, mulching, planting annuals, trimming hedges for our open house today. Now I've got to vacuum/dust all day and go buy 5 more bags of mulch before the open house starts today...

But I plan on walking tomorrow morning (he's off the holiday) and I do 4 miles each time I do walk. I'm working on my time. I just hope that's enough to get me ready for the marathon...it looks like we're going to build a house in Huntsville which means we'll have to rent an apartment for 6 months...we'll be moving in just 2-3 weeks before the marathon...so it concerns me that with all the moving my body won't be trained for the marathon...ugh, I can't think about that now...but I think these last 40 pounds will get me in top shape and I am dedicated to losing those.
There, that's my confession and I'm signing back on to encourage all you WISH walkers to keep the faith and drink your water...we can do this!
Tara

That 4 mile day ought to be interesting!

Yesterday I got in a 5 mile walk/jog in 75 min. so I am still able to maintain my 15 min/mile average including my warm up and cool down. I am still jogging for short intervals spaced inbetween the walking. Yesterday I alternated 2 minutes of jogging and then 3 minutes of walking until I had done a total of 20 min. jogging and then I walked the rest at the 4mph pace until the cooldown. Then it stopped raining for a little while so we did get some yard work in too. Today I wanted to rest my legs a little so I did my Pilates tape and an upper body segment from 1 of my FIRM tapes. Tomorrow I am planning on 5 miles on the treadmill again.

Tara Welcome back! Wow it sounds like you have had alot keeping you busy!! All that yard work is great exercise! Great job walking the 4 miles when you can get it in! Good luck with selling your house, building the house and the upcoming moves! It certainly sounds like you will definitely be active! Just try and walk whenever you get the chance.

Have a great Memorial Day everyone :sunny:

Cheryl
