Marathon Training Thread for 12/5-12/12

I just got an update from one of the team in training coaches as far as eating suggestions for event weekend.

Friday should be your "carbo load day" day--this is the day where you have your BIG meal--why? Because it takes 24 hours to digest those carbs into something you can use--your meal on Saturday night should be a light meal.

They suggested eating "Power bar" type stuff on Saturday--I don't know what this means--to this day--I have done "healthy" eating on the day before a big one--not sure if marathon weekend would be the time to change it up and have cereal bars all day.

Doing 20 miles on Saturday--yes, you read write--the BIG 2-0. I'm going to go prepare my ice block cups right now ;)

Hmmmmmm. perhaps I should head straight to Boma Friday!:D

Today was a crosstraining day for me, lite weights with Denise Austin. I hope it stops raining here by morning so I can get outside and get my walk in tomorrow. It has been very grey here lately and if all the rain we've been having had been snow we'd be buried in it so I am grateful that it is rain.

Have a good training weekend evryone!! We are getting so very close now! The other day at work I mentioned to my friend who is walking with me "in 4 weeks at this time we will be eating lunch at the Crystal Palace" it's hard to believe that in only 4 weeks we'll be at WDW.

Cheryl

Up bright and early to do my 20 miles today...no aches and pains--no aches and pains--no aches and pains!

Bye!

Up early here too - I am waiting to do my 7 in the daylight (oh what a smart woman I was to realize that I couldn't do the full marathon - doing 20 miles for practice would be way too much for this mmmm - "older" woman!) Weather here is wind chill 23 and light snow -I am going out - gotta get some time outdoors - who knows what Jan in WDW will be this year! I hear you team Canada, decaff38 and Cheryl N WI - you know this weather too - ah - the 40's in January at WDW will seem so wonderful :earboy2:

Lisa you are a real inspiration and WISHing you the best today and NO aches and pains!

Ibounce - Molli and I may just be at Boma's too on Friday, when she reads - that is the carb load day - one could get it done at Boma's for sure!

Still not light out so off to do some chores - will be glad when my walk is finished and I am tucked back in the warm house today!

Good luck to all who are training today and if you are resting - ah that sounds so nice - enjoy!

Well, I have decided that I am going to rest this weekend, except for stretching out my body-knee on one side, hip/thigh on the other,- loaded with ibuprofen. I'm also thinking that I have not been getting enough protein, especially after those longer walks. I'm going to really watch that for the next four weeks. I usually eat "good" carbs (does popcorn count?) so that is under control. I might just eventually haul out the WATP tapes, too, but I'll be starting with the 1 mile as I move from the 'rest' state. So, I have my plan of attack!

Keep working everyone! Slowly but surely, we are headed to the start line of a ½ Marathon! Just put one foot in front of the other! We can do it!

I finished my 6 miles this morning only to read Lisa's doing 20! Wow! No aches -n- pains wishes for you, Lisa. Hope it went well. Is this your last long run before race day? We are doing 11 Wednesday and 12 the next week, then taper. I heard to carbo-load Friday, too, which will be tricky for me. We are getting in around 5:00 Friday which means 6:30 by the time we are through with check-in (hopefully). I'm not sure my friend will want to buy a park ticket just for dinner. We are going to be at BWI. Any good ideas for a later dinner that night? Boardwalk area carbs, anyone? or head to Boma? Trying to find some Italian NOT in the parks.....

Another week down! Only 4 weeks to race weekend :) Good luck, everyone!

Karebear, how are your shins? I need to go back and read....

I got up early and headed to the mall to walk this morning. I planned on walking at least 7 miles, but had to quit at 5. I was feeling really good, except for my feet. I had Goldtoe dry wick socks on that I had worn before without any problems, but today I got huge painful blisters on my toes. I'm taking it easy today hoping that they feel better by monday and I can walk again.

On the plus side, my time is really improving. My first two miles are still slow and stiff, but after I warm up I'm averaging around 15 minute miles. I also decided that I HATE wearing my fanny pack. I'll look a little bit for a more comfortable pack, but I think I'll probably end up sewing a few small pockets on my walking pants.

Well, I'm off to research preschool integration laws and theory. It's really sad when people who own/run a special needs preschool have no clue what the purpose of early childhood integration is. Sometimes I think they look at DS and his classmates as dollar signs instead of children.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Dawn

I had planned on a one hour stroll today, but decided to get my long walk out of the way. I'm happy to say that I walked 9 miles in 2 hours, 15 minutes and then walked a half-mile more in cool-down mode. I'm reallly pleased with my time because I was wearing a fairly heavy fleece-lined rain coat. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Can you believe that Christmas is in two weeks??

I think there is a yummy Italian Restaurant on the boardwalk--I totally recommend that :)

Just got home and I'm FREEZIING!!! MaryLiz and I did 7 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes. We didn't really push it because it's been a while since I've done a long walk. Like Bev said it is cold here too!! About 22 with the wind chill. I know that 40 in Florida will seem like summer to us. I'm going to try and do some more stride drills this week to try and strengthen my legs.

Christmas Day we're scheduled to do a 10 mile. I guess the guys will be doing the dishes hey, Nancy, Debbie and MaryLiz. We may push it off to boxing day (the 26th).
Have a super day everyone. Now I've got to get a turkey supper ready because my in-laws are coming today for Christmas because they leave on Wednesday for Nashville to spend Christmas with my BIL and his family. I wish I was going south for Christmas. Stay away snow!!

Can I just say...

waaaaaahhhhh!!!!

I am ready to cry and I just want my mommy.

My 20 miler did not go as expected--but now I know what to expect and what to work around.

On the good side:
**I FINISHED--in 4:05 even.
**My calf is behaving better this week than last--no serious kink to work out.
**Oh and did I mention, I finished.
**With my issues--the last hour was a 12 minute mile pace with lots of rest stops--apparently I run faster WITHOUT a watch (see below).
**And the best news--it's TAPER TIME :Pinkbounc Doooo do do do __ do do ___ do do ___ dooo do do do ___ do do __ do do TAPER TIME (think MC Hammer, "You can't touch this")

On the bad side:
Uggggghhhh--where do I start...perhaps about Mile 14 when my lower back started killing me.

Then my GPS went out at the 3 hour mark/15 miles--I knew I should have changed the batteries, my estimate was off by an hour of how much life it had left. Minor issue compared to my HITTING THE WALL. I did carry batteries, but had no way to pry open the case--will need to find a pint sized just in case tool to carry along.

At mile 17--I was just ready to stop and break down in tears because my back was giving me issues (relieved by stretching at the water stops). I took Tylenol 8-hour at mile 14...I need to figure out a way to anticipate pain--because it took about 4 miles for it to kick in. Now mind you it still hurt, but just not in the I'm ready to cry kind of way. Don't worry--it isn't an injury--I think I will have to go to the chiropractor on Monday (ongoing issue) and work with him a plan leading up to the race--I might just need adjustments BEFORE the long runs and that can help. Coach thinks that my tendons on the front of my leg were probably causing an issue (I dont' think they were)--and that as the body is tiring out, it will slowly go into improper form which caused the back pain (in other words, my body was anticipating pain in the front and leaning forward to prevent it, thus becoming a royal pain in the ****).

And now I feel like I am going to be sick--mostly because of all that GU and the two frosted Christmas Cookies I ate post run after my PB&J.

My whole running thing was fine--but I HIT THE WALL at the 14 mile mark in a different way than 3 weeks ago.

It's over--I now know what it feels like--and I'll get to experience it again at Disney. But hopefully, it will be a much nicer experience at Disney.

Okay--sorry for my lack of motivation in this spiel.

Lessons learned:
If you find that you constantly get some kind of pain through the race at a certain point (not the injury type of pain)...anticipate the mile and take your Tylenol 8-hour ahead of time--it takes about 30-40 minutes or so to kick in (for health reasons, the only approved med of the race--not supposed to take anti-inflammatory meds until after you are done b/c of physiological effects that can cause more harm than good--I AM NOT A DOCTOR NOR PLAY ONE ON THE INTERNET).

Hey I came up with something motivational....

It is a MENTAL game to have the courage to finish. In training and in the real thing. You have to assess if your aches and pains are truly just aches and pains--if that's all they are, then push push push while you train. You will probably have aches and pains on race day and if you continue to not meeting your training goals--then you may just be training yourself to quit.

If you have a persistant pain that gets worse as you go and is more injury related--then you have to back off...take it easy, take all the precautionary measures. Do as much as you are able to do. Don't push through it. On race day--PUSH as much as you can and hobble along as you are able.

The key to "is it a regular ache and pain--or is it more closer to injury/overuse pain": If you the pain is causing you to LIMP--then it is the latter, you need to slow it down if you choose to finish your training miles, or just cut the training short. If you are pretty much able to function through your efforts maybe at the same pace or a slower pace and the aches and pains are just persistant little buggers but not getting worse as you progress than it is probably the former and you can keep on trucking.

I hope this helps--I couldn't end my whine-fest on a bad note.
Oh okay--I did 20 miles, yes I can....

Waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! :charac2:

Okay--have a great day!

Sending big hug your way and a cyber high 5 - I hope too that this training day was just that - one day in your training - and now you get to move forward to taper and boy I bet that still sounds good ! Congrats - no small feat that you accomplished today for sure!! Lisa - just remember it now is called taper...taper... taper - so the worse is over :earboy2: Take a nice rest, for the rest of the day!

My walk was not so great either - I really thought I ended up not doing a full 7 and I was totally bummed, but DH thinks I did over 7 so when I go check the mileage that part of the verdict will be "in". Rest of the walk was, well - my **** (in the words of Lisa) bones hurt! I think it is pain that I will have as I walk but it sure would be more enjoyable if the inflammation would just go away!!!! Today I really noticed it when I did any kind of incline at all - that hill better be "little" - but on the bright side - that IS the side I am looking on ........ I got 4 weeks for the inflammation to settle down, think I will call and schedule another massage and I am just going to be thinking POSITIVELY!!!

And, I am making real progress with my to do list for the rest of this day and that makes me smile too - that darn cleaning fairy lost her "roadmap" to my house - can't wait on her any longer - we are having friends over Thursday evening - yeah - they're friends and probably could care less what the house looks like - so I am taking as many shortcuts as I can :earseek:

Susan & Maryliz - kudos on getting out there. I did have the clothing thing figured out today but really I am hoping that is not what I will be wearing in Jan at WDW - I think you would agree - 40's sounds great doesn't it!

karen - you said one day you were freezing - well today I was starving when I got done! Forget any chance of losing any of those lbs I wanted to lose. I was eating, eating and eating. DH was making venison chili and I just attacked the pot when I got home - one small bowl led to another and finally 3rd time was the charm! Finally got satisfied, but after many calories!! Had to include some unsalted tortilla chips too - oh well I am NOT even thinking about it - Karen that is why I don't end up losing that last few lbs I really want to lose! I now am thinking okay if I just don't really gain over these holidays I will be HAPPY!

Time to rev up this cleaning machine again (yep that's me) ! Make it a good day everyone!

WOOOOOHOOOOOO LISA!!!! 20 MILES- <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_19_3.gif' border=0></a>

I'm so impressed with your courage and your strength! And I really appreciate what you said about it being a mental thing.... well, you know what I mean! I have found the same thing.

I'm also impressed equally with everyone else on our thread today. Some of you wne tout in the freezing cold, adn still did your walking! Wer're either really motivated .... or really dumb! I have LOVED reading everyone's posts this morning. It has mad emy day a really happy day.

I walked 8 miles today. That's the first long distance walk i've done in over 2 weeks. The really, really GREAT news is that I didn't have any pain at all in my shins. I told Jim that I didn't want to worry about time today- I just wanted to get the mileage in. So he siad. fine. But I still took note of what time we started and what time we stopped. SO- off we went I took it at a nice comfortable pace. Well, it was kind a like Christmas for me today- because when I looked at the clock when we were done with those 8 miles- What to my wondering eyes should appear? But a clock that told me I had just done 8 miles in 2:22 minutes- which is a 17:45 per mile average! THAT IS SO REALLY REALLY GOOD FOR ME!!!!! I feel so relieved this morning because I feel like I really can do this now, even with the shin splints. I'm just really gonna take it easy the next few weeks, and hopefully, with the "adrenaline factor" at the marathon, I'll be able to get to that 16 min. avarage.

I'm am so proud of all of you warriors today! We fought to get what where we got this morning- and we all survived ! You all RULE!

WTG Lisa on that 20 miles! Congrats on that amazing accomplishment! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I finally thawed out. It took a 40 minute bath in my jacuzzi tub to finally accomplish that. I didn't jump into that nice warm bath right away though, so I think that my muscles had probably already nicely cooled down ... I'm not anticipating any aches for tomorrow :) Susan and I took it at a nice easy pace today, and I think that worked great. After the 2h 15m, we did another 1/2 mile cooldown and then some stretches, so I left there feeling pretty good (except for the frozen parts of my body). I'm not concerned about pushing too much for time now. I know that I can do it, and I think it's just really important to be getting in a few longer walks timewise, regardless of the distance travelled. You WILL go faster on race day ... you can't help yourself because the enthusiasm in the air and with the participants around you is just absolutely amazing, to say the least. :cool1: I do look forward to tapering after Christmas. My last long walk before my Niagara 1/2 was 9.5 miles 2 weeks before the race, and that worked great for me. And the farthest I had gone prior race day was 11 miles a few weeks before it.

I think despite all of our obstacles this past week (life committments, aches, pains, weather, etc) we have all had a great training week. In 4 weeks, I hope to be sleeping peacefully getting ready for the big day!

See you on next weeks thread!

Mary-Liz

Ok, I spent the last 20 minutes reading posts and I feel like I should slap on those shoes and run. ( it's 10:30 pm here with black ice on the roads) Not a good idea. I also have had 3 glasses of good wine - Tomorrow is rest day!!!

grammy- Honest , your friends love you, not your house and they don't say they found dust behind the bathroom door!! They love you because you are an inspiration to them and all the other good things I don't know. Took 15 years to convince my hubby not to care what anyone thinks. He isn't really committed but doesn't fight me anymore. Have a wonderful party!!! (hint: The cleaning fairy move to Aruba 2 weeks ago and she is not coming back!)

Lisa_ What can I say? You are an inspiration ++++!!!!! 20 miles!! Amazing!!! Please don't dimisnish it!! You are wondrful and dedicated!!!

Tinks: I did the 6 mile today too! It was not the stuggle my mind I thought it would be. My toe was burning and throbbing but I kept on. I finished and then went X-mas shopping for 5 hours. I can do 13 miles!!!

Tw1nsmom: I wear gold toe, wicks socks too! so far I love them!! Hope they survive the 13 miles. I may wear 2 pair! Friend said this is a good thing. 10 mile next Sat. try it then. Hope your school stuff works out. Your kids are in their hearts, too.

Susan- Ont. Okay!! I have strong bond to you even though we have no idea who we are. I grew up .5 miles from Canada and love your language!! I curled for 10 years straight and love it!! On Boxing Day, we always have a bonspiel, and I am always dragging people out of bed because we have to be on the ice by 8:00 am. Love it though. You're fabulous people!!!

Lisa loves Pooh: WOW!!!! I love the MC HAMMER look!!!! If you're running out of steam , check your food in take the week before. protiens for 3 days and thn carbo load. Try it , and report back! We all need everyone's help!! You have an official licence to whine!! You are so motivational!!! 7 miles is amazing!!

Training to be great!! We are so strong!!! Best of training to all!!!!

I did get 6 miles today!! I put on my 2 pedometers and used the tradmill!! Guess what one pedometer said 4.7 miles, one said 5. 4 miles and the treasdmill said 6.0!! How confusing!! I am now only a treadmill person. Ice and snow and cold. Really11 100 miles south of the the COLDEST SPOT IN THE NQTION!! International fallls, MN. My parent swear that I grew up in the coldest spot , we just didn't have a weather reporting station! Ha- Ha! they I moved to ALASKA for 4 years, 2 on the Arctic Ocean!! I love the cold!!! Hard to run though and not quite enough snow to snowshoe.

Okay I'm done! Can you tell I'm feeling great!! Hope you all are finding your own hapiness in your days!! (Hint: They will love your choice of gits!! Really!!!)

We are so strong!!! Keep training!!!!! Do you really think Disney is ready for our energy!!! They better step it up a bit!!!!

As I said before--when we ignore the clock--we go faster...what is up with that! Excellent time!

Hi all,
So what is everyone paying to stay at the Caribbean Beach. I thought it was $107 a night. When I called yesterday it was $135 a night. ASMov is $77 a night but I would definately like to be near the fun.

I'm going to book my tickets and hotel this weekend when I have time to sit down and call. With work, homework and other things at night I'm not finding much time to get it done.

I worked out last night. It's the first time since June, so it's a start. I know I am way behind on my training so I expect to only get mostly running in.

Renee, I too think walking/running with some people may help with the motivation and boredom factor at least in the beginning. Sort of a "come on you can do it" kind of thing. I'd be willing to walk with you, not sure how sucessful I will be with running but I will probably add a burst of running here and there.
Hey mel..thats nice of you..I am not big on running myself but I guess I have been doing half and half.........
anyway Ill look for you there. I am still waiting for my packet from disney!!!!!!!!

Havent gotten anything yet, I am so stressing out about that! I have called them and theyhave my name and everything they said they would send me another but still nothing yet! Gonna call them again tomorrow...........
talk to you soon..where are you staying anyway? Im at the ASM.

Saturday's long run- 18 miles finished!!!!!

It felt sooooo good to finally have a good training day - and on a long run. I finished in 3:50 - and I really think I could have finished a whole marthon - which is the point at this point in the training.

I have settled on the socks I will wear race day. It has rained and rained and rained here over the past week, with it finally clearing up on Friday, but the bad news was several rivers and creeks have flooded. And part of my running trail had flooded too. About 1 mile into the run we had to cross a pond. It was about 30 feet long, and 6 inches deep and covering the path. There really was no place to go around it, so we splashed right through. Brrr! It was in the upper 30's that morning. Anyway - I ran 17 miles in wet socks and shoes and I did not get a single blister. I am impressed.

One more hard week for me - with another 18 mile run next Sat. and then I can start the MC Hammer taper dance. Whoooo!

Lisa - I don't know if you have another run long enough to test it, but I tried a Snicker's Marathon bar during this run and it worked great. It didn't leave me with the lead weight feeling that the Cliff Bars do.
