Marathon Training Thread- 12/13-12/20

Back pain update:

It still hurts--my muscles are doing anarchy.

Some good news from the coach: I'm not at catastrophe mode yet--b/c I've been consistent all season--these next one or two long runs will NOT make or break me for finishing the marathon. So good note on that.

If I'm worried about fitness levels--I can switch to other aerobic activity such as the elliptical--so I may have to join a gym!

I asked about a simple back brace--kind of like when people where an ankle or knee brace. We'll see what he says.

Other wise--rest and ice!

Good Wednesday Morning Everyone!!!

It looks like we're all getting very busy. I did get on the treadmill last night and went just over two miles in 45 minutes. Does anyone else find that treadmill walking seems much harder than street walking?? It could be because my legs are doing all the work. I just find it difficult to go any faster than a 3.2 mile per hour speed. Yet, I can do much faster than that when I'm on the street. It can be discouraging sometimes though. I know that I can walk the 13 miles but I becoming less and less convinced that I will get it done in the time allocated.

I intend to keep up with the stride drills on the treadmill and then hopefully that will translate to speed on the street.

Have a great day!!!!!

All finished! 11 miles in 2 hours, give or take. I am sore so I popped some Advil to get me through the day. It was a tough run for me. I felt like I ran out of energy at mile 8, but we plowed through it. The best news is one more long run until "taper-time."

Good luck everyone!

Susan O---I do think it is harder on the TM. We did 1/2 on the TM and 1/2 on the track. It feels like you fly on the track. Much easier when your body actually has forward motion. Who knows? I know you can finish 13 in time allowed. Don't be discouraged! :)

Good morning everyone. Boy do I feel on top of the world today! It's absolutely amazing!! Doing that 5 miles last night made me realize that I should be able to do this, but I must keep up training. It's awesome too because I didn't wake up sore today! Woo hoo! I'm going to try to find that book today at lunch after I go to Dicks Sporting good store and see if I can find some coolmax pants, shirt and socks. I'm also ordering a couple of good coolmax bra's from Title 9 today.

Susan- I really hope the street is easier and faster than the TM. Sometimes I wonder since it's a belt that is moving what it will be like on the real track. One thing for sure, at least it isn't like looking at 4 walls.

Lisa- Sending you pixie dust that your pain goes away. I've been reading some back posts on the marathon thread. WOW you amaze me, you are doing so awesome!

Have a gread day everyone!

Race Packet update:
Here is the reply I got. Renee, here is the e-mail address I used. It was e-mail from the original confirmation I got when I payed for the registration.

emmi2@emmi.com

The last mass mailing of the race programs took place last week and included all
group entries. We should be receiving the leftover race programs and Race Number
Pickup Card/Waivers from the mail house soon. If we receive those programs and
waivers before Christmas and in sufficient quantities, we will try to get another
one sent to you at that time. If you don't receive the program, you will need to
pick up your packet at the Expo on either Friday, January 7th from 9 am - 8 pm or
Saturday, January 8th from 8:30 am - 7 pm. The Expo will be at Disney's Wide
World of Sports Complex at the Milk House. Parking for the expo is free. Follow
the signs to the Wide World of Sports. When you enter the number pickup area,
please proceed directly to Runner Relations and we will take care of you there.
Go to www.disneyworldmarathon.com for more information on the weekend.

Thanks,

Steve Lapierre
Registration Manager

My bvodt has been telling me not to do anything either- and I don't know if it's because I'm just lazy, or because I really need the rest! But I always try to get my long walk in. Anyone have any idea on how to tell the difference between the two? I've been this wai for a couple of weeks now!!!!

I hope everyone is feeling better today. My DD has a sinus infection, and I think I am catching it! I have a Dr.'s apointment this afternoon. I may just ask her for some anti biotic just in case. Is anyone gonna try the "Airborne" stuff before thye leave so they won't get sick from the plane? Ever heard of it? I've heard GREAT things about it, andm I am thinking baout it because I don't wnt to get sick the day before or of the race.

OK I am about to head out for my longest walk yet, today is my 10 mile day and it is amazing how "warm" 27 degrees can feel when there is not much wind and the sun is actually shining, so at least I have good weather for my long walk. I needed to stop by here first for my dose of motivation!

Karen I know I have been feeling lazy lately. Once I am out there walking I am OK but I really need to push myself to get out there. Lately I just feel like how much walking can a person do when there are Christmas preparations, laundry, and a very clutterd house to take care of and of course I'd really rather just curl up with a good book more than anything but yet somehow I am still making that walking the number 1 priority, the crosstraining has pretty much fallen to the wayside though and I really need to find the motivation to get back to that. Take care of yourself and rest if you need to! You do not want that sinus infection! Do you take vitamins? What is that "airbourne" stuff you mentioned and where do you get it?

Melanie Glad to see you are joining us! It sounds like you are doing great getting back into the training! Where did you end up deciding to stay?

Tinks WOW 11 miles in 2 hours :thewave: That is awesome!

Susan I feel like the treadmill is harder too. In fact I hate our treadmill! Don't let it discourage you! YOU CAN AND WIIL FINISH IN TIME! Just keep moving an dthink positive.

Lisa Take care of yourself! I hope your back feels better quickly!!!! I can't imagine how frustrated you must be right now. Prayers and :wizard: for a quick recovery and here's a  for you too! I want to tell you thank you again for recommending the foot roller and my feet really thank you!!! My left foot is still having some issues but it is much better when I remeber to use the foot roller right after my walk.

Molli I think making all those food baskets must count towards crosstraining! Wow that is awesome. Life sure is busy this time of year isn't it! I think I will just bring the Navigators I picked up on the Magic for you to the marathon, I haven't had a chance to sort throught them yet and copy trhe ones I didn't get and I probably won't get to that until after Christmas. Good luck with you 11 miler tomorrow!

maryliz I hope you are feeling better today! Get your rest and take your vitamins!

LAWalz It sur is hard to get out there in the cold isn't it? Great job!

Jackie Good for you for getting back out there! It seems like alot of us are having a hard time keeping going right now. Keep up the great work, we are soooo close now!

:grouphug: to everyone! You ladies are THE BEST!

Enough procrastanating from me for that long walk, I need to get out there now and I'll report back in on how I do later!
Keep moving everyone!

Sorry about DD--I hope she feels better.

Regarding lazy versus needing rest--my guess, if you feel better after the walk then your laziness might be telling you not to do it--if you feel worse, then it was probably from needing rest. My body has felt fine before when I wanted to not run--but my body really isn't up to it right now.

Icing away as we speak!

Another good note on that "non-bun in the oven" related nausea--it was b/c I was taking my 800mg Ibuprofen without food...aren't I a dummy!

Took it with food this a.m. and no problems :)

So let's hope this pain in the ****--goes away.

Coach e-mailed and said no on the back brace as that would interfer with form--so it looks like I might be changing my running stride!!! And it might take me more than 6 hours to finish :( Very bummed about that--but I'll still get a MICKEY!!!

So I just called them again ( about my packet) and they said they would put me on the third mailing.........which means I was on both the firsta nd second but I havent gotten anything. I know I can pick up whatever I need there but I WANT MY PACKET.............. lol
Anyway hope I get it this week............

exactly whats in there?

Training, I havetn been on the treadmill in about a week!!!!!!!!!
I havent had a chance pick up my cool max socks..... I am afraid its gonna hurt otherwise........or I am simply procrastinating! ug either way, I will get on the treadmill as soon as I sign off here.............

So about this GU...( havent had it yet) how often will you all be using this during the race? what other products are good for during the race............

Got my gear (except socks)
No packet but hopefully in a week.........
just need to figure out what I will eat and drink during the race..........
whats everyone elses plan ?

Wow - I've missed so much. I've been alittle under the weather myself and have not kept up the pace :guilty: Have only walked a few miles here & there on the tm, it is sooo cold(20's) outside. Becky you beat me for sure  & to the canadian group - snow already.

Awesome training everyone! Tinks what a great run - congrats :flower: Melanie glad to see you are going to make it  Sorry to here about your back Lisa, glad to see the illness problem was solved :D

Cheryl - I agree with all the HOliday stuff getting in on the training time! I want to hear that you did the whole 10 miles.

Off to the post office & a little tm time - have a wonderful wish filled wednesday :earseek:

Lisa - when you refer to a "pain in the ****" do you mean that literally? Is the pain in the buttocks, rather than low back/sacrum? If so, it may be an irritated piriformis - that happens to me when I do pick-ups or other drills where I run substantially above my normal pace, especially if I lengthen my stride in doing so. There are several stretches that will help this somewhat. The other thing I always think of when a runner refers to back pain is adequate hydration - sometimes "back pain" is actually kidney pain due to inadequate hydration. Finally, if all this sounds condescending, I apologize. I think I have had about every running injury there is, so I tend to butt in when someone else mentions a running-related problem.

No kidney problems as I have no fevers and such and no other urinary related symptoms.

The pain in the **** referred to what I called it on my original report of my 20 miles. My back pain is very very low on the back and on that day it was extending into the upper part of my tush as all the muscles were trying to deal iwth the issue. But it isn't really my tush but the back portion leading into your tush--make sense?

I will look at changing my stride as then it doesn't hurt when I run--I will try that on Saturday--not sure on the liklihood of making it to 16...but then I can just help cheer for the team!

Karen...
My sister swears by the Airborne stuff. I have used it and avoided getting sick. It is sold out all the time in this smallish town that I live in - -usually Walgreens, Wal-Mart or any "drug" store carry the Airborne. If I were flying to Orlando I would probably take it the day before and the day of my flights.
My husband is sick right now with a terrible cold, I went loooking for Airborne today and came home without any. They just can't keep it on the shelves here.
I went ahead and did my longest training run today (20 miles). I am afraid I am going to get sick and wanted to make sure to get in the 20 miler :cool1: All downhill from here!

I did it, I did it I got the full 10 miles in plus a little more for my cool down walking! I did the 10 miles in 2 hours and 31 minutes which is just over a 15min/mile pace. Yahoo my longest walk is over until the marathon!!!!!!! There was a lot more wind out there today than I thought, the wind really picked up between the time I got home from taking DD to school and the time I went out for my walk, at times I had to lower my head and "plow fprward" into it but at other times it must have been giving me alittle help a pushing at my back but I sure didn't feel that as much as I felt the resistance LOL. My legs feel a little stiff now and I am a little tired so I am glad to have tomorrow as a rest day! I wore my new shoes and they felt pretty good so I think I have finally found my shoes for the 1/2.

I am definitely going to look for some of that Airbourne stuff! I do take some good vitamins but I figure I'll take any help I can get when flying to keep me from getting sick for the marathon!

10nis Congrats on getting in 20 miles! You guys doing the full marathon just amaze me! :cheer2:

Meme I hope you start feeling better quickly :wizard: ! Don't you just hate the cold weather! My sister couldn't believe it when I told her I was going to be walking 10 miles outside today.

Well hopefully we will get the Christmas tree set up tonight. We have an artificial tree that already has the lights on it so DH sets up the tree and then we all shape it and DD and I put on the ornaments. I can't believe Christmas is just a little over a week away and 3 weeks from now I will be in Orlando already!

Keep moving everyone! WE CAN DO THIS!

Cheryl

Well, I walked 3 miles at he mall this morning. Nothing spectacular, but I got it done.

I've had a phenominally bad day. I know this thread is just supposed to be for training info., but I had a meeting at DS's school and ended up crying most of the meeting. We're having major integration/equity problems. The director refuses to make any changes even though the state rep. wants him to work with me. I have a lot of thinking to do, and I most likely will have to hire a lawyer. If you could send some positive energy my way, I'd really appreciate it. Maybe it will help me break out of my funk.

Dawn

Well, I've been pretty quiet this week. It's been busy at school, so maybe a rest week worked out well for me. My hip/thigh is still bothering me, but I am doing the stretches that PT gave me for my knee, and a few from a 'real' runner at school and the internet. Ibuprofen for the inflammation and pain. It hurts to climb stairs, but walking is getting better. I didn't get to Curves, but will do so next week....that and I have an hour session with the massage therapist on Tuesday. My goal is to start slow, but start again. Probably 5-15 minutes the first outing (I do some walking on yard duty), and then increase as I feel better. How does that sound??

So about this GU...( havent had it yet) how often will you all be using this during the race? what other products are good for during the race............

Reneé, I'll be using my PowerGels every 30 minutes with some water. Those carb breaks keep me going! :earboy2:

Regarding lazy versus needing rest--my guess, if you feel better after the walk then your laziness might be telling you not to do it--if you feel worse, then it was probably from needing rest. My body has felt fine before when I wanted to not run--but my body really isn't up to it right now.

::yes:: As one who has been plagued by both....what she said! ::yes::
Remember, slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!

You gals are doing so well! Keep it up! Your runs are keeping me inspired, despite the inability to be out there myself. Thanks!

WooHoo Cheryl - YOU GO GIRL !!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

That's an awesome accomplishment! It's truly all downhill from here sweetie! And a fabulous time to boot! You totally rock!

Dawn - :grouphug: and PD coming your way my friend.

I stayed home from work again today. I made myself stay up all day though, so that I will sleep like a baby tonight, with the help of some medication ;) I'm thinking that I will postpone my plan for 10 miles this Saturday since I haven't been out all week. But then again, after being cooped up in the house for a couple of days, the fresh air may just keep me going :) If not, looks like Christmas Eve morning, or Boxing Day it will be because I don't have any other time off of work until then. No worries, it'll get done eventually.

Thanks everyone for keeping me motivated, even when I can't be out there myself.

Mary-Liz

Dawn Sending prayers, PD :wizard: and a great big  your way. I hope you get things worked out at your DS's school. Keep up with your walking as a way to have some quiet time to think and to relieve some of the stress.

Debbie I hope that your hip/thigh and knee improve quickly for you!! Ease back into things gradually. That hour session with the message therapist sounds heavenly.

Maryliz You have a great attitude about seeing how you feel determining when you get your long walk in. As you said it will get done when you are ready for it you don't want to overdo it and get sicker again
