Marathon Training THread 11/21-11/28

:rotfl: Karen, yup that would be me.

Take care of those shin splints so that you don't get worse.

I was wondering as we draw down to the last weeks (maybe month) if we might be able to combine our weekly thread into one last big one. I thought it might be a good way to keep everyone informed of any last minute gatherings if the information is in one thread. We could even ask for cheerleaders to get us through. What do we think?

Good Friday Morning Everyone!! (even though I'm sure that a lot of you aren't even near these boards as you hit those fabulous sales). We get Detroit, Chicago stations and those ads made me want to go to JC Penny etc today. However, instead at 5:30 this morning I was on my treadmill walking. I only did 1.5 miles but I lowered the elevation and it was much better. I'll raise it up later once I'm more back on track. Tomorrow Debbie and I are hoping to do a 4 mile brisk outside. We're going to warm up before we start timing just to see how that affects our overall time. I can't believe that it will take us 20 minutes to walk to the starting line but I guess they must have clocked it to be certain.

I wonder how many of us are in the last corral. Since the number start with 23000 and there is supposedly only 24000 people registered then there shouldn't be any more than 1000 people. I guess we are going to need something to make us stand out in the early morning hours. I have some glow in the dark necklaces (probably 50 or so) that I could bring. Then when you see the lady with the purple necklace you'll know it's me and you too can get a necklace. What do think???

Have a super day everyone!! Do most people in the US get today off as well as yesterday, or do you have to take a vacation day to be able to go shopping??

Keep On, keeping on!!

Susan! I have been bidding on Ebay for those glow in the dark necklaces for just such a purpose!! BUT- since you already have them- please bring them! I guess that great minds think alike! Are they 22" ones?
We'll all be soo beautiful! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_2_7.gif' border=0></a>

BTW_ my race number is 23438, DH 23439

Yes, I believe that's how long they are. I was given over 200 of them because they were old and about 25% of them no longer worked. I will sift through them and pull out the ones that will still work and will bring them with me. My DH will be pleased that I've managed to get some stuff out of the house.

:Pinkbounc :bounce:

<font color=green> Susan and I did 5 miles this morning in 80 minutes. . .with a potty break in there, too, so things worked out very well....and now it looks like I'm first on the new boards! Yeah!!!</color>

wooooohoooooooo! THE BOARDS ARE UP AND RUNNING ALREADY!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Boards are back! Yippee!

I just got back and was going to send an email to Karen. I did my Lonnngggg walk today. I walked for 2 hours and 40 minutes and covered at least 11 miles. I rock!

Did you see this thread http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=686289 about the scarves? The glow in the dark necklaces will be a big help because it's going to be really dark....was hoping it was around a full moon, but no luck there. Well, new moon (almost), new adventure!

Lily- YOU DO ROCK!!! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/26/26_11_4v.gif' border=0></a>

Hi everyone!

I haven't been around much at all, due to several injuries, etc. I have done very little training, as everytime I start I hurt something! Then I get depressed and eat! So, in addition to not training, I've gained about 25 pounds in the last 6 months!

Anyway, I'm still going to be there and still planning on starting the half-marathon. I'm sure I won't be able to walk more than about 2 miles, as the injuries I currently have probably won't be totally better until about 1-2 weeks before the trip.

I feel bad, and yet, I still want to at least start and do what I can. Even though I know I won't be able to do much, and know that I'll be looking forward to being swept up after a little while, I'll be embarassed about all the people on the sidelines seeing me being swept so early in the game! Any ideas how I can get over the embarassment that morning?

Also, is there a certain thread I should be watching for as for as get-togethers, etc? I feel like you all know each other already, and I feel like such an outsider since I haven't been around much at all. But, I'd still like to meet you all!

Debbie

Debbie, you need to get the book by John Bingham Marathoning for Mortals PLEASE DO NOT BE EMBARRASSED! You are injured and that means you have not been able to train. If you do decide that you will step off, you got yourself to the line. This is the most important part. Believe in yourself. You do what you can, you do your best, and you are doing!

Get togethers are still in process, so keep coming here. Info should be posted about things really soon now.

I agree with lily- don't be embarassed! You made an effort to train and you can't help what your body does in the meantime! I may just be joining you with that sweeper as I have newly developed shin splints- and I have been unable to train for the last week. Trying to get them on the mend as we speak!

As for right now- there are only tenative plans for get togethers. I have contacted the guy in charge of planning and he was supposed to email me our options but I have heard nothing from him at all. I will be calling AGAIN (3rd time) first thing Monday morning to talk to him. Hopefully, he'll be abel to come up with something. If not- then we shall gaher at the pools at resorts or whatever! I want to meet everyone.

Ah, Debbie. Don't get depressed. First, you've heard it here, so it must be true....injuries are not your fault. Secondly, all who've gained weight this year wave to Debbie. :wave2:  That's one for every _____ pounds. :rolleyes1 You are not alone, hun. Thirdly, I like the idea of you digging out JB's Marathoning for Mortals. Penguins we all are. :teeth: Finally, my sister Susan said that she was going to buy the "I did it" shirt at the Expo, the Saturday before the walk. WHY? Because just getting to the starting line is an accomplishment all by itself. I think that I might buy that shirt, too. Finally, if you are swept, maybe they'll let you ride shotgun so you can encourage us as you come up from behind. "WOG! WOG! WOG!! Go girls, get moving. WOG! WOG! WOG!! I've grabbed the wheel, but s/he's trying to pull it back! WOG! WOG! WOG!!!"

Hi all,

CONGRATS LILY :rockband: you do rock! awesome 11 miles.
I only managed a 3.5 walked at sunset & it was chilly & than dark. Not too long ago I would have been very happy with 3.5 but now I feel like a need to do at least 5.
Today I wanted to do a long one but guess where it is raining :boat: our backyard is a mess so I'll need to go to dm for her tm, I don't even want to leave my house :guilty:

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Who has their Christmas decorations up?

Karen sorry to hear about the shin splints. What is our final decision on the logo?Dawn & Rachael I'll send yuo an email today but I think we are still in the draft stage.

Keep up the great work everyone :cheer2:

Debbie, I'm right there with you. I'll be STARTING the race and will go till my joints (or the sweeper) tell me to stop......if the race had been yesterday that would have been at the 3 mile mark! I'm really thinking now that the most beneficial thing I can do in the next six weeks is really focus on weight loss. I will keep up with my walking schedule, but I'm begining to think the less I have to carry the better it will be for these old joints and the farther I can go.

No need to be embarrased about being the first one in the sweeper van....I was at the 10K in October and I survived. Actually had a great time with the cutie driver! ;) We'll just be at the finish line, cheering on all our WISH pals!

Today I'm putting on a different pair of sneakers and seeing what I can do about 'finishing' yesterday's walk!

wowsies! fancy new boards!

anyhow -- i don't have time to read right now -- just wanted to post I did 4 miles in 60 mins today. Not to be compared to She Who's Name Shall Not Be Mentioned Who ROCKS! :rockband:

Meme, did you get my email? I sent a comment on the logo. I love what you have done so far.

No decroations up so far. I'm not sure when we will get to that.

Everyone, keep at it. We are getting there. I think we all deserve the "I did it" stuff. Getting to that line has been a long and trying trek for all of us. We deserve to praise ourselves even if we all can't finish. We all rock!

Busy day here. I am recovering as I am a bit sore from yesterday. Ouch. That was my longest ever. I will not do one as long until the real thing now.

No worries Debbie!!! You should never exercise injured anyway. So good for you to head to that start line! You get to enjoy the brrrr COLD brrrr...the fireworks (okay, the sparkles!!!)...and a nice jaunt through EPCOT with only 12000 of your closest friends :grouphug: .

:cheer2: :cheer2: Go DEBBIE, Go Debbie, Go Debbie!!!!!

Okay...now back in my corner!

Ran the Space Coast half marathon today--and my GPS died--it needed new batteries before the start finish line :( I didn't think to check that before I left home--so one more thing to add to the check list of pre-race activities.

Regarding the race and the water--I have decided that the water stations will be used to refill my water bottle. Evidently chugging water at the stops (even if I walk and do it)--causes me to get a cramp. When I switched to bottle exclusively and just refilling it as needed--the cramps went away. A cheering section--no matter if you know them or not--is incredibly motivating!!

Okay--I have to run (out the door)--but b/c I didn't have a GPS--I ran with one of my friends and kept to her 9 run/1 walk pace--I figured--she's a little faster than I--but it was better than running blind with no timing device and really really messing up my training run. I finished the half in ~2 h 21 m or so...I will have to look up the time later--so it does look like I will finish the full in wayyy less than 6--but I will certainly NOT do that pace for the full--and I'll make sure I have extra batteries!

Hi everyone

I'm back from our cruise on the Magic. It was GREAT!!!!! We had such a FABULOUS time!!!! I did manage to keep most of my promise that I made about exercising, I walked 3 times for at least 45 min. each time and I biked once on Castaway Cay, so I only missed 1 day of biking (I had a massage instead and it was heavenly). I also took the stairs all the time except when I had heals on for dinner. We were on deck 5 so that was quite a bit of stairs so that should count for some crosstraining! Today I have been busy finishing unpacking and doing mountains of laundry so I didn't get my walk in like I had planned so I better get out there tomorrow afternoon after I drop DD off at basketball practice. I haven't had a chance to read this weeks thread yet, so I'll have to make sure I do that this week. I did see Dawn's post about the lime green scarf so I signed up for one of those.

Karen I finally convinced DH to buy DVC while on the ship, or at least I think I did, now he is talking about cancelling through DVC and buying resale. I'm not too sure I'm too comfortable about doing it that way. I might PM you with some DVC questions if you don't mind.

Keep moving everyone, I can't believe how close we are getting now YIKES. Well I'm off to more laundry.

Cheryl

Great going everyone.

Way to go Lisa under 2 iand 1/2 hours that's impressive! That will give you plenty of time to "enjoy" the marathon and still finish in under 6 hours. Who would have guessed that we would ever be talking about "enjoying" a half marathon or a marathon.

DH and I just got back from Seattle. It was our 5th wedding anniversary so we drove down on Saturday, did some shopping, had dinner, stayed overnight at a nice hotel and came home this afternoon. Haven't done my run this weekend yet. I am scheduled for a "short" long run - 4 miles, so I should head out soon.

See you all next week!
