Marathon training check in thread

Hi everyone! Very warm and humid here. Major chafing going on! Didn't "lube" up before my run on Wed. morning and I'm paying the price now! :earseek:
Maybe we can start a new thread on Sunday morning for the week?
Hope everyone's weekend/ training goes well!

Baileymouse: sorry to hear about your hip. It sounds like you're working through the pain really well though. Losing over a hundred pounds is amazing! What drive and determination. Take care of those legs!

Karen: Keep it up with all that you're doing. You've done such an amazing job so far-nutrition and exercise-keep it up!

Beth and Jackie: did you get any rest? Still coughing? Feel better!

Monica: I haven't heard the cicadas yet. I keep waiting for the big arrival! Glad you finally got your treadmill.

Maryellen: I'm actually in S. Jersey, right outside of Philly.

Melanie: I only hate the first 1-2 miles of running, after that I like it. The problem is getting past that point!

I'm sure I forgot something/someone, so I'll try to check in tomorrow!
Colleen

Ashley- maybe you could do your motivational thought on the first day of the week when I start the new thread- otherwise, you could just email it- I love the idea. I think MeMe's motivational board is on her wall at home- where she excercises- which is another great idea- and I'm doing it too! BTW- my DH went to the U of Minnesota. He wants to go back and visit his alma mater someday soon!

Well- I did my time again today. 30 minutes - 1.33 miles- very consistent with my last time. I used my 60's walking tape which was JUST RIGHT for speed for me. And I felt good when I was done- but I did the walk in the pm- and I really like walking first thing in the morning- give s me energy for the whole day. Good thing the marathon is in the am - huh?!?!?!?

Monica- did you get your 30 mins. in today on your new treadmill? How was it???

Thanks to everyone for keeping this thread going! It is keeping ME going! On days when I feel frustrated or depressed, I know I can always come here and find someone posting something that will encourage me. YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!

Hey Ashley:

I actually am trying to train for the half so I would love to have a walk-run regiment to follow.
I have to learn to breathe right because I get severe side cramps. I am learning - but the cramps make me want to stop - so any suggestions would help.

Krista
KrisNoth

Oh and my information is correct:D

If anybody wants one of the training plans, let me know! Walk, Walk-Run (mostly walking), Run-Walk (mostly running), or Run. I am going home next week and will have all the copy machine access I can handle! I will mail it out sometime next week, so just PM me with your address and which one you want. I have found them very doable, as they are coming from a book called MARATHONING FOR MORTALS, and I am VERY mortal. I may even include a surprise with my outgoing mail, we will see what happens! (I do love surprising people with mail, and yes, I am a big dork!) (Dork is in the dearest sense of the word, as I do love being this way.)

Everybody keep it up and enjoy any warm or sunny days, as all we have here is cold, windy, wet, gloom and doom.

Ashley

to the motivational board :p

Alreadyexcitedgrammy (AEG) here! Bev is my name, you may see aka Bebr on the board too (short nickname of Beverly - given to me - way long ago, high school days)

MeMe not sure we've met - but I am

ohmom's - Mom
Evansmom's - Aunt

I'll be a walker at the 1/2 - ohmom and I are on our way to Vegas but when we return I am getting a plan in writing and following it.

I treadmill during the week (usually 4 mi a day) and really like to do a 8 mile walk on Sat. Right now I am consistantly doing a 15 min mi and adding some jogging to reduce that time some but I know that I can't keep that pace for 13.5 miles - so my goal will be 15 min miles.

Karen-
I meant to add... Let me know when you come back to MN! What's life like in Oregon? I want to move out of this Midwest region that I am trapped in! East, west, north (DBF wants Alaska  ), South (I want WDW :hyper: ), or Hawai'i (I could handle their weather...) all sound nice. Now I just have to find places looking for teachers and police officers, and we will be all set to be done with college and moving right along! Is your husband from MN originally? Nice to find some connections!

Wow! What an inspirational thread! It's great to hear everyones stories and accomplishments. So far, I've learned a lot, and I'm sure to learn more as the time gets closer. :)

My personal goal is to run the whole 26.2 miles. Sometimes I think I'm crazy  , but there are times when it makes me get choked up. ;) Reading this thread has really motivated me. About two years ago I was going to sign up for the half marathon at Disney, but I chickened out. :o So, this year, with much encouragement from DH, I signed up for the whole thing. I've been slowly upping the miles. (I have a LONG way to go) And, I deifinately have to work on nutrition! (major road block for me) Thank you everyone for getting me excited again. I love to hear about people's training plans.

Keep up the good work!

Sara

Good morning everyone!!

Welcome Sara!! Kudos for you signing up to fulfill your dream!! That's 1/2 the battle itself.

Everyone seems to be doing great - way to go!! I love the fact that we have this thread - it helps to keep me on track knowing I have others that I need to stay accountable to....and knowing that we're going to be doing this together in FL helps to calm some of the nerves!

The TM is up and running!!! It turned on and didn't blow up!! (I'm not the most mechanically inclined person :p ). I did a 1/2 hr on it last night!!

Going to try for over 30 min tonight, and am going to the Running Store in Frederick tomorrow to scope out shoes, etc. Will also see if they have any magazines w/ the WDW ad in them.

Ashley - I'm sending you a PM for the walk-run (mostly walk) option....thanks for the offer.

Hope everyone has a super day!!!

Got in my walk this morning!! It feels good to be back on my feet. Also lost 1 lb this week, and got an updated clippie!! (Yeah!!) I am truly a turtle, but Iwill win the race!! I also finally took the time to update my counters. Gosh, lots of Dis maintenance today!!

Karen, I like doing the 60's tape, too. I'm up to doing 5 songs from the 70's tape during the walk. I walk about 10 minutes to the 60's then skip over to the 70's for that set and then back. Slowly I'm building up my speed and hopefully will be all 70's well before the marathon. All 70's all the time. I sound like a radio station!!lol How was today for you? BTW, I got my wakeup call right before I turned that proberbial corner into the health issues. Hang in there. You are doing so well for yourself!

Colleen, I'm MUCH better today, thanks! Hope your chafing clears up!! That's miserable!

Ashley, I love your spriit and enthusiasm! I can see you as our cheerleader!

All from me for now. Gotta go drag the kids to the school room! Have a great day everyone!
~~Beth

Hi all,

Sorry Colleen, you are now back to being a Jersey girl;)
Welcome Bev, what is your daughter's name other than ohmom:) Love Vegas where are you staying?

Hi Sara added to my map for IN- you go girl for doing the whole marathon- love a woman who knows what she wants :)

Great job Monica - on the walking and on getting the tm not to explode:p

Congrats Beth :Pinkbounc

I pm you Ashley for the walk training - thanks so much! I love your quote- will you be motivating us weekly with a new one?

Well I'm off to the park for a 3 mile walk - Keep it up ladies:wave2:

Hi guys -

Any possible way I can get a picture of each of you either emailed or mailed to me? I would LOVE to have you guys in my Marathon album (I scrapbook, and have decided to do 1 album just about this journey - I will be including the pics from the Doylestown PA walk, a 2 mile walk I'm doing next weekend, other things along the way, then ofcourse of different things during our Marathon weekend).

I would gladly pay for postage if you want to email something (can be of you alone, or with your families).

Thanks!!

Hello, everyone....

I just found this thread and would like to give encouragement to all. Two years ago, my husband and I did our first half-marathon at WDW. He was 52, I was 50. We had never done anything like this before and he thought I was crazy when I suggested it. We go to WDW every January anyway, so why not get involved?? So, we started training and thought we were doing so good....and we were always surprised by our distances(we always just knew we had gone a lot further!!!) My doctor, who is an ultra-marathoner encouraged us all the time and made the statement to me that it would take four months to see we were settling into a groove of training. And, you know, that was so correct. At the end of four months, we saw a significant difference in speed and distance. We walked the half that year and last year we both did the full, which we are doing again this year. When we decided to do the full, Jim said that he could not be out there for that long and decided he would have to run....and run he did. We agreed that we would train together, but differently. I walked it, because I had certain issues with running. He finished it in 4:20 minutes and I took the full 7 hours....but, I finished. He did the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on May 2 and wanted to do it in sub-four hours....he finished in 3:54!!! Now, back to me.....I have found a new running technique which works for me and I am trying to incorporate it into my training. I go to the fitness center every morning before work and alternate laps of running and walking. I am seeing progress - and my wonderful, supportive husband reminded me what my doctor said in the very beginning - you will see significant progress at the end of four months. So, I am just training and working on running. I am most encouraged!!!!

I had such issues with blisters on my feet(on the entire balls of each foot)....if I did more than 6 miles, I would always get blisters. I tried powder, vaseline, bodyglide, blister socks....you name it and I tried it. For me, what finally worked was duct tape.

I had problems finding the right shoes(especially when I decided to start running). I finally found Saucony Fastwitch Endurance - they have a lower heel and very flexible sole. For the first two years of our training....I felt like my shoes controlled my feet. I now feel like I am controlling my shoes.

Wearing spandex keeps down the chafing issue.

Bodyglide does help to prevent chafing from my bra.

We started with pedometers....key thing here is to make sure they are set to your own stride length. We do not use them anymore, as we use trails where we know the distances. We are now into heart rate monitors. I got my husband one for his birthday last year and swore that I never wanted anything that technical....just seemed like too much trouble. Since I started with running/walking, I now own my own heart rate monitor and am enjoying comparing the readings on day-to-day training.

We began using Hal Higdon's beginner walking program. I know you already have a program, but this guy offers a lot of insight into walking a marathon and makes it all sound so do-able!! And, he lets you know that you have good days and not-so-good days. And, that it is perfectly normal and not to get discouraged about it.

Be sure to wear sunglasses, if possible. The sun adds heat on those days to your body....and supposedly, the shades help keep you cooler.

Did not mean to get so wordy....just want you to know that you can do it and it continues to get better and better!!!!! There is such fulfillment once you cross that finish line...you have worked hard and it has paid off!!!

Good luck!

Cheerleader is my goal, but not on the sidelines for this one!!! I will have a quote for you each week, I am thinking of making it up in word and emailing it out? Then you can print it off and put it in a place where it will motivate you. I was also thinking of making up a database with everybody's names, addresses, etc., and I could mail out motivation, this is something I did my freshman year of college as my friends and I struggled being away from each other and going through the changes life throws at you. I just think these little things provide a little emotional high.

Anyway, family is slowly rolling into town for a big, bad weekend of eating badly (and graduating, kind of!). I will not be on until Mondayish, but I will update you with a quote then.

mm1928, thank you for sharing so much information! Definitely helpful for those of us who don't know what we've gotten into, but are excited to find our way through it!

Thanks EVERYBODY, I would not be here if I hadn't found this place!

Ashley

mm1928- thanks so much for your post! It's always good for me to hear from people that have already done this!I hope you keep posting here and visiting us- I'm sure there are questions that will come up that noone will know the answer to- that you may. I appreciate the 4 month comment. I'm gonna keep that in the back of my head and bring it up every time I feel like I am getting nowhere!

Ashley- have a fun family time this weekend! I'll miss seeing your posts- just remember to come back on Monday!

Welcome Sara!!! We're excited to have another girl on our thread. How excitting that you are doing the full marathon! Have you walked/run marathons before? Is your DH coming along for the run/walk?

Monica- I don't have too many pics of myself, but I could probably scan something and email it to you. Can you pm me your email addy?

Trola- just remember..... it was the tortoise that won the race! ;)

Grammy- you go girl! 15 minute mile... and now adding joggin and bringing your time down to 13 or so . WOW!!!!!!! I am impressed! YOU DA WOMAN!!!! My idol ! :teeth:

Krista- how long have you been training for? I have a good piece of advice for you....... breathing is important.... DON'T FORGET TO BREATHE!

Pixiechick- You gotta Lube the tube (top that is...tube top) ! Don't forget- chafing isn't worth the pain.... just repeat to yourself- LUBE THE TUBE..... lube the tube... Oh- Monday morning I'll start a new thread as per your request- so be sure to look for it!

I think I'm gonna make up a tshirt that says I'm doing this half marathon "For The Health Of It!" What do you guys think???

I am getting into the habit of checking this thread before I head to bed, and again after my morning walk. Puts me in a mindset to get up and go in the morning and also a way to sort out where I stand after I've walked!! Gee, does that make any sense??

Vicki- I'm originally from Little Rock. Grew up there. Have you lived there long? Thank you for your first hand insight on training and walking the 1/2 and walking the whole! I look forward to your journey as you prepare for the marathon in January! You will be a great source for many of us! Thank you!

Ashley, have fun at your graduation!

Good night all!!

He did the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on May 2 and wanted to do it in sub-four hours....he finished in 3:54!!!

Good for him- and to you too for being such a supportive wife! Did you make the trip too and stand in the rain? Wasn't it a dreadful day?

This year, my DH (56 and a triple heart "by-passer" (almost 6 years ago) got "jiggy with the piggy" his first marathon try in over 25 years and finished in 4:12:30 ! I am so proud of him - he ran with the 4:15 pace team but still had some left and made it a "bit quicker" at the end! A wonderful sight to see DH finish so strong, he trained long and hard and it did pay off! He's "hooked" and will probably run another in October - I knew when he finished so well that it was only the beginning and I "know" sub four will be his next goal - the hints are already surfacing ;)

And, my DNiece Nikki (Evansmom) (member of this thread - flying pig avatar) ran on a relay team. She has run the full Flying Pig before - this year she ran the leg before her DDad and she ran his leg too, with him so they finished the race together! Pretty special ::yes::

Keep up the good work for yourself and will see you in January and if you make the Flying Pig "an annual affair" hope to see you in Cincy next May!!

I think I'm gonna make up a tshirt that says I'm doing this half marathon "For The Health Of It!" What do you guys think???

Yes - so is it copyrighted ;) or is it one that you are "designing" and we can have some made too?

This is a WISHer's "haven" thread for inspiration - can't go wrong checking this one out morning and night (trola2 you are such a good role model)

mishoe01 - wow - I would love to be a "part" of your journey - have you seen the DIS meet pix from Dec 2003 - there are some 1/2 marathoners in those pix too.

We'll get Ohmom (Molli) and Evansmom (Nikki) and myself together for a photo too ::yes::

Hey everyone - good luck with training and see you again soon!

No copyright grammy- I was just gonna make up a shirt that said that. I'd be happy to make up extra iron ons and send them out if you're interested- just let me know. I want to see if I can scan the marathon weekend logo with Mickey and put that on there as well- so it says
Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend- 2005
For The Health of it.

I've seen shirts that say "Kicking Asphault" that runners wear. I think that is hysterical- but I dont know if I could wear that one. HA! We could make it say- Kicking Asphault at the WDW Marathon 2005.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is not the official WISHwalkers shirt- just one for us to play in.

I love the idea and theme of the logo. I would love to have an iron on as well if somebody will walk me through how to use them. I have never done an iron on before. I know, please don't slam me.:D .

I love this thread as well. I am more motivated now than I have been in a while. After joining Curves last week and getting my 3x's a week in, I plan to go 3x's this week and TM 2x's (maybe three if I can get going next Saturday). Thanks for all of the inspirational posts.

Keep up the great work everyone, we are going to have a blast!
