I had originally wanted to eat at Boma on our next trip, but the kids keep coming up with requests for TS. I do want to tour AKL after our AK day, so I'm thinking of just eating at Mara. We are on the plan, and I'd like to not pay oop for more than I have to. Do they have zebra domes, and can you get them as your dessert on the dining plan? And how is the African stew?

Yes, they do have Zebra Domes in Mara. You can use a snack credit to purchase them (there are a couple in each container) Mara would be a counter service meal which doesn't include a dessert. If I were you, I would just have a snack there and eat somewhere else. You can still enjoy looking around the resort. I don't remember them offering stew when I was there but I could be wrong!

The stew (in a bread bowl) is on the menu on this site. So you can't get the zebra domes as your dessert? Or any dessert? I know it is counter service. The kids have come up with enough requests to fill all of our table service!

I think I'd just like to play this day by ear. I'm thinking of a late breakfast at Rainforest (we are doing HDDR so I'll have to buy one meal anyway). We loved dinner there last year, but I'm trying to keep oop costs low. Then we'll eat dinner whenever we are hungry at a counter service place. Then we want to go to AKL to see the animals and hear the storyteller. I guess we could just pick up some zebra domes then. I just want to try some of the great snacks I hear mentioned on DIS.

You get dessert with CS unless you use it for breakfast. Hope that helps
That's right. I forgot. It was normally something prepackaged in the parks (like cookies, a brownie, a plastic bowl full of "cheesecake") Maybe they would include the Domes as a dessert? They had other offerings from Boma's dessert selections in Mara.

Mara was very good as a CS. They have great desserts including the domes (in the fridge case). I think you'd be happy eating there.

Thanks for the positive review. It is definitely a possibility.

Zebra Domes count as a dessert if you use a CS. We stayed at AKL in November and ate at the Mara quite often. The domes come in a plastic container and usually contain around 4-6. Wonderful to keep a few for breakfast the next morning'!

Yes, they have zebra domes, yes you can get them as dessert on your dining plan. The African stew is WONDERFUL!.. I love it!
Also.. when we stayed at AKL, I also got a side with my African stew because they said all the other meals come with one, like fries or something. I would usually get the fruit salad and put it in the refrigerator for later since the African stew was more than I could eat.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear! The stew just sounded different-not your normal cs food. And they have hotdogs on the kids menu, so my dd will be happy. dd10 will be happy with pizza, so everyone can get what we want. I know Tusker House and Flametree get alot of good reviews, but I don't know that my kids would be happy there. Since we won't have to worry about making a reservation time, I can check the storyteller time when we get there, and eat before or after! This sounds perfect!

I have to say, THE BEST desert I ever had was from Mara.
Strawberry cheese cake to die for. I can't wait to get it again!

I had the stew there last month, mmmmmmmm! And the zebra domes, double mmmmmmmmmm! DS and I were on DDP and the cashier said that we could each get a small orange juice (in addition to the bottles of Powerade that we had). That was a nice surprise and sure tasted good later in the afternoon!

We really enjoyed Mara for breakfast! And for snacks! We were never there at lunch, but I'm sure we would have liked it. In the dining area (inside) there were masks and crayons so the kids could color their own masks, which they really liked doing!
I loved Mara for the price, the store that was included, for how well they worked with our dietary restrictions, and for the speed!

While the food at Boma was good, I really did not enjoy my dinner there because it was just way too loud! I know, everything is loud, but I literally could not hear the people at my own table speaking! It was a bit over the top with the noise!

Awesome! :thumbsup2 This is where we'll be dining our first night. I can't wait to try the African Stew. I've been to Boma's and love the zebra domes, so I'll be sure to order those.

Can someone tell me what is in the African Stew? Is it spicy? I'm thinking of eating there in Sept and I was just wondering.:goodvibes

Anyone with info on the African Stew?? I would also like to know more about it. Thanks!!!!!

The African stew is wonderful...we stayed at AKL last November and I got it for lunch 3 times! It's not spicy at all...sort of a mild coconut curry...it had just a tiny bit of sweetness to it. Big chunks of chicken, potatoes, carrots...probably some onions, too, but I can't remember for sure. And it came in a bread bowl that, if I remember correctly, tasted like it had garlic and butter sprayed/smeared on the outside. If you've ever had the coconut curry chicken soup at Boma, it is very similar.

I didn't know you could get a side with it (from a previous post), but I remember my son got the pizza one day and was told he could get fries with it as a side. I thought it was a little strange but he got his two favorite foods so he was very happy.

The Mara African stew is good, but not as authentic as it could be. I had friends who were from Ethiopia and they made incredible stew-- it was ox based.

Mara's African stew is good, but more of a goulash than the ox stew my friends would make. The Mara stew had potatoes, peas, carrots, chicken in a mild tasting cumin/curry base. It was very very mild. It was good and different than most CS offerings.

I remember we were also allowed to get a side item. I didn't want to get French Fries so I got breadsticks.

My son got a pizza and it was good as well. He also got a breadstick.

As other posters said, its' not spicy. My dd won't eat spicy, but she'll always share my stew with me!

I thought that it had more than on kind of meat in it, maybe some kind of pork.. but I could be wrong. It does have a sweet undertone.. but it's a very nice flavor.
I'm not good with detecting spices I guess, I don't usually like curry.. I didn't know this had a curry flavor. If it does, then I guess I do like curry..lol. Maybe I just don't like indian curry.

It's a large portion, the bread bowl is big. They even put the top part of the bread from the hole against the bowl, and pour stew on that too. It easily fed me and my daughter (she's 9) with some left over too.

It's my favorite cs meal! But I'm partial to anything AKL too:) Gimme Boma any day!

We stayed at AKL this past February and had dinner at Mara twice - cheese pizza, ham & cheese sandwich, chicken Ceasar salad, butternut squash soup, and the sweet potato chips. Everything was made fresh and was excellent. The only bad thing I had was a Paw Print Brownie. Yuck!! Dry and zero flavor. One think I did notice, however, was that not all the items that are listed on the AllEars menu were available. For instance, a fish sandwich is listed online but they never had it. When we were there it wasn't crowded at all, so maybe they weren't carrying the full menu during value season.
