Managing two use years

Do you guys think if I treat these as seperate annual vacations and then split my direct Riviera points when I buy them to 75 points each to compliment each seperate contract, it would be a good plan? The good thing is we are super flexible with when we can take vacations
If I was going to have 2 UYs and one was already February, my second UY would be Aug…basically 6 month difference…and use my Feb UY for Feb-July trips and Aug UY for travel between Aug thru Jan. That way, if you need to cancel - you don’t have to worry about missing your banking deadline or, if already banked or borrowed, you’ve got time to reuse or rent the points…and I say this as someone who has 5 (yes, 5) uYs.

Transferred points will work online at the 7 month mark but not during the home resort period unless they are same resort and UY

In this case, using for different trips is an ideal way. We have three UYs for this reason.

Now, we do sometimes book some nights on one and some on the other, and ask to link so we don’t change rooms…and so far have never had to.

If you buy direct RIV and split, be aware you will lose the ability to use all those RIV points for a single trip…and because your resale points won’t be good at RIV, it may or may not work.
Do you call member services when you ask to link? So they don't mind linking from two different contracts? I have decided that I am definetely not going to split my Riv points after posting here especially since it will be my only direct. I didnt think about the super short stays that would entail for that resort, definetly doesn't work for us, we like to stay in the same room at least 5 days

If the contract is a larger contract at $95pp…. I don’t think it’s a good enough deal for all of your future headaches….It wasn’t long ago that people were getting AKV for $80pp….

@Girlstar30 I know you’re super excited about getting into DVC but you’re doing a lot of mental gymnastics here. You’ve come here asking for everyone’s advice and we are all willing to help but the reason you’re asking us is because we’re more experienced with DVC ownership and have a lot of knowledge. We all want you to have decades of DVC fun, not heartache!

5 use years is crazyyy

So you don't regret it or find it too confusing? I'm the type that will not cancel a vacation unless I'm on my deathbed 🤣🤣

Would I prefer everything in 1 use year? Yes. Do I find it confusing or hard to have 2 use years? Not really. I actually added more points to the smaller FebUY as I was needing more points for the stays I was using those points for.

This is what you need to hear, listen to the wisdom of experience. These people know what they're talking about. When everyone is telling you no, it's for good reason. It's hard once you start understanding DVC to not want to rush all in and have all the points/contracts you want at once. But slowing down and getting used to using the product will help you tremendously on your Disney journey!

Never one to back down from a challenge lol but I think I'm going to treat these as seperate annual vacations and then split my direct Riviera points when I buy them to 75 points each to compliment each seperate contract, do you think that could be a good plan?
Do you mean 75 in two separate UY's. I'd be a hard no on that one!

Thank you all for your input, I truly appreciate it and have gotten more knowledge than i knew before from everything you all had to say ❤️

I have 2 UY Feb and Dec. But each contract is typically going to be used for a specific purpose in my traveling (VDH only used there, VGC only used there) and I travel alot, this year I have 7 Disney trips already booked so spreading out UY isnt as big of a deal. The dashboard DVC has is not beginner friendly imo and makes it a bit harder. If your ultimate goal is to use the points all at once then having 2 UY's isnt a great choice.

Wow 7 disney trips, that's awesome! We live in California so I feel like that's going to happen to us, were going to look and be like vdh or vgc is open this day, let's go! Even though the intention is for Disney World trips mostly 🤣🤣 at least i am in california so I don't have to fly to use them all the time

FWIW we just got a contract in process for what will now be our 2nd UY (and 4th home resort); and for our specific purposes I don't think it'll be much of a headache.

We usually book split stays so I'm already using 2 different contracts at the 11 month window anyway. And I rarely ever foresee that we'd need to combine points at 7 months.

It's also a very real possibility we could be looking to sell off something within the next 5 years, so the ability to transfer points into another membership and then sell the contract stripped is a big plus in my eyes. Having another membership also gives you the ability to have 2 more active room waitlist requests, which could be quite useful to have. So there can definitely be some positives with a 2nd UY.

But yeah as others have stated if you stick to mostly using them for separate trips or for split stays I don't see a huge issue, but if you regularly plan on combining points then I would reconsider. And I definitely would not have a direct contract split into 2 different UYs (which is essentially the same as having 2 different contracts at the same resort in 2 different UYs) as I feel that would truly be unnecessarily overcomplicating everything. That's just my $.02 anyway. :-)

Yes I'm really glad I posted this thread because I was sure that i was a genius by splitting the 75 point contract in two and evening the playing field 🤣🤣 i think that would have been the biggest mistake of all if I decide to go through with this! I would be PISSED if I could only book 3-4 riv nights at a time and how confusing having to juggle that too. Really love this group!

BTW, I have been using Fidelity for this new contract and now i understand what people meant when they said, "I used Fidelity and it was fine but I had to watch it like a hawk." I just got the contract for my review and they put the wrong last name for my wife 🤣🤣

We are finding that boarding our dogs and flights are whats costing us so much $$ to do all the trips.

You will 100% be looking to see if any random VGC or VDH rooms pop up or you will have some waitlists.

If a waitlist comes through then all the points need to be in that UY… you can’t ask them to borrow from a different UY to fulfill the waitlist and it will go to the next person in line. Another reason it’s better to have a pile of points available in the same UY to use as a war chest at 7m.

There is also a huge difference with someone who has 2000 points with 2 UYs and someone with 200 points and 2 UYs.

You really need 110% of what you think you will need in each UY to book at your preferred property in a room category that has reasonable availability.

Didn't know that you can't borrow to fulfill waitlist request! Learn something new every day! Now I'm totally seeing the overall picture of the headache of two uy 🫠

You can borrow but you cannot get them back to the original UY. The points move to the next UY and live there even if you cancel. Don't forget you get OTU points with each contract.

But if I have a waitlist going and they're not in there yet they won't borrow it for me they'll just move along is what I'm getting 😪 lol
