Managing Hypoglycemia

So I went to the doctor a few days ago to get my lab results (routine bloodwork, thyroid problems). My thyroid is all messed up again, so he is increasing my medication for that. However, it seems my glucose level was low (59) so the doc says I need to cut out sugar.

I've been trying to read up on all this, and I'm wondering if my glucose was off because my thyroid was so out of whack. I have noticed some signs of low blood sugar over the last few months.

Anyway, I know I needed to cut back on sugar anyway, but knowing I need to cut it out altogether is throwing me for a loop. I am hooked on carbs and I'm a chocoholic. To make matters just a little more complicated, my daughter is allergic to dairy, so we already eat a modified diet. I'm having a hard time with all of this, not to mention it's kind of depressing. Diabetes is rampant on both sides of my family, but I never expected to have any trouble until I got older. I'm only in my mid-30s.

Any advice from those familiar with controlling this. And am I going to have a lot of trouble incorporating these changes into our dairy-free diet? And finally, could this just be a result of my thyroid being way too low (and subsequently could it fix itself once I start taking the higher dosage of thyroid hormone)?

Try the Atkin's diet. I've lost alot of weight and maintained a healthy weight for 3 years now. Yes, you will have to give up carbs during the induction phase but you can add them back in slowly over time. An yes, set a goal, if you reach it reward yourself with one indulgence, but only reward yourself every 2 months and only for that single serving.

I know people who have been able to stop taking prescription diabetes drugs after only 8 months of this diet because their blood profile improved so much. He went from shots to pills to just daily monitoring.

My Dr. could not beleive that I lowered my cholesterol and tryglycerides by at least 50%. 385 to 180!

You can find Atkin's info online or go to your local book store and grab the latest edition.

Your cravings will go away after a few days. Your weight loss will start within a week.....if you follow it. It is the easiest diet out there and once you become aware of your daily carb limit you will find it to be easy to manage.

It is a lifestyle change but it is so worth it. Try it for 30 days if you don't improve I'll buy the book from you.

Here is an example:
Breakfast- Egg white omlette--as much as you want. Load it with a onions, peppers, mushrooms. As much bacon or sausage as you want.

Snack- almonds dusted with dark chocolate

Lunch- Chef salad-ham, turkey, hard boiled eggs, olives and a light amount of dressing.

Snack- lunch meat, cheese, olives, or veggies

Dinner- Steak chicken or fish- Side of veggies- no corn or carrots too high in sugar

Drink alot of water- no more pop or diet pop. no fruit juice. just water or green tea.

Consult your Dr. and add in some brisk 2-3 mile walks every other day.

Good Luck.
-YO..........................PM me in 6 months, I'd love to hear about your success.

Sorry you are dealing with this health challenge.

It might be worth seeing a dietitian to get some help planning out menus for you and your family.

My son is allergic to a number of preservatives/additives and I need to eat gluten free, dairy free and am a vegetarian (working towards vegan). I see a dietitian a few times a year just to make sure we are on track and that everyone is having their nutritional needs met.

Your doctor might be able to recommend someone that could help.

Hope you are feeling better soon:hug:
