Mamma Mia 2

I too, LOVE the Broadway show, seeing it for the 4th time next weekend. HATED the first movie!!!
Loved loved loved this movie. I am shocked, but dying to see it again. Dd is also, she also loves the show and hated the first movie.

I hated this one. I’m a super fan of the first one but this one was depressing and sad and just stupidly done. They messed up the story big time. And for the Meryl doesn’t do sequels line...guess what? She did it so why not be in the whole thing? So dumb.

I agree- it was horrible. First one was good, this one they blew it.

I thought it was better than the first one. I saw it on Broadway a couple of times. I hated Meryl as Donna. One of the "key" points in the show was Donna had Sophie when she was *20* and Sophie was getting married at *20*. Meryl was way, way, way over 40.

I agree, there were several "plot holes" in this film. Ones that could have been easily fixed. For example, Donna did go home when she found out she was pregnant. Her Mom, who was very religious, kicked her out. They didn't really mention it, but I don't think Cher's character was "very religious"...

The actors who played the young versions were excellent. They did a good job of casting to have them resemble the "older" versions.

I think they could have handled Donna's character in a different way. Did Meryl not want to do this movie? Is that why?

Loved the Broadway show which I saw 3 times over the years it ran.

The movie was ok. I despise Meryl Streep so that was a turn off for me.

I adore Abba and Cher so I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I normally like Meryl Streep's acting, but I tried watching the first Mama Mia and thought she was so awful in it I couldn't finish the movie! Also the "jokes" weren't funny to me, and some of the singing was painful. When friends asked me to go with them to see the sequel, I almost said no, but thought I'd give it a try. I ended up really enjoying it! Meryl wasn't really (except for one small part) in this one. They had Lily James playing Meryl's character when she was young, and she was MUCH better--great voice, and much more believable in the role of a bubbly free-spirit.

There were a lot of parts that made me laugh out loud, and I even teared up once or twice too. The music was a lot of fun of course. My only complaint is that it was about 20 minutes too long, otherwise I thought it was great

I have mixed feelings. I did enjoy seeing "old friends" again and the new cast members were terrific. However, I loved the first one because of the pure over the top joy and silliness. It wasn't meant to be serious - they were laughing and I laughed with them. I could forgive plot holes, etc. because it was all about the "romp" and not meant to be taken seriously. This one tried to have too much depth and lost it's joy.

My favorite moment was at the end when they did the dance number with old/new together.

My friends and I speculated about #3 coming with a Ruby/Fernando great grandparent generation entering the picture.

Saw it last night.
It was good but not nearly as good as I was anticipating it would be.
The first one is an all time favorite for me and I wish they had used more of the original songs in the second one.
I mean come on the one scene would have been a perfect opportunity for Take a Chance On Me.

Saw it last weekend with the cast of a production of Mamma Mia that I am currently in! Was lots of fun and the group loved it! Kind of fun to see the back stories of the dads! It was great hearing a number of the original songs mixed in with many other great ABBA songs that I was not as familiar with. :cool1:

Guessing you didn't stay after the credits? :-)

Was there something good after ALL the credits were over?
My niece would never allow us to stay that long. It was already midnight when it ended.

Edit ok I read about it.
Meh still would have liked to see it at that one part near the end of the movie.

So, if Fernando supposed to be her grandfather? If so, was he supposed to know who her grandmother was before she showed up?

I think he is but if it was a one night stand then he would have no clue that she was her grandmother.

That was what I was speculating would be the plot of a possible #3 - that he and "Ruby" are Donna's parents, thus he is the great grandpa of the upcoming baby. The flashbacks would have to be in other countries, but so far this series isn't into keeping details straight so that wouldn't be an issue!
