Mama Melrose or Sci-Fi Diner

Hello Everyone,

I have looked at this site often, but have never posted. My husband and I are traveling to Disney in early December. We have one full day at MGM.

I am trying to decide where we should eat dinner. Please give opinions on Mama Melrose and Sci-Fi. I would like to know about their food, the service, food suggestions, and why one or the other is the best choice.

Now, if you don't like either of these, I am open to suggestions. We have even thought of leaving after the Osborne lights and having a late dinner in DTD.

Ok, so let your opinions roll...I am anxious to hear your thoughts!

I liked both places but would probably choose Sci Fi simply for the experience of it. The food I thought was fine, others will disagree. However, the attraction is the place itself, sitting under "the stars" in your car with the B Movie Clips playing is just fun. It blends attraction with eatery very well.

The servers at both places were good, the food was fine at both places. I think it really comes down to what you want to eat and what kind of atmosphere your in the mood for.

Sci Fi is nice for the experience but the food is ordinary.

Mama Melrose is pretty ok by me!

My husband and I were facing the same decision. We too are going early december and spending a full day at MGM. Typically I would choose Brown Derby but do not feel it is worth two credits. After much discussion we decided on sci-fi. We figured even if the food was mediocre it would be a totally different dining experience and fits perfectly with the MGM theme. So it may be our best bet is burger and shakes but hopefully it will add to our trip.

Sci-fi does sound like fun to me, but the only thing I have heard is that if you are only a party of 2, you will not get a car, but a booth instead. I am afraid that might take away from the experience. Has anyone ever had this happen and if so, how was it not sitting in the car? Thanks! : )

We thought Sci-Fi was really cool. The food was fine too. If you do go there you have to get the onion rings. They are the best we've ever had and the best on property!!! When you check in at the booth just tell them you want to sit in a car and not a booth. You might have to wait alittle to be seated but they should be able to accommadate you.

As for Mama Melrose, we love it there. The food is really good and the restaurant itself is really nice and we have always had good servers there. I would say go there if you are looking for better food.

Here's something else to think about. How about 50's PTC? Great food and atmosphere!

We have been to Sci-fi twice as a party of two, and were seated in a car both times.

We actually love sci-fi and mama melrose, go with the food you would prefer the most.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I'd chose Mama Melrose in a second over Sci-Fi.

The atmosphere at Sci-Fi was pretty cool, but the 'coolness' faded after a while. The food was pretty ordinary.

We ate at Mama Melrose for the first time last year, and everyone in our party was VERY pleased with the food and service. To me, it's like a 'real restaurant' compared to a fast food place.

It's been a while (9 years) but we thought the sci-fi was great. It is truly a unique experience that should be tried at least once. If either of you are movie fans, then definitely give it a try. The food is nothing special, with the exception of the milkshake. They were incredible.

We were there as a two-some, and we definitely sat in a car. Don't let them stick you in a booth! When you go to the hostess, tell them you want a car and are willing to wait. It may cost you 5-10 minutes, but it's worth it. They had another two-some in the "back seat" with us, or maybe we were in the back-seat, but you didn't really notice since everyone faces forward.

I've heard the food and Mama Melrose's is good, but to me, Italian food does not interested me on vacation, too heavy to then walk around on afterwards, and I can get great Italian at home. Sci-Fi is a pure Disney experience, mediorce food and all.

We like both and just did both this August. Sci-Fi's has good burgers, fries and shakes. We never venture beyond the basics there. Mama Melrose's food is pretty good. We (including four adults) were more than satisfied with our meals. I think the people that knock this restaurant are comparing it to their favorite Italian place back home. Mama Melrose is probably going to lose more of those comparisons than it wins. But it's no Olive Garden either.

By the way, the best Italian we've had in Orlando was at Mama Della's over at Universal's Portofino Hotel.

Not so!!! when DH and I went in May 05, we had a car! I think we had to wait a short time for one to open up, no big deal...
We plan to eat at Sci-Fi again in May 07, the food is alright, like an applebees or similar, but the experience is unique!
We will again wait for a car if we have to!
