Male vs. Female Nurses

during 19 facial surgerys and associated hospital stays, i had more nurses than i care to remember,, my favorite floor nurse was a male, he was the most caring, best bedside mannor etc,, he even threatened to fire a nurse that left my iv alarm going for more than 5 minutes.

my favorite surgical prep was an old lady that was typical grandma personna, she was thee best ever at installing surcical ivs,, she could hit a vien in a brick wall.

As long as they are really good at what they do, it doesn't matter to me. I actually haven't considered going to only a female doctor vs a male doctor. It seems silly.

A male OB/Gyn did the c-section for both my children. When you go for pregnancy checkups you rotate between five doctors and one mid-wife, three male doctors, two female, female mid-wife. With the exception of the mw, the male doctors were much more compassionate at this particular office.

I would rather have a bad female nusre then a good male one, yuko, I only want a women to give me a sponge bath

I'm female and it makes no difference to me what sex my doctors and nurses are.

I'm a nurse and my gyn, pcp and dentist are all women. My DD's pcp and dentist are women as well. The last time that I had a male physician care for me, he said "Oh, you're one of those girls with two last names". Since I kept my last name after MARRIAGE, I said "Actually, I'm one of those WOMEN with two last names". His nurse was cracking up :rotfl2: After working with male physicians for almost twenty years, and this is my personal generalized findings, I feel that a lot of them can be condescending to women. I find that female physicians are more compassionate. I find the total opposite with nurses, though. The male nurses that i know have more compassion, and skill, in their pinky that most female nurses have in their entire bodies (me included :guilty: )

I've had both male and female nurses and male and female doctors and I couldn't care less which they are.

I had a male nurse take care of me after I had my second dd-even cleaned me up and everything! Didn't bother me at all-I was so exhausted and so happy, I probably would've let the janitor do it ;)

Male nurse...no thanks. Well, I've only been in the hospital to have my children, so that is what I'm basing it on. I just consider nursing to be more personal, more nurturing, and I wouldn't feel comfortable with a man in that position.

The men who choose nurturing positions usually do so precisely because it is a good fit with their temperment. Men can be just as attentive and caring as women.

When I was in the hospital after giving birth, (I was 25), the nursing supervisor came in with a young man..(20 or 21 yr old); said that he was nursing student at the local college and "would I mind if he attended to my needs and checked me out?" Check what out? Cathetor? stitches? I didn't ask and I didn't want him touching anything. She was a little put out..grumbled about 'he's a professional".. but..welllll.. nope...uh..uh..nope.. nada.
But as a general rule...i go more by how I like the doctor and my comfort level.... same with a nurse. My dentists are a husband/wife practice..but I don't particularly care for the wife.. she takes too long..it's like she's timid and trying to be too gentle. My OB/GYN is a man..he left one practice after 15 years and I followed him cause I trust him so much. My neurologist is female...and my G/P is a male..but his wife is also a G/P who works part time in his office..and I like her too..

The only thing I really prefer a woman for is gynocologist. Other than that, male doctor or nurse is fine.

i hope you are being funny - trust me you would not want a bad nurse, it coiuld be a matter of life or death. what a very silly remark! a lot can be diagnosed and observed from a blanket bath, nobody is interested in your bits and pieces!

My ob/gyn has always been a male. Funny story though...when I got pregnant with my dd, now almost 13, I chose to use Boston doctors since I was on the 'old' side. Found a terrific doctor, delivered at Beth Israel. Now, my mom says to me..."Great choice honey. You always want a nice Jewish ob..you know how well they take care of their own moms!" Ah, okay Mom! But, he was terrific. I did have a wonderful male nurse at BI....the best nurse I had the whole time.
My pcp is a woman and I like her but her 'bedside' manner is not terrrific.
I have no issue with my doctor/nurse being whichever sex...just be good.

The only thing I care about when it comes to a nurse is that they can hit a vein on the first try. If they can do that, I don't care if they're male, female, or straight off the mothership...they're okay in my book.

If you are a woman, would you have a problem with being cared for by a male nurse?
Not in the least. They are a professional and just doing their job.

Do you feel the same way about a male doctor?
Yes

I prefer having a female gyn but all of my other Dr's are male and no problem with that or with male nurses.

When I was in labor with my dd I had a female nurse. She was the worst. Some of my hilights of my night spent with her :She told me I was alot nicer when I first came in. :confused3 At one point I told I don`t feel well I think I am going to throw up. She told me to hold it. :confused3 I ended up throwing up all over her. :rotfl2: Then she tells me can you hurry up I don`t won`t to be stuck working overtime. :confused3

At around 7:00 in the morning a guy walks in and says Hi I am Mark I am going to be your nurse the rest of the way. I looked at my Dh and said no way I have a female dr..

Well Mark was excellent. He helped me through the rest of my labor and delivery. He told me what a great job I was doing. He talked to me about his family and his vacation he had just came back from. He kept my family informed in the waiting room. He was excellent. I think I told him I loved him after I gave birth. The only problem he kept calling my Dh the wrong name. :rotfl2:
I do not have a problem with male nurses.

In general, I prefer female medical professionals. I've had better experiences with them in terms of how they listen to me and relate. For GYN care, I definitely want women.

I wouldn't refuse to be cared for by a male nurse.

Here's what I said:I just consider nursing to be more personal, more nurturing, and I wouldn't feel comfortable with a man in that position.

...meaning that nurses in general(I never said women nurses) seem more nurturing and more personal than doctors(also no gender specified) and if someone is going to be holding my hand(or leg as the case may be in childbirth :rotfl2: ), rubbing my back, seeing how the baby is latching on while breastfeeding etc like nurses do when I'm in labor and after I've had the baby, I want it to be a woman, because that's who I feel comfortable with in that situation, not because a man can't be a nurturing.

Like I said, if it was something other than labor and delivery, I don't think I'd care.

No, I don't care if it's a male nurse or a female nurse. Same with doctors, although I prefer to see a female. Both may parents are doctors so it's got nothing to do with sex really. I just like women's bedside manner better but will see a male if he's highly recommended. As for my OB/GYN- that's a female. No ifs, ands, or buts.

As long as they are competent and professional, I really don't care.

I have a male GP. He truly cares for your health and always makes you feel comfortable. It also helps that my family sees him also, so he knows my family's medical history.

I have a male GYN also. I am comfortable with him and have no problems. But he also have a female nurse practitioner. I usually see the her because it is easier to get an appointment with her, and she is just really sweet.
