Hello – You can call me Whip (33) – I’m a mom of 3 (DD8, DS3, DH37). I’m also a Retired Balloon Artist (Retired because I hurt my arm) and a habitual Disney Trip Dreamer from New England. Our previous Disney trips include – Honeymoon at the Polynesian in Sep 1996 and a tag-along Convention trip at the Contemporary in Feb 2002 (it was supposed to be Sep 01 but the convention was postponed due to 09/11). This will be our first Family trip there for no other reason other than VACATION.

So you have the WHO – Let me give you the scoop on The WHEN: I think to myself . . . wouldn’t it be fabulous if the kids wake up Christmas morning and their bags are packed and ready to go . . . It could be their present from Mom and Dad. Then I thought – half the fun of getting such a great gift is being able to brag to your cousins that you got a Disney trip for Christmas – so let’s make it the day after. I settled on 12/26/08 – 01/03/08 (Actually late 12/25 – 01/04/08 but that’s covered under HOW). I’ve struggled with a creative way to break the news and I have only recently decided on a homemade “tear the page” calendar – the first page is going to say something crazy like 250 days until our Disney vacation and we are going to have DD tear off the top page when it will drop to 120 days – Then I’m going to make a big “ta do” – I can’t believe I messed up the calendar then the next page will be like 50 then 10 days etc then 0. I’m also going to do some photo shopped images of them doing wacky things at Disney etc . . . I hopping to have my daughter pass out with shock.

WHERE: I like to move around to different hotels when we vacation so I originally booked three separate Disney resorts – AKL, WDL, and CBR. As if that wasn’t enough moving around I also wanted to plan one night at the Gaylord Palms since I have been there on business and its fabulous (I wanted to share with my family). Then I priced a rental car to get us from hotel to hotel – An Economy box is near $700.00 that week! I called Disney to see if they would move our bags and I was told that any other time of the year it probably wouldn’t be a problem – but that week it is so busy they could not. This – Should have been my first clue to the Chaos that is the week in between Christmas and New years. Once I got the Christmas gift idea in my head there was no backing down. I ignored the warning signs and moved full steam ahead. I changed our reservation to just CBR for the whole week and I have nearly changed it three or four times already to AKL – It’s a dream of mine to have one of those Savanna view rooms but then I found the gifts of a lifetime website – and now I have my heart set on doing something special with that instead. We will save the AKL trip for another year.

WHY: My DS will be four and he has never been to WDW – my DD was 2 when we went in 2002 and I have always felt bad that he hasn’t gone yet. Let’s just say money was always an issue when I owned my business – you could never spend anything not knowing when your next paycheck would be. Also my DD’s 9th birthday is during our trip this year – she is growing up so fast – I just want her to feel the magic one more time before her pre-teen skepticism takes hold. Now I have a regular paying job so that money is definitely is paying for this splurge.

HOW: We live about an hour away from the airport so I’ve decided to book us a room at the onsite hotel for Christmas night. I know, I know – it doesn’t make for the most magical of Christmas nights but I think it will be worth it not to have to get out of bed at 3am to barely get to the airport on time. I know myself and I won’t be able to sleep and I will drive my husband nuts that the alarm won’t go off. Our flight is at 6 am so staying at the airport we won’t have to get out of bed until 4:30am – then we can mosey – take our time. We can go swimming at the hotel the night before and order room service and a movie – the kids will love that. We will get to start our vacation hours after the big surprise. We are doing a similar thing at the end of our trip where we are staying at the Orlando Hyatt the last night – again – just so we don’t have to rush off to the hotel. We are flying Delta and we land at 11:20am. Because of the warnings I have since read about Christmas week – I’m hiring a Car to bring us to the hotel. This will help get us going quicker and more relaxed than the Disney bus. I was planning on using the bus one way but then I found out its only 10.00 more for the car round trip – No Brainer. In addition to booking the CBR all week I signed us up for the Disney deluxe dining plan (I know way to much food – but we like nice restaurants – and with the increased food costs that week it seemed to make sense for us). We will see how it goes – I’m going to track to see if we get our money’s worth.

THE GRAND PLAN – Was to have no plan. DH hates when I over plan trips – then the more I researched Christmas week I became convinced that if I do not plan – we will all be miserable. We will not find nice restaurants to eat at – we will not feel the magic as much as we should. So I woke up early on 180 ADR Day and booked 96 credits worth of food I believe. All that we were entitled to under the DDD. We are eating at a lot of wonderful places:

We purchased the 9 day park hopper without water park so I’m hoping to make good use of that. I have not planned which parks on which days but I hope our ADR’s will help guide the schedule a bit. Other activities we have planned are the BBB (Castle and Cool Dude package) at 8 am on DD’s 9th birthday and hopefully a “Gifts of a lifetime” surprise, CRT lunch and park fare dinner (Hopefully with fabulous B-day cake) also on that day. I booked the pirate cruise out of our hotel one day and I’m keeping my ear to the ground for the pirate boutique that may or may not be opening in September.

I guess that’s it for now – I’m pretty much waiting on pins and needles until the pixies from gifts of a lifetime contact me. I have no idea how I’m going to be able to keep this a secret – I’m dying to tell them!!!

Well my parents aren't planning a Christmas surprise (I don't think at least), but we are planning on going to DW at Christmas time this year. We were there for Christmas in 1999/2000 (Christmas and New Years), 2004, and 2007. Depending on if my mom can take off of work (she just started a new company so she's very low on the senority), we might be going again!
Hope your surprise goes well!

My DD is out of the house today and I just spent several hours of my Sunday reading one TR - I’m a bit obsessed. An item I want to research now is AK face painting – I saw some photos and we definitely need to work that into the budget for the whole family.

I’ve also decided I’m going to make a wish list for my Orlando trip in early December – The whole goal of this trip (besides business) will be to complete a lot of the souveigneer / making our own magic legwork. Items on the list so far include:

All the current DTD clothing – T-Shirts, dresses, crocks for the whole family
Autograph books and pens
Pressed Penny Paraphernalia
Special Ears
Pin lanyards / pins for kids
New ornament for tree
Another two boxes of potato head parts
Pirate Gear
Hero Gear

This sounds like so much fun! I'm unclear on the calendar thing - you are giving a gift of a calendar and then teasing them with the number of days? Is that right?

Here's the facepainting we just did at AK.

And the cake from 1900 Park Fare that I had ordered DD - it was yummy!

BTW - sorry the pics are so big!!

My gosh - your kids are adorable! Thanks so much for sharing your pictures! Im really excited for the face painting now. Yes - Sorry my calendar description is so confusing - Its going to a be a countdown sort of thing where you rip off a page per day - except its going to be all wrong its going to quickly go down to 0 days. Im going to put photoshopped pictures of the kids on pages - its going to be fun - When I have it all together I will definately share.

Your plan sounds really exciting. I'm sure your kids will be thrilled! We're going after Christmas. None of us has ever been to WDW before and I'm very excited and have been planning obsessively! :rotfl:

We told the kids already and they are excited but also miffed because January seems ages away at the moment! I would have waited but wanted to be able to talk about it w/DH and so forth.

Here's our itinerary so far (it looks like we have a lot of the same ADR's as you):

We're driving from home, leaving on Dec. 29, so we'll have our own car, then DH and the "baby" (who turns 4 in Oct) will drive home and I'll fly with the older ones so they can get back to school by Jan. 8.

Leave on Dec. 29 and drive to Pensacola. Spend Dec. 30 (my birthday) in Pensacola. Leave Dec. 31 and drive to Orlando and stay in hotel in Kissimmee.

Arrive on Jan. 1- drive straight to Epcot from hotel outside Orlando. Do Future World, eat lunch, then check in to Wilderness Lodge. Take boat to Contemporary- dinner at Chef Mickey's at 5:45, perhaps take monorail to Magic Kingdom- maybe see Wishes?

Jan 2- Animal Kingdom, early dinner at Boma, 4pm, then drive to DTD for shopping.

Jan. 3- Sleep in and spend morning at resort. Go to Epcot at lunchtime, do World Showcase, dinner at Askershus, 4:55pm, maybe see IllumiNations if not too late.

Jan. 4- Go to Studios, dinner at Mama Melrose, Fantasmic package.

Jan 5- Magic Kingdom, dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern (no more character dinners! ) might cancel this one if we're too tired.

Jan 6- Magic Kingdom, back to resort early-ish, kids to Cubs Den so we can have adult night at Artist Point, 6:30.

Jan 7- Check out of WL, load car, Breakfast at Crystal Palace, 9:30, spend some time in MK, leave by 1pm, flight leaves at 3pm.

:wizard: Right now I'm anxiously awaiting Disney's putting the packages up for sale for 2009 so we can buy our park hoppers and dining plan. Also looking forward to the park hours coming out. We may or may not take advantage of the EMH's.

Your plan sounds really exciting. I'm sure your kids will be thrilled!

Thanks - Its really hard to keep it secret - Ive almost told my daughter several times - now Im lip locked about the whole thing. We do have alot of the same dining reservations - you are smart to get there after NYE - Ive read terrible things about the crowds. I wish you well with all your plans - WHIP

Surprises are GREAT!! Can't wait to hear more of yours.
(before kids) We went during Xmas & New Years... you are definitely right about having a plan!! It's the only way to do Disney during that time of year. It can get very crazy.

SO . . . I lost 60 lbs last year using sparkpeople. It was really hard work but Im ever so glad I finally did it. Then come Jan 1st and I fell off the wagon hard. While I havent gained a ton of fat back - I havent lost the last 20 I planned on either. I started back with sparkpeople today - Things are going well. I drank all my water - stayed in the calorie range - joined the dis team - It seems I finally found the motivation to finish - 96 deluxe dining plan meal credits.

One thing I have done in an effort to loose the last of the extra poundage - thats really kind of cooky - but totally me - I bought my DH and I adult Tricycles - yes - you read right - ADULT TRICYCLES. I bought them back in early June (With our tax rebate check - nice local company) hoping they would be ready in time for our Cape vacation comming up - well I just heard from the company making them today and they wont be ready until the day we leave! Now DH has to Drive to NY (~3 hr) then back home before we head to the Cape (~3 hr) - Long travel Day - Heres a picture of what they will look like (exept one white and one midnight blue):

Note - DH is not terribly delighted I bought him a Tricycle

I LOVE your plan. It sounds so fun and your kids are going to be so excited when they figure it out. Imagine waking up and finding your going to WDW!!

I use Sparkpeople too - I love it - I was on a roll and starting to lose again and then went on vacation to Tennessee last week. Then it was my birthday today, so work took me out to lunch and family took me to dinner. I need to reign this in and get back on track.

Have you ever checked out WISH here on the DISboards? Its a great place for motivation on losing weight and living healthy.

Can't wait to hear about your trip as you plan - Good luck! And good luck losing weight. Its such a hard battle that never seems to end for me. I was at my goal weight in 2003 an then gained 30 pounds back - now I gotta lose this once and for all. I'll be 40 next Summer - I'm going to do it this time :) I want to be at my goal weight for my next disney vacation.

Whoa - Ran the numbers tonight – Making your own magic is an expensive task.

I really have to stop adding things. Every week or so I’m reading through the boards and I get a “fabulous” idea from someone else’s experience. Here is a list of extras I have added so far. The point at which I didn’t have to convince DH anymore (when applicable) is noted:

Christmas Night hotel stay at the airport – DH Justification – We won’t have to get up at 3 am to make our 6 am flight. Room service, movies, swimming pool, no last minute gift giving trips to the in-laws (DH approved).

Final night hotel stay at the Orlando Airport – DH justification – It’s cheaper (DH approved) than spending our last night at a Disney hotel just to sleep and run off to the airport.

Fancy Shmancy Limo Ride to and from Hotel –DH Justification – Busiest time of the year and it was only 60.00 more than a town car. (Still not DH approved but I booked it anyway!)

Pirate Cruise For 2 – DH Justification – Its right at our hotel and it will give mom and dad - 2 hours – alone – (DH approved) – so we can go shopping! (I think he’s thinking he can convince me to do something else with those two hours).

Super Duper B-day Cake – I can’t wait to get this one worked out – I want a cake that we will remember forever – I’m concerned that because it’s the worst week to go that the bakery won’t be as accommodating – I’m willing to spend the money – I’m just worried about cooperation from the bakery.

BBB – Castle package and a Cool Dude for my little one – Another expense – that just seems totally worth it. Who wouldn’t want to feel like a princess on their birthday? I have never let my daughter dress up as a princess for Halloween so this should be a totally novel experience for her.

GOAL – My daughter is just going to be blown away if we have a scavenger hunt or other special experience just for her – I just cannot wait for a pixie to get back to me with their creative ideas.

Deluxe dining plan – Started with no plan – now we have the deluxe – CRAZY amount of food plan - for a perpetual dieter like myself – but I’m glad we will able to do a lot of the signature restaurants – a break like that in the day should be welcome for us.

Count me in! I followed you over from the restaurant board! popcorn::

What is this? How do you plan a scavenger hunt?

GOAL = Gifts of a lifetime - they organize unofficial yet authorized WDW adventures for all occasions - Im not sure they will allow me to post their website but if you google it - it comes right up - Please tell them I sent you - perhaps that will earn me points for our event! Thanks - Whip

cool. thanks for the tip.

Everything sounds wonderful. I too am surprising my kids with a Disneytrip as a Christmas present, although we will not leave until the 29th. I love your calendar idea! I am buying my girls new suitcases and inside will be a few new disney shirts and things for the trip. I also plan on giving them small gifts each day they are there for them to guess what we are going to do each day. I found tons of Disney items at the Dollar Tree and Micheals.

So - Our tricycles weren’t ready until yesterday and we are leaving on vacation tomorrow. I wanted to bring them to the Cape with us (rail trail) so my husband (and our wonderful neighbor) drive to NY City to pick them up. 9 hours later they bring them home (traffic was awful). I had my immediate family over for dinner / swimming / outdoor movie and we all ran out when they showed up. There they were - one white, one blue - they rode like a dream - 3 speeds - we even had an impromptu tricycle race with different heats - my BIL threatened that the looser would have to "Eat worms- playground style". They were great fun for about a half hour. Then we all come inside, I start cleaning up after dinner and my husband starts eating the leftovers.

About an hour after my husband had come home I go out to look at the tricycles and one (mine - the white one) is gone. Just like that - someone stole it. We looked around the yard and my neighbor’s yard (thinking maybe it rolled away) - Nope - somebody definitely violated our space and stole our property. I’m devastated.

I called the police who came within minutes (Seriously – faster than a medical emergency) and told us that they would look into it. I checked with our insurance about our liability (Turns out insurance deductable is $500.00 - tricycle is $600.00 + homeowners premium will go up = not worth it) - my husband and neighbor even drove around looking for the thieves - it’s gone. I’m in shock. $600.00 like that - flushed down the toilet. I feel violated, angry, and emotional. Nothing like this has ever happened in this neighborhood before and I just can’t believe it.

To top it off DH and I argue about who did what when for about an hour at the top of our lungs before we realize we are both just really upset and taking it out on each other. I determined to not let this ruin our vacation – I’m going to channel my inner Disney! Even though I’m still crying about the bike (I will not be able to replace this year) I’m going to try and remember that no one was hurt during the robbery. My family is intact, healthy and someday – I will replace the tricycle – only in Pink – so no one wants it!
