Making Braids Last and more

Here it is June 12th and we cruised on April 30th and my daughter STILL has her braid in her hair! I am planning to cut the rubber band tonight while she is sleeping so she thinks it just fell out!!

Aprilgail2 - who did your DD's hair? The ship or elsewhere? Thanks! :sunny:

My daughter and I both got out hair done on Nassau. We got all of our hair done. Beware they charge by the braid and then do a bunch of really tiny braids that make it very expensive and very hard to get out. I guess my next question should have been "and how many braids will it be"? Oh well live and learn.

I just took mine out tonight. It took me at least five hours to undo all the braids and what a mess I was left with. I've never had my hair so tortured and I've done plenty to it before such as straightening it and not even that caused as much damage as the braiding. At least half of my hair came out and I'm not exagerating. It was a knotted mess when I got everything out.

My daughter still has hers in and I don't want her to lose half of her hair. Is there some tricks to taking these things out??? HELP!!

After I got everything out I loaded it with cream rinse to try to help with the knots. Even with that I had hand fulls of hair coming out.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your bad experience. My DD had hers done on the ship and we had no problems. They gave us a price beforehand and it turned out costing very close to the "estimate" It ended up being about $35 without tip.

Taking them out was really easy and they stayed in for weeks and weeks. I basically sat her down on the floor in between my knees while I was sitting on the couch. I sprayed detangler spray onto the braid I was going to be un-doing. I then took manicure scissors to cut the rubber band carefully. When the bands were cut I then took the end of a rat tailed comb one of the very thin ones to start at the bottom of the braid and work up to the scalp slowly loosening them. My DD has a very tender head and she said it was a piece of cake. I've heard of people loosing hair and was concerned but I don't think very much of her hair broke off at all. After all braids were opened up she took a shower washing her hair and applying conditioner etc. Her hair wasn't damaged in anyway.

I hope the best for your DD's braid removal!

Thank you so much for your post. I'm going to be trying to take them out soon and I'm going to do what you did. I think that if I do it for her and just take my time we will hopefully be in good shape. Once I've done it I will repost and let everyone know how it went and if her hair was damaged or not.

Thanks again!!

Remember...some of that hair coming out is the stuff you would normally lose day to day...just stuck in the braids the last couple weeks!

Since our cruise last month, I've undone DD's hair and she did have some hair that fell, but it looked like the normal stuff you would lose (no balding patches or such)....now I have done the braids MYSELF on her head and leave those in for a week at a time....and I don't get ANY loss on my braids that I have done in her hair. Now, granted, mommy doesn't do them as tight as on the boat, but it sure is an easy way to have hair during the summer!

First time took me about 20 minutes (half head...used beads as well)...second was 15...next time I'm going for 10!

Don't forget the spray on sunscreen. (ouch burned scalps.)The little girls I saw that didn't have sunscreen looked miserable. Poor angels.

We just returned from the West Coast cruise and I didn't know anything about booking a braid appt ahead of time. My daughter decided on day 3 that she wanted to get the crown type braiding w/ beads. We tried for the next few days to get a cancellation or something and they were totally booked for the rest of the cruise. When we were in Cabo, we decided to have it done by one of the girls on the beach. We paid $20 bucks including tip and she was done in about 20 minutes. She did 12 braids w/ pretty beads at the ends and it looked awesome. Every port we stopped in we were approached by girls to have it done. On board the ship they did it on Deck 9 by the family pool. They had 2 woman set up there.
