Making ADR for person who may or may not be going

My mom and I are taking my DS to WDW in January and our 180 day mark for ADRs is coming up. My dad has expressed interest in going with us, but most likely won't make up his mind until a month or two before (and probably a 75% chance he WILL NOT go). How should I handle ADRs? Do I make reservations for 3 and then if he decides to come try to get him added? Or go ahead and make reservations for 4 and then cancel the 4th person if I need to?

I would make the reservation for 4 and then drop it to 3 if he decides not to go. It's an easy process, I just had to do that with our ADRs. We were originally a party of 11 and then a family had to cancel...i called and they changed all 9 of our ressies to 7 ppl.

I would book for 4, it is easier to take off a person than add a person. I am guessing a party of 3 would be seated at a table for 4 anyway. I booked for the maybes. From what I hear you need to call to reduce the number of people, you can't do it online. But also from what I heard, you are only charged the $10 fee if no one from your party shows up, not if a smaller number shows.

Definitely make the reservation for 4. For only a 1 person difference, I probably wouldn't bother calling to change it, it won't make a difference in your table size anyway. Just tell them only 3 could make it when you show up.

Definitely make the adrs for 4. You may not even need to modify them to 3 if he doesn't go. We were party of 3 last year and we couldn't find adrs for a few places for 3 people, but times would show up for 4 so we booked them for 4 and showed up with 3. It is really no big deal and you don't get charged for 1 person not showing. It is a lot easier showing up with 1 less person than 1 more person. Most of time (but not always), 3 people are sat at a 4 top table anyway.
