I am a mom to a beautiful 12 year old all star cheerleader. She wants to save up for a sweet 16 trip to WDW. I want any ideas for little gifts or surprises. We will be taking my mom, me, my sister, her and a friend of hers.

Subscribing since I'm contemplating the same thing for my DD and two dear friends :). I'm thinking Mandara spa treatments and SeaRayers, and/or maybe another fireworks cruise (which I LOVED for my bday). I'm sure we'll get some great ideas here!!

So, 4 years from now? Well I imagine there will be many more options by then we don't know about yet! For now, I'd say anticipate spa treatments, signature dining, and maybe a private wishes cruise. Perhaps splurge for club level.

I have to agree that with so many announced changes with no completion dates, you might find a lot more options as the date gets closer. For early budgeting and getting a savings goal together now, I agree with everyone else so far and concentrate on where you want to stay, and those special sweet sixteen moments you'll want no matter what changes. All the previous recommendations are the same I would give.

Since your talking long term planning, look into the "disney vacation account" and see if that would be helpful towards your planning and savings goal. (Don't confuse it with DVC (disney vacation club)) that's something different.

We did a great 16th b-day trip for DD. I did a custom cake, Illuminations fireworks cruise with custom cupcakes delivered and let her pick her B-day restaurant.

Custom cupcakes delivered to your boat for the cruise? By Disney, I guess...? Intriguing! Sounds like the perfect add-on to the cruise!

I took each of my DDs on a mother-daughter trip when they were 14. With older DD I picked extras I thought she would like - Hoop De Do Revue, parasailing at the contemporary, an Illuminations cruise (which we were not crazy about and I would not do again.) Many people rave about the Illuminations cruise though. Younger DD wanted to do Discovery Cove, so that was her extra, plus some restaurants she picked.

DD and I are going for her 16th birthday in March. We'll definitely do a custom cake, and I'm going to get Cinderella's Slipper dessert delivered when we have tea at the Grand Floridian (which would be a great place to go on an all girl's trip). It's only $15, so not a "splurge," but just a nice little add-on. There's also a celebration package that you can do at Cinderella's Royal Table, with balloons, cake, and such.

The most important thing for DD on this trip is getting to do Keys to the Kingdom Tour. (She's a big Disney nerd, like me.) Since you have to be 16 to do the tour, she's been waiting to do it for years.

We had YC private dining make our specialty cake and delivered the custom Halloween fondant cupcakes to the boat. The boat was decorated in balloons and a happy birthday signage. It was a great night.

You could have food, alcoholic drinks, other sweets also delivered. We just got done eating at Cape May, so I knew we would not be hungry, so the cupcakes were a great treat at the end of our cruise.

We spent my son's 16 birthday at WDW. I hired Gifts Of A Lifetime to design a scavenger hunt. It was a bit expensive, but it's a once in a lifetime thing and worth every.single.penny. I have a photo of my DH and DS skipping through EPCOT. My son talked about it for weeks afterwards!

We kidnapped my daughter. We invited and paid for a friend. The friend kept the secret. I packed for my daughter which made me nervous. We totally surprised her. We didn't tell my youngest because we didn't think she could keep the secret so she was surprised when I picked her up at school, too. We just put her in the car and headed for the airport. We didn't say where we were going. The idea, her friend, it all surprised her. I tried to pick where she'd like to dine. We stayed in BLT theme park view. It's a surprise we will always remember. It's rare you can surprise someone like that.

My daughter and I just did a girls-only Sweet 16 trip this summer. You don't mention when this trip is happening, but ours was in July. I agree with previous posters, the best things to do on girls-only trips are special meals and spa treatments.

We had sit-down lunches every day (mostly to get out of the heat in July), but it was so nice to sit in a (sort-of) quiet, air-conditioned, usually dim-lighted restaurant for about 60-80 minutes everyday. I really recommend Le Cellier at the Canada Pavilion in Epcot, Be Our Guest in Magic Kingdom, the California Grill in the Contemporary Resort, the Sci-Fi Dine In at DHS, the Yak & Yeti in Animal Kingdom, and Cinderella's Royal Table in Magic Kingdom. I also booked 2 character meals. I wasn't sure that my 16-year-old "adult :)" daughter would care about characters and pictures, but she jumped up from the table at every opportunity and took pictures and selfies.

As a note, many of these restaurants I booked at exactly 180-days out, and scheduled my park days around meals. This might not be everyone's preferred method of, and level of, planning. I had also purchased the Table Service Dining Plan, so many of these meals fell under that plan, and I paid out of pocket for a couple of them. This was a special, never-to-be-repeated trip, and I admit I really splashed out on the meals.

The other thing we did which I thought was really fun and special was a park-free day at the Grand Floridian, including spa treatments and lunch at the Gasparilla Grill. Neither of us had ever been to the GF, and we did this on the 6th day of our trip as a refresher day. I had a massage appointment in the morning, and my daughter got to sleep in as late as she wanted. I had her ride the monorail over to the GF from the Contemporary to meet me at the monorail station on the top floor of the GF. This was conveniently located next to the shopping, and we poked around a little, and then went down to the Grill. It was fun to try a really casual lunch at another resort. She had her spa appointment after lunch, a Signature Pedicure. There are a few requirements for under-18s doing treatments, and one of those was that I had to sit in the salon with her as she had her treatment. No big deal, they let me sit in the pedicure chair next to her and I read my Kindle.

My biggest recommendation for going with teens, especially girls, is to try to work off their schedule. I learned really quickly to give my daughter down-time, and a few sleep-in days, and extra time to get ready in the morning. Because we were not traveling with little kids or her brothers this time, we started our days early, used FP+ to our advantage, and had done many of our big items by lunch. We had those nice sit-down lunches, usually did one more attraction, and then went back to the resort for down-time and rest. Big kids like to be out late at night, so we went back to a park for dinner, and closed the parks most nights, including a 3:00 A.M. night in the Magic Kingdom!!! That was fun!

You will have an amazing trip, and it's so fun to travel with grown-up kid!

Thank you all. We will be saving up for the trip in the next four years. Would a split stay at a Value and Contemporary be more cost effective than doing a full stay at Fort Wilderness cabins?
