for a teen? I have a hard time matching the drug store colors for myself - but I can't afford the $32 stuff from Sephora for her either.

Can you recommend something else affordable - or at least a way to find the perfect match of the more affordable drug store makeup?

And one more thing - what does your teen wear? Do they wear it all? I only know 2 of her friends who wear makeup - 1 her age & 1 older & they both do interesting makeup on their eyes. The others I haven't noticed anything much.

You could go to the websites of make up you are interested in and ask for samples. Alot of them also have customer service lines and are more than happy to help.

I am very fair and once got some makeup from Almay that made me look like I had a mask on. I called them and they sent me gift certificates to go back and get a different type of their makeup.

Also, if you have ulta in your area they have a no hassle return policy. You can bring anything back within 30 days. They carry all the national brands, maybeline, revelon, cover girl. They take manufacturers coupons also. If they are not in your area they also do online sales. :)

I have never been able to properly match foundation to my skin tone at a drug store.

Have you considered Bare Escentuals (sp?)? I have had an easier time matching skin tone--I'm a very light tone and a little goes a long way and lasts for a long time. I get a year out of a container at least. Wish they had it growing up.

It wasn't until I was an adult and went to a makeup counter that let you TRY the colors to find a good match.

Bare Escentuals is a good one, or any general powder foundation is a great choice for teens because it's harder to cake on and blends more easily.

Rite-Aid has a great return policy- you can return opened makeup with a receipt if you're not happy.

A lot of the drug store type manufactures have skin matching cards out now where you put the card against your skin and when the square disappears, that is the right tone for you. I have had pretty good luck with that lately. I have only ever once found a foundation that was a perfect match for my skin-and they discontinued it.

I have been using a Neutrogena mineral power lately and I really like that. I think it is easier to get a good match with the powder vs a liquid.

DD16 uses eyeliner and mascara (lightly--no raccoon eyes) most days. In the winter she uses the same kind of mineral powder foundation I use. In the summer she doesn't use it at all. She has a nice complexion and nice, even skin tones so she really doesn't need make up at all--she also has thick, thick dark eyelashes.

My daughter (who is now almost 20), wore Bare Escentuals mostly through her teens. It is a bit pricey compared to drugstore brands but it lasts a LONG time. Right now she seems to like MAC makeup and it does look nice on her skin but CHA-CHING--expensive.

I would suggest that you go to Target and try the Sonia Kuschiak line. It is more expensive than Cover Girl, Loreal, etc., but cheaper than what you'd find in Sephora. Sonia has a "mineral" line out now and I really like some of the stuff I've tried. Mineral makeup is VERY forgiving when it comes to matching colors so you might have good luck. You will have to invest in the brushes but after that you're good. The Sonia Kuschiak line routinely gets high marks in most magazines. Right now I am using the new mineral blush because I liked the colors over what Bare Escentuals offered. The concealer palette is my favorite. There are lots of types of liquid foundation too, which I don't use, but I like the colors I see. They look more natural than some of the other brands which always strike me as too yellow or too pink.

Almay has a foundation called Smart Shade or something similar that will match your shade perfectly. My niece has been using this for a while and loves it.

My 14 year old uses Maybelline Fit Me foundation when she does wear foundation she doesn't wear it everyday.

She does her eyes everyday and she does use the expensive make-up on her eyes. And I can't tell you a specific brand because she pefers certain brands for different products. Her make up is very natural for school, but the brands she buys last all day. She is a make-up junkie.

YouTube is great for tutorials on how to do different looks

another supporter of Bare Minerals - and at Ulta and Sephora carry it and you can try it on - but we get it at QVC a bit cheaper when they have specials...

and you do use less -

now for me, the shocker was that eye makeup - I hate it! it looks very raccoon - y - - but I have picked her up from school and I do notice that other girls also wear the black mascara and the black eye pencil - so I figure if it makes her happy - go for it!!

I buy the cheaper eye pencil tho - and the drugstore mascara - had a hard time finding something to take it all off -

Philosphy's Purity is AMAZING, it literally take it off, like melts it off, no scrubbing!! LOVE it - again, the initial outlay is expnesive - but QVC again has specials and the larger size, better price!

I definitely do a Bare Essentials or Bare Minerals type makeup.

You can get a basic kit from Sephora for $30ish bucks but it should last a long time. It comes with brushes and several powders. Mine lasted nearly a year I believe. It's very light which would be nice for a teen also and has a directional DVD if this is her first time starting with makeup.

I was more comfortable with taking my young teen to a makeup counter and having the colors selected for her by a professional and having her taught how to use it. Less of a chance of disasterous results.

I also do not find MAC to be terribly expensive. Sure it's more expensive than a lot of drugstore brands but I don't buy that for myself either.

Try Everyday Minerals. Its only available online. You can get sample of shades to try before buying a whole container.

DD16 wears this. She usually only wears foundation, a little neutral eye shadow, and mascara.

I wear covergirl tru-blend foundation. My two sisters use Bare Minerals and Covergirl Clean make-up. The one who uses Bare Minerals absolutely loves it, and won't even consider switching back to liquid foundation.

At 19, I wear concealer, foundation, mascara, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, and lip gloss just about daily. When I was younger, though, I typically just wore mascara and lip gloss, and sometimes put on an eye shadow.
My 16 year old sister wears foundation, mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow when she does wear make-up.
We both also wear face powder if we have foundation on, to keep our skin from getting oily.
My 18 year old sister wears mascara, eyeshadow and eye liner every day.

It really depends on your daughter, and what she likes to wear. some teens find it a pain to put on eye shadow and eye liner before school, especially if time is an issue in the mornings. When I was still in high school, I only really wore eye shadow and eye liner on the weekends, because I didn't have time for it during the week.

If you are a Costco member, they carry a line of mineral makeup (very comparable to BE) called Kirkland Signature by Borghese. I live in NY and my local store currently has a small kit that consists of blush, foundation powder, lipgloss, and a kabuki brush for less than $20.

Good luck :goodvibes

Clinique is really reasonably priced for department store makeup. And they will match the right colors for you at the counter which is really helpful. If you can get it during Clinique Bonus time, with a $25 purchase you get a bonus make up bag with several small products like mascara, eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick. That's a great way to get her the make up bag and several products at once.

MAC is actually not too expensive either, cheaper than most Sephora stuff, but it is very pigmented and I think it would be easy for a young teen to go overboard.

If she wants to wear eyeliner, see if you can convince her to use dark brown liner (for tanner skin tones) or regular brown liner (for fairer skin tones). It's not as harsh as black but still shows up. And get her a liner than will actually last all day, because it starts to look raccoon-ish when it smears. I really like the Revlon Colorstay twist up liner.

I like BM, the druge stores have some less expensive mineral makeup and if the color isn't right most stores take it back.I have never had a problem with CVS or Rite-Aid.
