I am looking for a good (budget) starter kit for my 12 year old. She is my oldest and my Mom didn't let us wear makeup until we were 18 so I don't have much experience.

What are you going to let her wear? I would say no foundation. Maybe just eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara and some gloss? Take her to walmart/target/drug store and pick up a couple things. There are probably coupons in the sunday paper for a couple dollars off. I would not buy one of those gift set kits that pop up around the holiday season.

Check if your local malls have a Cosmetic Company Outlet. They sell Estee Lauder (Clinique, Bobbi Brown, MAC) products at a discount

Thank you. I have looked at the large sets most of the colors seem really dark or have some really mature names. Most of the girls in 7th grade have been wearing makeup for over a year I am finally giving in.

I wish you were my mom! I would put my make up on in the bathroom and take it off before I went home. I think they finally gave in around 8th or 9th grade.

The large sets aren't very good quality. ELF is probably at about the same level, but at least you could pick out things that you approve.

I would take her to your local Clinique counter. They will help you pick out some shades that match your DD's skin color and show her how to apply the items correctly (this way she will not look like a clown). You decide which items she will use. If finances are big on your decision you do not have to purchase all the items at once. I like getting the items when it is bonus time.

I know you said budget, but I would really want to get my daughter some quality make-up so that she learns how to apply it with a good product. I used to wear Cover Girl and my face looked terrible, lol.

I would really recommend Bare Minerals or some other mineral makeup. They're light so she wont' look cakey and I've found it's been much better on my acne prone skin than the liquids. The starter kit runs about $60 at Sephora w/out a coupon. It also comes w/a dvd that teaches you how to apply.

There's also Sheer Cover. I haven't tried it but it gets good reviews. I've also heard really good things about Every Day Minerals. I just did a quick look and found this. Really reasonably priced and it seems to give you the basics. They also used to have a free trial, you only pay shipping.

Maybe you could make a fun day out of it it. Take her to MAC or Sephora and get her a makeover and then buy a few products? My daughter is only 2 and the other one is still "cooking" and I can't wait to do this stuff with her!

I'd skip foundation as well. At that age, I'd get some drugstore makeup - a flesh/pink soft blush (I'm assuming your daughter is white, if she isn't, my apologies for the assumption and change the tones here appropriately). A four color eyeshadow kit in fairly neutral colors, a lip gloss - again something in a rose/pink sort of youthful neutral hue, and brown covergirl mascara.

I wouldn't get one of those huge makeup kits off the bat - maybe next Christmas when she's learned how to apply neutral colors. Or right after school lets out - when she can heavy hand all summer long learning......

I'd recommend Bare Minerals as well. Even the foundation really just evens out your skintone - it's not real "makeupy." My daughter is now 19, but that's what I started her out on and she still uses it (I actually use it as well), and because they are chemical free teens who already have to worry about acne don't have more worries when wearing Bare Minerals. It is pricey, but it lasts a long time.

My youngest is 10 and when she starts asking to wear makeup, I'll start her on Bare Minerals as well.

I must say that I agree with starting her on Bare Minerals. The over the counter makeup can lead to skin irratations and break outs, the last thing a pre-teen needs. I have very sensitive skin and BM is the only make up I can wear that makes my skin "better". Don't lose sight of the fact that you aren't just starting her on make up, but starting to teach her about a good skin care routine. My dd is 11 and when I do decide to let her begin wearing make up this is what she will be wearing. Make up is meant to enhance your natural beauty and at this young age that is all they are...natural beauties. :lovestruc Start her on something that will take care of that perfect skin she has right now. Plus the added benefits are it is the most fun makeup ever, and never runs out or expires. If you have a local Sephora store take her in and play. Good luck! :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the information. I looked online at bare minerals and that looks like exactly what I was looking for.

My DD is almost 12. She has to wear makeup for cheerleading competition. For foundation I use Bare Minerals, that is what I use.

I am also going to allow her to start wearing makeup, yes she is only 11. However, she is splotchy like me and my whole family. Everyday she screams I hate my red Irish skin, she is a blond so it really stands out. Bare Minerals will cover it up. Also she hates eye makeup, and personally, I would allow her to wear foundation before eye liner, but that is me. Give it a try, I think you will like it and it doesn't look like makeup.

If you go this route, ulta has mineral makeup that is much less expensive and works well. ( i currently use this instead of bare minerals) They usually have great sales on thier make up.

One more plug for mineral make-up in general :). I got my starter kit 3 years ago and it lasted me almost a year. I bought the big jars of the foundation and mineral veil and I still have TONS left, I haven't even gone through half of it. So it is more expensive, but if you apply it correctly (in small amounts as instructed), it will last a long, long time. They also have fun eye and cheek kits for when she gets older and you're more comfortable letting her wear more color. Hope your daughter enjoys it!

I'd let my daughter wear foundation before eyeliner, too. Especially that heavy black stuff. IMHO, "Smokey" eyes are really not appropriate on a young girl. I have no desire to raise Taylor Momsen.

In our house we started with some blush and lip gloss. Added mascara. Eye shadow for fun - but light colors. Haven't gotten to foundation (I use mineral foundation and like it a lot - it isn't cakey looking like a liquid - but my daughters young skin doesn't need foundation - its pretty clear and glows) or eyeliner. She's eleven and doesn't really wear it out of the house yet unless we are going to a "fancy dinner" - middle school is next year. But that's also the behavior I model for her - I wear subtle makeup to work, don't wear makeup at all on weekends, and only wear noticeable makeup for occasions.

I like the Bare Minerals stuff, but I didn't like the starter kit. Yeah, its a "savings" off buying it off the shelf, but you might want a different set of stuff.

bare minerals while a little more expensive is GREAT but the kids have to be responsable my sil used it for a while but her teenage daughter stared to borrow it ... and dumped half of her make up out (and this girl is 15) so you have to be careful in that reguard with bareminerals... other wise sephora has a huge pallet you can buy not the best but not a bad place to start for around 30$. I do all my makeup shopping at sephora they have pretty decent stuff if you just go in a sephora and ask them about it they could show you all the different little kits they have i got my neice one of the eyeshadow ones for 20$ a few years back... it is all she wears and it's almost gone will have to get her another for her next birthday!

Hey, I suggested Clinique but now everyone on here has me wanting to look into Bare Minerals. Tell me somethings about BM. Do they have a counter where you can go and pick out some items that match skin color? Etc...

I would suggest bare escentuals also (bare minerals). Right now they are offering 20% off (thru the 12th of Dec.) and free shipping over $50 on their website www.bareescentuals.com
They have some great kits put together. I just ordered the "Beyond Gorgeous" kit that's on the homepage
for myself :rolleyes1, but have ordered from QVC - they offer some great values on kits- as well for myself and my DD's.
My DD17 is receiving this for Christmas:

The makeup looks so natural and really you can't mess it up. The product lasts a good long time also.
