Makes you nervous doesnt it?!!

Ive just booked flights with VA. I never really knew that you'd be covered if you paid by credit card, the reason i paid by debit card is because with all the flights i was booking they wanted nearly an extra £80 to pay by credit card. Hind sight is a wonderful thing.:goodvibes

My accomodation is through our DVC points and we buy our AP's out there so im not worried about that side of it.

The things that ive been thinking about is that ive booked a cruise with dreams unlimited. If there was a problem with it and we had to cancel or something - will my travel insurance cover me for that? As its not a trip originating in the UK?:confused3

SNAP!! I have been panicking about next years cruise all weekend as I have booked through DU but I don't really know much about them. I was planning on paying for the trip through DU in the next few weeks (even though payment is not due until March) but now am thinking its best to hang onto my money until the last minute just incase something happened to them.

What you have to remember is that companies charge an extra % to cover there costs when taking CC payments. You are covered under the CCA 1979 on any purchase made using your CC for any amounts over £100gbp and upto I think £30,000gbp. But what a lot of people do not realise and the banks will not tell you is,,,, if you part pay for some thing via your CC as long as you pay over £100.00gbp and pay the rest cash/debit your CC company become liable under the CCA for he total cost of the product purchased. So If your holiday costs £3000.00 and you pay the deposit of £600.00 via Debit card (solo, Electron) this would leave a balance of £2400.00. What I do is pay the remaining £2250.00 Via cheque/Debit card. And I put the remaining £150.00 on my credit card. This serves two purposes 1. I am covered under the CCA 1979 for the full cost of the product and 2. I only pay 2% of £150.00 to the merchant.

As i understand it DU are a travel agent that take bookings on behalf of Disney - certainly if you make a payment the money is taken by DCL not dreams unlimited. Like you our balance isnt due until early next year (mid feb) but i paid in full a few weeks ago. Ive used them several times before and think they are great. :goodvibes

I knew about the protection over £100,but to be honest like i said i just didnt think. I never realised that i could split it though, so i just pay the £100 on credit card and the rest on debit. Although i booked online so it didnt give me the option. However if i had known that i would have booked it on the phone.:goodvibes

I expect it would depend on the travel insurance - as with everything, there are good policies and not so good. But I've never seen anything about it only being valid for holidays originating in the UK. Anyway, however you have put your holiday together, if you live in the UK then it starts in the UK. And it is travel insurance, not 'package holiday insurance'. What you've heard might be confusion with the cover for delayed flights, which generally only covers the flight directly to or from the UK.

For example, we once flew Manchester-Chicago-Denver. We were delayed in Chicago for 3 days because of weather in Denver, and had to find and pay for accommodation for that time. If we had been delayed in Manchester for more than 12 hours we could have cancelled the whole holiday and the travel insurance would have paid for everything we'd lost - flights, car, hotel. But because the delay was in Chicago, we could claim nothing.

Since then I've tried to find travel insurance which would cover us in these circumstances, as we often don't fly direct, but to no avail. Now if our flight out is time critical, for instance if we're going on a cruise, then we only book direct flights.
