Makes me crazy!!

I have problems that I need a doctor for and dont have health ins and cant afford it on one income. I cant work due to my problems , so I cant even file for any ssi. It upsets me that people who use the system and can work, just wont find a job. I need the extra income.

I agree. I am amazed at how many people defend the abuse of the welfare system! First of all let's put aside the people who are on temporary assistance and are using welfare as a safety net. Welfare can be a good program. However MANY (millions) of people are using Welfare as a hammock! They are living off the goverment (government = taxpayers). The government doesn't actually generate their own money, government money is taxpayer money. Nothing is for free.

The way things are going in this country where people are "entitled" to food, shelter, medical care, housing, cell phones, extra cash assistance etc. is ridiculous. Look at our constitution, we are entitled to the PURSUIT of happines.

Soon (if Obama stays in office) there will be the majority of American's getting government checks....and there are not enough people working to pay for all those checks. Then all of a sudden China won't lend us money to pay for these entitlements. Then, the ball drops and we are Greece rioting in the streets. OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!

Might I suggest a refresher in American politics? Nowhere in the Constitution does the phrase "pursuit of happiness" appear.
 
I agree that too many people abuse the system, but I also don't want to see children hungry because their parents are too lazy to work. I would like to see more invested in education of people including afterschool programs to work people out of the cycle of living off of government than continuing to put more and more money into government welfare programs that clearly are not working.
 

That's just not true. Employment demands a level of reliability that many of the disabled can't provide - on good days they may look able-bodied enough to hold a job, but you're not seeing the bad days where even sitting in a casino would be too much.

With the "efficiency" at which our gov't operates, it's probably $40-50 in "tax dollars" to feed one person at McDonalds

Amen, as someone who works for a government agency, I see first hand that it probably costs $30 or $40 in administrative costs, salaries and unbelievable bureaucracy expenses to give $1 to a family!

It's easy to be generous with someone else's money! Go ahead and keep voting for politicians who keep give away tax dollars to people who don't want to work so when it's time for you to collect social security three will be nothing left.
 
my husband and I give over 10% of our income to charity and I know there are people out there who need help, but there is something not right with healthy young people being able to freeload while we work two jobs to support our families.

You really have no idea, if that person is on welfare, ssi, unemployment, disability or what. It was McDonalds, for crying out loud, not a steak house. And if it's disability or unemployment, should they just sit home and not use any money for pleasure? Are casino's illegal, or should they have spent the entire day sitting in their home? You have no idea if they planned on going there to apply to work, or spending $10 on the slots. How do you know you even heard the entire conversation?

I am not on the system of any sorts. I pay for my cruises and it is about every 3 yrs. I have only been on 3.

And if you would like to know I paid 400 for two people for four days. I dont get to vacation alot.
 
I just have to say, I never knew you could use an access card at Mcdonalds. Thought they were for groceries. Interesting things you can learn on a WDW forum. LOL

Why do you feel the need to bash me? I am not on the system, What I am not allowed to save for a vacation? I am not putting out thousands of dollars for a vacation. Mostly we travel very close to home. You have upset me deeply. I made a comment about people who are taking advantage of the situation. I would rather work, than being able not to. But I am not collecting anything from anywhere. So why ask me about my travel?

In some states, they allow food stamps to be used at certain places like fast food establishments for a few reasons. Primarily, a lot of people living very close to the edge don't have traditional housing - they may live in hotels or with other people part of the time or in shelters part of the time or etc. Hence, buying, storing and cooking groceries can be very tough.

If you're living in a long-term occupancy motel with a couple of kids and you work odd hours and all there is is like a tiny fridge or and maybe a small hot plate, it's not practical to feed everyone like, beans and rice. In situations like that it may make more financial sense to find a pizza deal or get McDonald's for dinner. Kids usually eat breakfast and lunch at school so that's taken care of.

It was that sort of thing, people living in very transitional housing, that prompted the rethink of what could be purchased.

It depends on the state. Some have programs allowing the disabled, elderly, and homeless to use the card for certain prepared foods because they lack the ability or facilities for cooking. Others use the same cards to distribute cash benefits like AFDC (or whatever it is called now), disability, workman's comp, unemployment, and even child support.

I was at Sam's Club yesterday and the two ladies ahead of me had a cart with 3 huge beautifully decorated cakes and a rotisserie chicken. The woman used her Bridge Card ( Michigan) to purchase her cakes and was told by the cashier that she couldn't buy the chicken because it was hot food.
So in Michigan, you can spend our tax dollars on decorated cakes, but not a cooked chicken.
Hmmm.... yes , I believe we should have a voice in how our money is spent.
I am in big believer in lending a hand, but I'm not interested in funding a catered lifestyle.
 
Wow. I get my child support on a debit card and *gasp* sometimes I use that card at a store to buy something for ME because I've already paid for something for DD out of my checking account and it's easier than transferring the money around.

Good to know there might be someone in line behind me going on the internet posting about how some lady is using her child support money to buy lunch.

You cannot possibly know someone's entire situation because you saw them in line at McDonalds. I'm as upset as anyone about abuses of the situation but you cannot judge someone by hearing them talk for five minutes. You don't know what's going on in their lives.
 
So sad...I say let them have their McDonalds. Maybe thats the only fun they get.

I did not realize that the President has the power to personally issue "government checks" to the majority of Americans.
