what is your suggestion? big or small ideas welcome.

no bailout, that's what I say.

Let natural consequences occur so that the economy will not be propped up on toothpicks. The resourceful will be fine, Americans will be drawn into community, family, friends and neighbors. We will need each other and people will have to share and be nice. In general people will be happier.

No bailout.

Give more power back to the states.

Put all of congress up for re-election immediately - and then clean house!

Fill the Judicial branch with strict constitutionalists who actually want to uphold the law instead of create it.

Cut spending to the bone - a complete ban on all pork for at least 5 years. I think the country will see that we can survive just fine without it.

Create work visas for a lot of the illegal immigrants who just need to come here to work - all the rest....deport, deport, deport!!!! And then HOLD the borders!!!

I'm sure I can think of more, but I have to take my daughter to Preschool. ;)

Oh, and give congress a 6 month vacation. The less time they're there, the less harm they can cause.

Hmmmm, maybe we should make it 11 months.

Go back to actually following the Constitution would be a very good place to start.

If there is no bail out, our economy will collapse and as will our country no matter who is President.

This is going to affect every American and something needs to be done.

Bailout. Needs to be done or else we'll all be eating hot dogs over a hobo's BBQ.

Tougher credit regulations for credit cards, car loans, and mortgages.

Tax incentives for people who save money instead of spending every bloody red cent they make.

Tax incentives to keep profitable industries in the US.

Can someone define "pork" for me? Seriously, my experience is that what someone in (insert state name here) thinks is pork is not when the new community center gets built with some federal support in (insert city and state name here). Isn't (or can't )pork be a matter of perspective?

Maybe the better way to define "pork" is an earmark -- i.e., a non-competitive granting of federal dollars provided to a specific organization by a specific legislator.

I would like to see a government system in place that is truly looking out for the good of the people. I am sick and tired of partisan politics and, in my opinion, that is the root cause of why things are the way they are. Important decisions are made based on what their particular party wants, not based on what is good for the country. The worse part is that their attitude has transfered over to the average American. Just look at these boards to see that. For some, the world would be a perfect place if only their party could be in charge. Their party is perfect and doesn't make any mistakes. It is always the other side. Politics has brainwashed so many to have an "us against them" attitude. I would like to see people in office that truly have my state and countries best interest at heart and I do not see that from anyone.

Exactly. It's easy to say no bailout, because you just see it as helping out the wealthy Wall Street companies. But the real consequences of not doing anything would be a downfall for everyone. Banks would be going under left and right. Small business are done because they can't get small business loans. No more student loans so the next generation won't be heading off to college and that would put many teachers out of work too. The Wall Street companies affect everything.

Yes, CEO's make too much and they're getting rich while the rest of us are struggling. Something needs to be done there. But these corporations that they run are the backbone of our economy and sitting back doing nothing while cause the downfall of everyone.

Good luck!

is there any type of guarantee that a bailout will work for any amount of time beyond the immediate future? I doubt it. Then what? another bailout?

How about anything extra added to a bill that shouldn't belong. I don't care how much good anyone thinks the pork is......if the state can't afford it - they shouldn't get it. Period. I think a ban on ALL pork for the next 5 years isn't too much to ask. It's just like any household that's in a tight spot - they must draw the line between Need and Want.

Giving Congress a 11 month vacation is a good idea!

Seriously I think a good place to start is term limits. 4 years and out (IMHO) for Congress and 6 and out for President (no reelection possible). If they are not always running maybe they would have the courage to govern.

The problem is, everyone has their own idea of what is considered "good for the country"

Good point! Now I am depressed because I don't have an answer. :sad2:

I see your points and appreciate the way you've expressed them BUT if there is a moderate chance that Mickeyistheman is correct how do you justify your position?

Love this term limit idea as far as not worrying about re election. But experience is good too.

I'd like to see some oversight with what goes on relative to the actual day to day spending of our tax dollars. I'm sure some of you have said - "Oh, that's right - Bob has a "Government" job". The connotation being that he has it easy - gets paid well, has great benefits and has a very easy job! There was a new program with a show not too long ago - about how many government employees don't even BOTHER to show up for work - yet, they still get paid and have benefits! How can this be? At my company if you clock in late (even 1 min) three times in a year - you can be written up!

The wastefullness (not a word?) of how the Government uses the money they already collect from us is Deplorable! Grants are given to see if a cow's fart affects air quality... necessary? But we have citizens who can't get medications - or get to the Doctor in the first place!

As a country - we send billions overseas in foreign aid - I feel for those folks, I really do - but how can so much be given away when American citizens - (who made the funds available) don't have what they need, when there are American children who go to bed hungry?

Things just seem to be in a downward spiral - and I don't see that it can get better.

I don't have an answer - I WISH I did! Frankly - it makes my head hurt to think about it! :headache:

I believe that borrowing money to fix a bad economy is insane....it doesn't make sense at all.

It's what we are used to ....debt. And the fact that all of this debt and a bad or sagging or collapsed economy can be fixed by adding more debt is fundamentally stupid.

If not borrowing money will lead to economic collapse, well, maybe that is what should happen.....no one is saying it will be fun or easy.

If borrowing money is such a terrific idea how about tossing some cash into state budgets to create jobs and let the money trickle up for a change?

Well that just won't fly, will it?

::yes::

Let the free market reign! No bailout. It will be ugly, but we'll be better off in the long run if the market is allowed to self-correct.

No Bailout! JMO.
