Make A Wish Foundation question

My sister just inquired about Make A Wish for her daughter. Her doctors and specialists have already told her that her daughter will qualify, without a doubt. She is concerned though, because her daughter cannot talk. She is severely delayed (mentally and physically) and has problems with her vocal cords. She really wants to take her to Disney, because she will park her wheelchair in front of the TV for hours watching Disney movies. It is what she has most interest in. Will they grant her a wish without her being able to convey a wish to them herself?

My guess is that they will once they see that she is non verbal , I am sure that this is probably not the first time they see this.
Best of luck to them !

A lot depends on how your local chapter works. It is up to them, and not the National organization, to do the granting.

How old is she? Can she draw a picture of her wish?

The Make a Wish coordinator should be able to ask you the right questions to figure this out. Perhaps she would like to meet some of the characters from the Disney movies.

We are all excited to hear about the plans. Please visit the thread link in my signature for The Home Page for Wish Trippers to network with people who have been there or are planning on being there.

It is up to your local group. My son went last December. He is profound MR and nonverbal. We explained to the wish coordinators why we thought he would enjoy WDW and had no problems. Good luck. Karen

You might order the Trip Planning DVD from Disney's website. It shows an overview of each park with scenes from the rides and attractions. It is very well done. She could watch that and her response might tell a lot about her wishes.

The travel channel also sometimes airs tours of WDW and Sea World.

Perhaps a local library has a video tour of Disneyland. There have been several made over the years for souvenirs.

She is 3. She doesn't have good use of her hands because she has CP. And she is delayed, so she wouldn't be able to draw a pictures. She may be able to answer some of their questions, but it would be one word answers. And sometimes you can't understand what she says because she has a lot of vocal cord damage.

Kadesha,

Then I think the idea of letting her see WDW video and watching her response could be very helpful. You can find a LOT of WDW ride video footage on YouTube, and still shots on wdwinfo.com.

Blessings,

Bill

Could she choose between her favorite pictures? Maybe make large (8 x 11) size pictures of WDW scenes (with her fav characters) and another scene- maybe trees, or a park with swings, or even ice cream. See which one she looks at longest or moves her arms towards or says she "wants"......if there is a tendency towards looking/moving/liking the WDW pics you have got it made....and I would show her the planning video several times to acquaint her with those images. I have a feeling her eyes will give her desires away to the Wish team!

Val--That is a FANTASTIC idea!! I didn't even think of printing out pictures for her!!! Thank you so much!
