DH and I will be going to Aulani for the first time in less than two weeks. :) I've read a lot about Ama Ama, but not as much about Makahiki. As of now we have reservations for dinner at 6:30 (after the character show has ended). Is the food decent? Can we request to sit outside? Will we be able to see the sunset from the restaurant? I would love to hear experiences from people who dined here without the characters.

Thank you!

We did Makahiki as two adults - review in my Trip Report in my signature.

We also ate at 6:30, which was the first seating after the character dinner was over. The place really emptied out and I think the restaurant was half empty, so it was a much more calm and quieter atmosphere. We were sat outside and likely would have been able to request that, there were several tables available outside. Makahiki is at the very back of the resort from the beach, so any sunset views would be obstructed. You definitely can't see the beach or water from there. We thought the food was great and loved the selections.

Thank you for the info. I went ahead and changed my reservation to 7:00 so DH and I can watch the sunset before dinner.

It sounds like you had the perfect honeymoon! Congratulations to you! :)

Just had dinner there about a week ago. As we shared in another thread, we really enjoyed the food - it seemed much better than the last time we ate dinner there a couple years ago. Our group loved the prime rib, large shrimp, salmon sashimi (not alot of sushi variety, though), refillable pineapple and passion guava juices. Also liked the corn cob, rice crispy treats, and did I mention prime rib?

Have a great trip!

We have gone to Aulani every year since 2012 (it's our DVC home resort). We finally went to Makahiki for the first time. The food was fine, but typical buffet in my opinion. I'm glad we did it so we can finally say we did. But next time for the same money, I think we'll go to Roy's.

My husband and I ate there a few months ago. It was nice, but keep in mind--there's only SO much you can do with a buffet. Even Disney.
It had an island flair, nothing awful about it at all.
We wanted to check it out so we did. We probably won't do it again.
So, unless you are really (really) into Disney buffets, skip it and go across the street to Monkey Pod!

My husband and I ate there on our trip in Sept. 2015 for dinner.
I thought the food was very good and we had a beautiful babe outside.

Enjoy

A beautiful babe sounds better than a beautiful table.

We ate at Makahiki twice on our honeymoon in November! Just the two of us, me and DH, and we loved it! We did the character breakfast and enjoyed the restaurant and food so much, we ended up going back a few nights later for dinner (non-character) and we loved it again! :) But of course, it's up to your tastes and what you enjoy. DH and I love eating, and although everyone on here recommended Monkeypod, and we ended up eating there twice (for variety) on our trip, we didn't care for that restaurant as much as Ama Ama, and I think it was just as expensive for what we ended up ordering. So, I guess I'm saying to each his own! lol

We ate at Makahiki for dinner and breakfast end of January and liked very much. We thought the quality of the food was very good for a buffet. Prime Rib melted in your mouth I remember.

We went to Monkeypod once by Aulani and once in Maui and didn't enjoy either dinner. Would go back to Makahiki in a heartbeat.
