MIAMI, March 24 (UPI) -- The huge fuel tank fire at Miami International Airport appears to be under control, fire officials said Thursday.
No injuries were reported from the blaze that broke out Wednesday night in a fuel tank area close to terminals and runways, WFOR-TV, Miami, reported.
Firefighters allowed fuel tanks already on fire to burn out while protecting other tanks, The Miami Herald reported.
As of 1 a.m., only one flight was delayed, an airport spokeswoman said.
Drivers reported seeing billowing smoke as they drove along nearby Florida state road 836.
Firefighters used ladder trucks to throw water onto tanks that needed protection from the fire, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Eric Baum said. Crews also were working with airport personnel to cut off fuel flow to the tanks. Twenty units were on the scene, he said.
Firefighters said they didn't know how many tanks were on fire or what started the fuel blaze.
