A propane tanker truck went over a ramp from 895, landed on cars on northbound 95, and exploded. 95 is now closed in BOTH directions (just south of the Baltimore beltway), and possibly won't be open until at least tomorrow morning. If you're going 95, be sure to listen to traffic reports as you get near Maryland!

***UPDATE: 95 is now open both directions. No word yet on what caused the tanker to go off the overpass. 5 people died (in 5 vehicles.)

Some of the news stations are reporting depending on the damage to the surface of the road, it could take a couple of days for the highway to reopen.

Ooops, sorry Barb, looks like we were posting at the same time. Have you been watching the coverage on the local news? I don't know how they can tell how many vehicles were involved. I can guarantee that there will be more than 2 people dead by the end of the investigation. Everything just melted! I pray for those involved. I can't imagine what that must have been like for those that even witnessed it as it happened.

One witness counted a total of 5 vehicles - the tanker, a flatbed truck, one vehicle completely under the flatbed, one partically under the flatbed and another near an embankment. It doesn't look good for those involved. The accident happened just before 3pm and as of 5pm emergency personnel had not attempted to work on any victims. The lifeflight helicopter landed but took off a while later with no passenger. It seems that all the emergency personnel are able to do is fight the fire and contain any hazardous runoff. A sad day for all involved.

Governor Ehrlich is on TV now saying that they hope to have SOUTHBOUND open sometime during the night, but there's no telling about northbound. They have to check the "structural integrity of the highway," and at this point (3.5 hour later) there's still steam coming up. From the TV coverage it looks like the road has been damaged, but it's still pretty covered by hazmat foam.

They're approaching it AS IF it were a crime scene, but are not assuming that a crime was committed.

And yes, mom2boys and LuckyMommyX2, I'm local too. I'm in Ellicott City.
