i want to send the person i secretly admire a valentine's day gift from me as his secret admirer. i want to make chocolate dipped strawberries, bananas, and pineapple. is mailing/shipping them safe? the goal is to make them tomorrow night and give them to the post office friday morning and overnight them. they'd be going from central NY to philadelphia.

For the price you are going to pay to have something like that sent overnight to another state you can just buy one of the pre-made edible arrangements they sell at the florist online. I don't remember if it is Teleflora, or FTD but you can Google edible arrangements and probably see that you can send one already made for less than $50.

If you don't use the proper preservatives that CHocolate dipped fruit can become a food poisoning hazard in a matter of 24 hours.

A lot of how successful you will be depends on the temperature in the area. If it is over 70 degrees, shipping chocolate is not a good idea. You have no control over where the postal service places the package. If it is left in the sun or a warm area, your package will arrive a melted mess.

:rolleyes1 If chocolate dipped fruit showed up at my door in an unmarked box from someone i didn't know, I'd probably call the police. NO WAY would I eat a bite of it. I'd think you were a stalker. Sorry.

ack, i figured something would go wrong :( i should have known.. my minor is microbiology, but i guess i got a little ahead of myself. what should/could i make instead? chocolate lollipops? cookies? i want to make something myself and not just buy it

his best friend is in on it, so he'd know it was from someone safe. should have said that lol

Make him some rice krispy treats or bacon flavored chocolate lollipops, but put your name on it so he doesn't think some random terrorist has him in their sights.

hmm.. so is the fruit the issue or the sweets? i could do rice krispie treats with frosting and valentine's sprinkles or something like that. or the lollipops alone would be good.

Rice krispy treats are very sturdy. You could even cut them with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Fruit just doesn't hold up long out of the fridge. And cut fruit can turn into a sloppy mess in just a few hours.

Chocolate dipped fruit isn't going to become a biohazard. For the love of Pete. What exactly do you think is going to happen to fruit that will give someone food poisoning? It can stay out fine.

I wouldn't dip fresh banana, but you can do strawberries, pineapple, and add in some dried apricots or something.

Should be totally fine. Temper the chocolate first, but even if you don't, it's cool enough out that it shouldn't be an issue.

I mailed those chocolate marshmallows from Disney to my aunt in Texas. It was shipped priority and arrived just fine. Although I should've sealed the Disney box a bit better because the nuts got all over the place. I'm sure Disney also tempers their chocolate too, which holds up better under normal room temperature.

I think the fruit wouldn't hold up well, and right now is not the season for fruit, so it's probably all imported from Mexico or South America. Although I think strawberries would hold up the best since you don't have to cut those up. Once you cut the fruit, you need to refrigerate it, and chocolate doesn't do that well.

I would NEVER eat food that arrived anonymously to my house. ...and if the best friend is in on it, the OP is no secret admirer.

Chocolate dipper fruit wouldn't work, as you've discovered. Rice Krispie treats are a good idea, and there are lots of candy molds at craft stores to use with candy melts. They're not hard to work with at all.

I have to say, though, that by college I think the "secret admirer" thing seems pretty immature. If there is someone you are interested in, put your name on the gift and go from there. Good luck to you!
