Mail your luggage?

We are traveling to the World in June 08 and since we are from California, we are considering mailing our luggage ahead of time. Has anyone done this before? If so, how was your experience with the DVC resorts? We are going to book (hopefully) at OKW. Would appreciate any input you may have.

Why would you want to mail your luggage?

If there are a lot of you, with little kids, use ME and fly on an airline that takes the luggage to your resort!

The Christmas tree swap is proof that you can get packages safely to WDW resorts, but I don't understand why you would want to pay for your luggage to be shipped.

Why would you want to mail your luggage?

My DH hates to fly. He would prefer to travel on JetBlue. There are no nonstops from Southern Calif. area to Orlando on JetBlue. We would have to fly to NY then on to Orlando. We thought it would be easier to just take carry ons and mail our luggage to the resort and not worry about losing our luggage. I'll have a car waiting for us to take us to the resort. We won't have to wait for our luggage. It is a big deal for my DH to go to the WDW, so I'm trying make it as easy as possible. It will be a long traveling day as it is.

I'd be way more worried about my luggage getting lost being mailed to WDW than I'd worry about it getting lost on the plane with me.

We always fly JetBlue and have to change planes in New York, and our luggage has always gotten to Orlando with us. I wouldn't bother mailing it.

I would not bother... Just use DME. Check in your luggage at the airport and it will get to your room after you arrive. No need to spend extra cash on shipping or a car service, if you ask me.

The service works great and like mentioned above, I would worry less with DME loosing things than USPS, UPS, or other shipping service.

That stinks that you would have to do all that work because you don't want to carry your bags to the airport. That sounds like a ALOT of wasted time.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that they won't just take your luggage without taking you. So, if you never check in to take the shuttle from MCO to WDW then your luggage won't either.

I understand why you would consider it. We flew from Phila Jan '06 and they lost our luggage. Turned up about 7 hours later, thank goodness, but I've heard horror stories. We never sent luggage but have UPS'd a box to the resort. I didn't even need to ask for it, they just went in the back room and brought it out. So, I guess the resorts are pretty good about it.

Maybe I don't understand your concerns, but just because it isn't a non-stop flight, it doesn't mean you have to do anytihing different with your luggage. The airline will check your bags thru to your final destination. Plus, make sure you sign up for disney's free "magical express" service. When you get to Orlando, just head straight down and check in for your bus to the resort. Magical express will pick up your luggage and deliver it later that day directly to your room. It's awesome and free.

Even better: IF jet blue is a participating airline, you can check in your luggage AND get your boarding passes right at the resort on the day you leave! No messing around at the airport. They will handle all your luggage leaving you free to relax or spend a couple hours at the park before you depart or whatever. It's awesome! Did I mention this is a great thing?

Alright. I get the idea. I have a better understanding on how to proceed. I guess I'll use the ME and not worry about my luggage. I wanted to ask the question cuz I knew that there would be some great responses. And there were!! My dh and I are new DVC owners and rarely do we fly anywhere. Thanks for your input! we hope to get out to WDW in June 08. I know I'll keep posting questions and getting some good responses.

using ME is very easy and you don't have to worry about picking up your luggage at MCO. You do need to call ahead to set up ME, though. I would see if you can find out when to call, but once it is setup, you should get everything in the mail to use ME about 3 weeks before you leave. If it doesn't get there around then, I suggest calling and making sure you are sent out your tags and all your information.

JetBlue is a participating airline. We've checked our baggage and got our boarding passes at both BWV and OKW, and it's great! Leave the luggage at the hotel, no standing in line to check it at the airport, and we've had no probem with it getting home at the same time we do!

I understand. My niece's suitcase was "lost" for 4 days on our spring trip.
Not good.

Peter Bloomberg (Travel guy for the Today Show) always ships his luggage ahead if he needs more than carry-on.

Very true - at least one member of your party must take the DME bus to the resort or your luggage wont go anywhere.

My suggestion would be to book a nonstop flight from LAX to MCO, even if it is not on JetBlue. This will significantly reduce the chance you or your luggage will get delayed. United, Delta and American all have nonstops. -- Suzanne

Thanks for the info. I'll have start the flight research in January. We are going in June.
