Maiden vs Married name

My daughter and her longtime boyfriend will be sailing with us next year. Thing is we are pretty certain they will be getting married about one month before sailing date. How will this work with her passport and such? Or should she just wait till we get back to change her last name?

Hold off on the name change.

Traveling on an assumed name (thats what its called when you travel under any name other than your legal name) can be done, but can also be a real PITA. Wait.

In all honesty, I don't know if I would bother changing my name at all. Maybe it's easier now; I've been married over 20 years. It was a total pain. I had a very unique name before. After, it wasn't so unique, and I have gotten other people's bills and calls from jail I have spent a significant amount of time convincing people that those are not my bills, even for ones out of our town and state. I have a friend that didn't change her name legally but does go by her married name in social circumstance, not on legal docs though. If she really wants to change it, definitely wait until after the cruise.

We are in a similar situation (both daughter and I are changing names after the wedding). We will just change them when we get back .

She shouldn’t officially change her name on documents (passport, license etc) until after the cruise. She won’t have time to complete it before travel and while you are in the middle of the process you are in limbo. She should book the cruise under the name on her current travel documents.

She can still start going by her new name right after the wedding just don’t mess with the documents.

Depends on how old the passport is. If your passport was issued within a year of a name change, there's no cost.

I changed my name for this reason lol! My pre marriage name was very very common but also commonly misspelled. My married name is very uncommon.

Name changed almost 24 years ago. From a Smith to a Johnson, lol. No problems, but both last names are so common. But my daughter will not change her name before the cruise.

If you're applying for a new passport due to a name change, and the old passport was issued more than 1 year ago, it's the regular cost for a passport renewal. Currently $110.

Yes, passports (US passports) are valid for 10 years for an adult.

No, she won't be changing her name on it period until it is up for renewal. What a load of crap.

Just tell her to remember that if she's going to use her married name socially, but keep her maiden name legally, when the Customs officer asks her name, to give the one on her documents. New love and a new marriage might make it easy to forget to be diligent when talking to customs officers.

That is just awful how much they charge for a name change on a passport. I could see maybe a $10-15.00 charge for reprinting it and such, but the full amount is just pure evil greed from the government.

I cannot speak to the US system but in Canada a name change is a new passport. It's not even a renewal. They treat it like a new application.

This, and she needs to always make sure she's booking travel in the name that's on her documents. When you use two names it can sometimes be easy to accidentally put in the wrong one.

As far as I know, that's true also in the US. She'd be receiving a new passport with her new name. With a new expiration date.
