If my family stays offsite at WDW do we still get the magicbands to get the fastpass in all parks?

Or how does it work if you stay offsite?

Not yet. Only available to onsite guest.

In order for you to use FP+ you will have to make your reservations in the park.

There is no charge to use FASTPASS or FastPass+  both come free with park admission. The older FASTPASS system is available to all park guests. As of January 2014, FastPass+ is available to the following groups:
"Anyone staying at a Disney-owned resort
"Anyone staying at the Walt Disney World Swan or Dolphin hotels (same-day, in-park reservations only at present)
"Anyone (including families staying outside of Walt Disney World) at Disney's Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom theme parks (same-day, in-park reservations only at present)

We plan on an august WDW visit and was thinking staying off site.

Does that mean no fastpass?

It does not mean you can't use FP it means you can not preplan your visit. Right now folks who stay onsite can pick all of the FP times even before they begin their vacation right from the home computer

For those staying offsite you will have to go the park and go to the FP kiosk and plan your day.

They are starting to try out MagicBands for guests staying off-site; probably will be up and running by the time you visit!
