One of my co-workers just joined DVC on a recent trip to WDW. Before they went to WDW, I used the refer a friend form on the members website. When he went on the tour, he told the guide (same as mine) that I refered him.
How long does it take to receive the certificate?
He must have already closed because he just got his bill for the partial dues. I have not heard a word from the guide or DVC. Should I contact her?
I didn't realize that you get that much for the referral. I thought you got a DVC bag or something, but this is muuuuuch better.

What kind of certificate do you recieve?

We live in Ohio and our state laws prohibit DVC from giving us any gifts for making a referal.

At least that is what our guide told us last month when we were visiting WDW. We asked because we have several interested family members and friends.

When you live in NY as I do also. You receive a certificate that you have to choose either $250 off you Dues or towards a Add-on you can donate it to make a wish or you can take it in Disney Dollars.

Mine took well over 6 months after closing to receive then if you read the fine print it says up to $250 so by the time I got it I had less then that left on my dues for the year so I waited a month or so then mailed it back to get the whole 250 off.

The first referral bonus is $200 not $250, I took the Disney dollars for mine, at least it paid for a pass.

North Carolina prohibits us from receiving any kind of bonus also. Thanks NC!! That is soooo fair.

One of my wife's friends joined and gave us as a referral. I don't think it even took 30 days from their closing (or at least not much longer than that) to get our certificate and the rewards. Maybe we were just lucky.

We took our "reward" in Disney dollars. It didn't seem to take that long to receive them--but I didn't pay really close attention. Of course, all the initial paperwork, deeds etc have to be finished by the buyer before you get anything.

I didn't realize that so many states didn't allow these "rewards." I wonder what the rationale is. Seems very unfair. I can't believe New Jersey actually allows these rewards when other states don't. Yeah, NJ!! Thank you!! I know NJ has all sorts of extra rules about DVC--we get a bunch of papers that other states don't when we buy points. Not being a "legal eagle" I don't really know what they are all about.

We've done a number of referals and it usually takes a couple of months after the closing date to receive the certificate. If you are in a hurry to get your reward just call your guide and see if it is registered to you yet. We did this once because we were leaving for WDW within a month and wanted the Disney Dollars for the trip. If the reward is already processed they will send them right away without the certificate. We received our DD in about 3 days after calling.

Has anyone checked if it really is a state restriction or if it's just the DVC saying that? I could see that in states where they have a good membership presence, they might not need to do this.
We got rewards very early on (Sand Dollars and an Ann Irvine print) but haven't received any notification that any kind of referral program is in place now. Not that we could get anything anyway since we've already referred just about everyone we know!

Are there any other Mass. DVCers who have heard about this?

Fellow Massachusetts DVCer here.

The referal award restrictions are set by the different states, not by Disney (except Disney does not offer referal awards to Disney employees). States get kind of wierd about time share type things. Massachusetts does not have that restriction as we have recieved a few awards, the most recent one a few months ago. They really do come in handy.

Could you imagine the uproar if Disney offered the awards to some states but not to others.

I believe that Donald is right because they allow the program in New Jersey and that state has more DVC members than any other state in the US. (Learned that at one of the Memember Meetings)
