Just wondering - if you rent a car, can you still use the Magical Express tags and have your bags sent to your resort?

NO, you cannot. Magical Express is a Guest transportation service, with luggage delivery being merely an added perk.

No you cannot because if you don't turn in your slip when you get on the bus they will assume you changed your mind or made other arrangements or may not even had been on the flight and they won't associate you with your luggage. If your renting a car I wouldn't chance it and just wait for your luggage.

Thanks. Just checking - since you can check your bags at the resort I was wondering if you can do it in reverse.

Thanks!

Used ME the last 5 trips loved it each time.

Yeh, logic would dictate that it would work the same in each direction, but logic isn't at work here.

The reason is that Resort Airline Check-in, the homeward-bound luggage check-in service, is actually a separate and distinct entity from DME. That's why there can be and are different rules/procedures for each direction.

This is our first time using ME. We will not be cheking luggage as we always bring one carry on each. Do you know if this is ok to bring with us on the bus? Also, we have not received any information and we are leaving in less than two weeks, yikes! Should I be receiving something in the mail that I will need to show before getting on the bus? Thank you for any information!

Wow, just carry on, I am jealous!!! Yes, you can bring carry on (or even checked luggage you pick up if you should have it) on the bus. Carry on can go on the bus with you or depending on the size, they do put luggage under the bus.

You should have recieved an ME envelope already unless you just recently booked. I would call and make sure you have ME on your ressie. They will overnight you new stuff or at least make sure you are in the computer (since you don't need the tags). If you show up and did not have a reservation, they will not transport you.

Enjoy

Definitely call because in the package they send you is your pass to get on the bus and your luggage tags. Even though you have carryons you will need to put the tag on them because they go under the bus.

You don't need to put the yellow tags on your carryons. They're meant only to direct the luggage handlers to the correct resort. If you're not using the luggage service, all you have to do is take the bags with you to the bus and tell the driver where you're getting off. As an aside, if you plan to pick up your own checked luggage, you should NOT use the yellow tags at all.

If you have a reservation in the system and are not using the luggage service, you can get by without having the mailed paperwork at all. The ME check in desk will print a bus voucher for you.

Have you done this since the new travel restrictions? There is A LOT you can't bring with you on the plane now a days. Sunscreen, any liquids. I don't even think you can bring shampoo over 3 oz. It can get pretty complicated. You might want to consider checking your luggage, especially since you have DME and it won't be that much harder to do.

How long ago did you sign up for DME? We called about it last week (but had the DVC ressies a long time ago.) We got the tags less then a week after calling.

I'm doing it in a week. For a 3 day stay I don't need more than 3 oz of shampoo and am taking a chance on not needing lots of sunscreen in December, except for face makeup which contains sunscreen. I won't be using DME for this trip and I'd rather not wait to pick up my one bag.

You can buy shampoo and sunscreen at WDW if you're willing to pay for it, and use it up or throw it out before your return flight. Since I'll have a car, I could even buy it offsite. (Best thing about having a car would be stopping at the Hess market to see if they have bottles of Diet Coke for a buck...that's like a two for one deal over the parks).

When I go to Vegas next month I'm not going to worry about it at all because they have decent toiletries in the rooms. I wish WDW did.

Incorrect.

Number one, even if you receive NOTHING in the mail from DME, as long as you have a reservation you will get the free bus ride AND the automatic luggage delivery. Again, as long as you have a reservation. They will take care of everything when you check in at the DME Welcome Center at MCO.

Number two, carry-on bags NEVER get DME tags on them. Carry-on bags also don't NEED to go under your bus. They only NEED to if they're too large to fit under your own seat or on the overhead shelf. Also, you can CHOOSE to have a smaller carry-on loaded under the bus, if you like.

DME tags exist so that luggage unloaded from the airplanes gets pulled out of the luggage stream before the rest of the luggage reaches the baggage claim carousels. Those tagged bags are then sorted by resort area, packed into locked cages, loaded onto trucks, and then delivered to the resorts. Once at the resorts, Bell Services delivers the bags to the inside of the resort rooms, whether the guests are in their rooms or not. The DME tags have barcodes. These barcodes are scanned 5 times during the above-mentioned process.

Carry-ons that you bring to your bus and get loaded under the bus don't need tags. As soon as your bus arrives at your resort, the driver will unload your carry-ons for you, and you get them right back. Thus, no need for DME tags on them.

The only "new" restrictions are for liquids in containers larger than 3 ounces -- nothing else has changed. To me, that's not too complicated. Think "3-1-1" ... 3 ounces, 1 quart-sized zip-top bag, 1 bag per person.

No matter where I fly, I always have a well-stocked carry-on just in case the AIRLINE delays my luggage.

As long as that works for you. It could never for me, not with 2 kids and all the stuff I need. (extra meds incase the kids get sick, shampoo x 4 people, sunscreen, 3 oz isn't enough to cover my DH whole body. ;) ) I thought they were even giving problems with chap stick and such (under 3 oz.) I just wouldn't want to take the risk, but that is me. My brother travels to NYC every Friday (he teaches a class a Columbia, but is living in Detroit for now.) I am sure he knows more about it then me.

Have you flown recently with a well stocked carry on? I am a little concerned about what they won't allow so we are taking minimal stuff. As it is, that should be easier anyway, not as much to juggle. I just don't want issues or problems at the inspections.

I will miss our soft cooler we normally took with us with drinks and snacks for the kids though. :guilty:

What is the quart sized zip top bag part?

You see the photo in my signature below? The 4 of us flew to WDW 3 weeks ago.

Again, the only "new" restrictions are on liquids and gels. There are NO OTHER NEW RESTRICTIONS from the last time you flew, unless you haven't flown since after 9/11/01.

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm really not, but I just can't imagine anyone with travel on their mind hasn't heard of the "3-1-1/quart-sized zip-top bag" rule instituted a couple of months ago.

Each ticketed passenger is permitted to have in their own carry-on a quart-sized zip-top bag (like a Ziplok or Glad). That bag can be packed with as many containers of liquids/gels than you can fit and still "zip" the bag closed, as long as EACH CONTAINER is no larger than 3 ounces of capacity. So, for example, if you could fit 8 3-ounce containers in that bag and still "zip" the top closed, then everything is kosher. EACH ticketed passenger is permitted to bring one such bag.

When you get to the security checkpoint, they will ask you to remove the bag from your carry-on, so that bag can be examined, and then you will get it back and then put your carry-on bag through the x-ray machine and yourself through the metal detector, etc.

Please check out the TSA's website (www.tsa.gov) to understand this better, or do a search here on the DIS, as the subject has been exhaustively discussed.

There is a lot of misinformation about carry-ons these days. I've seen some people post that they thought NO carry-ons were allowed, and others post that they thought no electronics are allowed on-board, etc. Like I said, the only new restrictions have to do with liquids and gels and NOTHING else. Don't let anyone tell you there are any other "new" restrictions, as it's just not true. However, you DO have to be aware of what contains liquids and gels. For example, souvenir snow globes contain liquid, and thus CAN'T be placed in carry-on bags; snow globes must be placed in checked luggage, or shipped home.

And liquids and gels are fine as long as they are in containers no larger than 3 ounces, and that those containers are inside a quart-sized zip-top bag, no more than one bag per passenger.

That's the "3-1-1" rule -- 3 ounces per container, 1 quart-sized zip-top bag (with as many 3 ounce or smaller container s as you can fit in it with the top zipped), 1 such bag per passenger.

Once you go through airport security, you CAN buy larger liquids to take on the plane with you. For example, if you show up at security with a 1-liter bottle of water, it will be confiscated. But after you pass security, you can buy a 1-liter bottle of water and take it on the plane with you.

I think you're reading CleveRocks' post wrong.
He doesn't pack everything in his carry-on. He packs:
Valuables
Travel documents
Items (swimsuit, change of clothes, toiletries, etc) that he will need for the first 24 hours at his destination; everything else - the full-size shampoo bottle, the sunscreen, eight pairs of shoes, yada, yada, yada - goes in his checked luggage and gets transported legally in the cargo hold of the plane.

Thanks for the description. Last time we flew was May 2006. I was just planning on not bringing any liquids, and I hadn't heard of the quart bag thing. However we always pack in zip locks anyway. I was wondering what to do about sun screen though since we are taking DME and won't have our luggage for a while. I was thinking of getting one or 2 of those sunscreen wipes they have now. DH just thinks hopefully Jan sun won't be too bad, but then again we are pasty white Michiganders.

brisus was talking about taking no checked luggage and I can't imagine doing that with a family for more then over night now a days.

Brisus doesn't mention having children. Not everyone who flies to WDW does.

On my next three flights I will be taking no checked luggage, but there are no children involved and the trips are short.
