Our family just booked our trip for this week about a week ago through Southwest. The information I received from Southwest said that if we don't receive our ME luggage tags we should claim our luggage before going on the Magical Express. When I looked at Disney's website they said that if the tags have not arrived there is no need to get the luggage, that they would just need the claim tickets for the luggage and a description. Has anyone done this without having the luggage tags?

Welcome to the DIS boards!!!!
As far as the luggage tags go...no, you probably won't get them in time at this point. You may be surprised but I doubt it. So.....I always have some really unique ribbon tied to my bags. Then, I take a photo of our bags, so I can show them to a CM if needed.
You can either go to baggage claim and get your bags and then take them with you to the resort, on the same bus. Or, you can give the CM at the DME welcome checkin desk your luggage claim slips, with a description (this is where the unique ribbon/photo comes in handy) of the luggage. They will pull the bags off the baggage carousel and have the bags sent on to the resort. I can't say how well it works because I have never had to do it that way. I would almost rather get them myself, and then have them stowed under the bus. But, that's just me. I don't think I've heard of anyone having any issues with doing it this way though.

Since you dont have enough to get your tags in the mail I would not chance it. Just get your luggage from baggage claim and play it safe.

The system to have DME automatically deliver your bags without DME tags has been a standard procedure since Day One. In know, because I used DME on Day Four, and back then there were HUGE problems with getting DME tags out in time.

The explained the procedure that exists to this day. You skip baggage claim, and check in at the DME Welcome Center like normal. Part of the CM's "script" is to ask if you've DME-tagged your checked bags. When you say "No," they'll ask for your baggage claim ticket numbers, as well as a physical description of the bags (as matched to a photo array).

I received my tags about 14 hours before I left for my trip, so I was prepared to do without. A DME CM at the time suggested we tie some very identifiable ribbon to each piece of checked luggage, and then bring a swatch of that ribbon to the DME Welcome Center with us, to better aid in matching the bags.

Like goofy4tink said, we haven't read about any wholesale problems of people using this Plan B.

Same thing here. Used ME about a month after it started and never got luggage tags. Gave CM the claim tickets and a description of bags and had NO problems.

if i were u i would get mybags BEFORE i leave 4 dme the reason is because i know that we had friend even woth the tags that never got there bags

Luggage that never appears is likely the fault of the airline: Airlines misdirect over three million pieces of luggage a year, and outright lose over 250,000 of those.

If that's the case, picking up one's own luggage is futile. If it never makes it to the luggage carousel, there's nothing to pick up, is there?
